The animation is GORGEOUS! Jamie Hewlett can either have beautiful artwork or grotesque designs with disturbing images. He's a great inspiration either way.
Cesar R. I’m so thankful for Gorillaz in the Twenty First century. Honestly it’s nice to have something like that to enjoy when there’s less creative music that a lot of people are being exposed to.
Looking at this makes me excited for the Gorillaz animated show Edit June 2020: this aged badly, tho I think by "show" they meant Song Machine's episode format.
It's been almost 9 now, damn. I can still remember being blown away seeing this for the first time when I was only 8. I'm 16 now and I still love this video.
Andy Zhang I'm 16 and I've known about Damon and Jamie for a few years now (I was probably around 12 or 13 when I really started getting into Gorillaz, when unfortunately they were on their very long hiatus) but this is the first time I'm ever seeing this and honestly Jamie's artistic direction always blows me away.
This is my first time seeing this even though I've known Gorillaz since 2001 when I was 10. I've only recently gotten more into them though. Looks like I've missed out on a lot.

I dug out my old iPod the other day. BBC made this tune available as an MP3 download at the time, which I downloaded. Turns out this version of this song is not on the Monkey: Journey to the West album (or Spotify). But I really love this short sharp edited version, even now (October 2024). Glad I have it permanently on my old iPod! Listening to it on repeat, love the “digital” (?) effects!
I love the scenery, mythological aspect, music, artstyle, animation and consistency too. When I say consistency I mean - Monkey King is always the closest to the goal and it stays like that throughout the video, Pig is always second and the dude that emerged from water is always third, even tho they are competing, they still help each other out in midst of competition, Pig saved Monkey King and then few moments later Monkey King saves Pig, they have respect for each other, and at the end when Monkey King wins... Pig was happy for him and accepted the loss, the other guy wasn't happy cuz he was probably super serious about winning. Good stuff.
Dude, the fact that Damon can make music thats so different and no song is alike (besides people and DARE but lets just let that slide) And Jamie can create some amazing things as well. He has such amazing art and i would love to have his art book. Such creative people comming togther to make a great band thats so amazing
So many nostalgic vibes from this. It really takes me back to the time I got my first PC and spent ages browsing TH-cam. It is oddly uplifting and emotional at the same time.
Such a great tune, hearing it reminds me of everything that happened at that great Olympics. Wish I could get an extended version from Gorrilaz. I understand it was taken from a play they worked on and therefore not released? One of the best sport program tunes ever for me.
Damn I come back to this video every few years cause it's just such a vibe, the BBC would never comission something as amazing like this as a promo anymore :/
Jordan Powers ...not really... It has nothing to do with Gorillaz. Sure it was made by Jamie Hewlett with music by Damon Albarn, but completely unrelated to Gorillaz other than that.
I only know noticed that the video features some olympic sports; spear throwing, running, swimming, diving, pole vault, single bar and probably more that i must have missed
I love this so much, who created it. Every movment they make is fun and purposfull. Evry expression is fun to see. Its just such an entertaining little animation.
The animation is absolutely a wonder, but the musical score, is just as wildly fantastic. When the princess says "Wukong gong xi." I damn near fell in love!
I remember this. I saw it on the BBC in summer 2008 when I was eighteen years old. The animation looks amazing. Hewlett sure did a great job. I really like his cartoons.
The beat reminds me of Fire Coming Out of a Monkey's Head (respectively so, since Damon wrote that too, of course) but stylistically both music-wise and art-wise, it's my favorite part and I find myself always repeating it. It's so mesmerizing from the voice to nice beat to the animation.

Rhodri Williams hi pal what's it called on iTunes/Spotify or did you download this video ?
Bashman11 it's not the exact version, but, the original version is called Monkey Bee. The Diplo remix of Monkey Bee is similar to this version though.

It's called 'Monkey Bee (Journey to Beijing)'. It was only included in the Japanese release of the album...
