Honda Foreman 500 EFI Fuel pump replacement

  • This is the fuel pump replacement on a 2017 Honda Foreman 500 Rubicon. This is the same process you would use on the newer body style Ranchers and the newer 520 Foreman as well. I purchased the complete pump from Honda and just dropped it in. This actually didn't fix this bikes stalling issue (I put the old pump back in) but I did eventually figure it out and watch until the end to find out what the problem was. I would have never guessed it.

    Thank you for showing all your work - and then admitting it was the spark plug! I'll change that first and see what happens. If the cause of this repeated engine quitting is only the spark plug, it is quite surprising to me as well because any shade tree mechanic would think it's caused by last year's (Stabil-ized) gas or a plugged fuel filter. The engine readily starts up again and idles just fine every time after it quits under a minor load. If the problem on my machine is only the spark plug, I can quickly get back to snowplowing with minimal expense and trouble. Very glad that I came in for lunch and some online research before doing more than removing the seat!
    You're the example of an ethical mechanic who could very easily charge a guy for an engine overhaul, but instead, tells the customer all he needs is a quick, inexpensive part.
    My 2015 Rubicon also has extremely low hours for its age. All I need it for these days is plowing my large driveway and paths between buildings. I do the oil services every year, keep the battery trickle-charged, always run stabilized gas, and start it up now and then all year due to infrequent use.
    Makes sense that the fuel pump wouldn't yet have had time to wear out. When the video started down that road, I thought Honda must've sourced a pretty cheap fuel pump at the factory when they built these machines! Now I'll know how to replace it should it ever actually fail.
    Well done, knowledgeable and honorable friend!

      Thanks for the comment. I try to show what I run into because I have watched so many videos that leave you hanging on solutions and I don't want my channel to be like that. I have had spark plug troubles on a few lately so it has come to be the first thing I try even with a odd problem. Low on oil.. change the spark plug, brakes not working.... change the spark plug, some crazy problem that I would never guess the spark plug... change the spark plug. LOL sometimes that's all it is.

    2016 Rubicon - 700 miles
    Would die at 35 mph , then started random stalling when stopped, and missing / sputtering when cruising slow, was thinking fuel pump / filter until I watched this video, new spark plug also cured my issues, thanks for the info you definitely saved me some $

      I have seen more spark plug issues lately than I ever remember before. I keep all the Honda ngk plug in stock so I can swap them out. I know it should be anyway but that's the first thing I try now. Got a tire leaking air... change the spark plug.... brakes dragging change the spark plug fixes most of the problems lol

    Hey Man, I just wanted to thank you for posting the actual problem at the end of the vid. I was thinking it was the fuel pump on my 2015 Rubicon too but glad I watched your vid before I starting tearing into it. My wheeler is a yard machine with very low mileage and the plug was all gummed up too. Thanks 👍👍

    There is a large recall by Honda for this replacement. I have a 2019 Foreman, my VIN fell in the range. Took the dealership about 90 minutes. No charge. Check your VIN, might save a few bucks.

    With all that gas I was thinking a brass punch would be better than that screw driver. I've rebuild a few ranchers and foremans like this with the pump in the tank, but never had to pull a pump.

    My bike starts and runs fine until it gets up to a certain temp and then it’ll die and not start at all . It still gets spark . I took the fuel pump line off turn the key on and off a few times and fuel doesn’t come out I’m thinking it’s the pump to ?

      It's either the pump or the relay but more than likely it's the pump.

    • @FourwheelerDoctor
      @FourwheelerDoctor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Disconnect the fuel line and switch it on to make sure the pump is pumping fuel. You can also touch the injector to see if you can feel it clicking while you turn it over. I would bet your issue is fuel related.

    I have this same mode. Does it have a fuel pressure regulator? Mine has a slow start similar to this one, but when it's cold then it turns over several more times before starting. A friend has the same year model Rubicon that starts instantly when the button is pressed, and that's what I want.

    • @FourwheelerDoctor
      @FourwheelerDoctor  ปีที่แล้ว

      There isn't an easy way on these since they do not have a port to tie to. I made a test port with an old fuel line and a t that ties to my fuel gauge. But without an old line testing the pressure is practically impossible

    Found your channel and glad I did I'm seeking knowledge and wisdom I bought a Honda rancher 350 ES got a good deal the man said it was just locked up figured it would be the piston and rings pulled the jug no problem it's the bottom end that's locked what do you think it could be without tearing the whole bottom end apart any help would be appreciated will continue to watch

      Will your rod move back and forth on the crankshaft? If it will then your cranks not locked, up more than likely it is something to do with your cam chain or something clutch related if the rod will move freely.

    Hey man maybe you could help me. I got a 2012 foreman. It turns over fast but it takes 7-8 seconds of the starter turning before it will fire. I’ve put a new spark plug. I wouldn’t think it’s a fuel pump because once it is running it will not die. Runs like a top. Just takes a minute to crank.

    Aye, would you or anyone in this comment section know what a non-stop blinking “E---F” be? It’s not the Low Fuel signal, that’s “E______F”. We checked every connection that’s connected to the computer/fuel pump, and nothing.

    I have a Honda foreman 500 2018 and my friend found a gas tank and it the gas tank had water and he put it in my 4 wheeler which gave me a Bar of gas and it hasn’t started in a week i don’t know what to do.

    • @FourwheelerDoctor
      @FourwheelerDoctor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just drain the gas from the tank. Unhook the fuel like to the fuel injector and keep cycling the key on and off to pump the remaining liquid out of the pump. Put fresh gas in it and keep cycling it a few more times. Hook it back up and see if it will start.

    Moral of the story don't be a parts changer if you had fuel pressure and it didn't fall off that should have told you the fuel pump was fine lmao....first thing you should have done was pull the plug and see if it was wet right after it stopped running if it's wet change it ....if you're going to be a parts changer and try to guess what the problem is always start with the easiest cheapest part first... 🤣🤣

    • @FourwheelerDoctor
      @FourwheelerDoctor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You are so correct. The pressure was dropping below the allowable threshold (35 psi) is why I wanted to try the pump and these bikes are known to have pump problems. The plug had good spark outside of the cylinder and in all my time working on this I have never had this happen with a plug but there is a first time for everything. I just had a very similar issue that had to do with plug gap and wouldn't run on another bike. I have learned my lesson I check the plug first on everything.....brakes sticking...check the plug, tire flat... check the plug. Lol
