Glastonbury 1971 was financed by W Churchill's granddaughter /Arabella Churchill/who is now dead.
In 1971, Churchill played a major role in the development of the Glastonbury Festival. In 1979, she set up the Children's Area of the Festival and also the Theatre Area. Until her death, she ran the Theatre and Circus Fields. Her duties in the 2007 festival involved the booking and management of some 1500 separate acts. She also founded and was the director of the Children's World charity.
She is forgotten by many and unknown by more.

and your point being that Michael Eavis takes credit for everything concerned with the festival right? If so you wouldn't be the first person I've met to take that view and as for how much profit goes to charity rather than to his own bank balance well that's another issue altogether....

That week in 1992 is Still one of the best weeks of my life and i m 50 now! Got to jam with Dave Swarbrick and was hiked over the fence by neighbouring farmer Mr Vickers. Went alone with no tent , had no drama and met lovely people. My purchase piece of canvas from the army store was a sad looking affair between 2 sticks but did the job and my best investment was a potty! And now i run my own boutique festival in Oz and many other events. No better inspiration. Thanks for sharing!

I love how everyone will tar all travellers with the same brush, as someone who was brought up with these type of travellers I remember the bullying as a child. It is because of the narrow minds of people that they will judge before they actually get to know these people. The groups that I lived with would tidy up there rubbish before they left any site. There may have been quite a bit of drinking at times, but they would have worked the tides. I have and will always class these as my family!

The fields around Worthy Farm in Somerset, would kindle a warm glow in the heart of Donald Trump. An eight-mile long, 20-foot high fence runs round the farm and the 12 neighbouring properties, encasing Britain's biggest music festival - Glastonbury, of course.
The festival might even be more secure than Mr Trump's planned border wall between the US and Mexico.
There are in fact two fences. A slightly shorter one sits in the shadow of the large barrier with enough room between them to drive an emergency vehicl

But they are their own worst enemy and leave the sites in a state and wind peeps up entirely the wrong way I dont know why they havent thought further ahead and get out the country. All the locals love Glasto, now they are renting their land to the festival:) The levellers live in nice houses these days, are they still vegi? I saw a documentary, showing them doing a roast dinner from Tesco on their tour:):) Glastonbury is still the coolest festival on earth, The Eavis family are cool, they have done the right thing, getting it to where it is. Lots of smaller festivals about with an old school vibe. I Don't think anyone will ever recreate the Ozric Tentacles, Hawkwind,RDF Back To The Planet scene though. Saying that all those bands are still going and sounding good.

The travellers had been going to Glastonbury for years before all this nonsense, Eavis welcomed the travellers for their ideas of a more creative festival, then turned his back on them and turned them away. Eavis now turned Glastonbury festival into this nostalgia commercialisation bandwagon pop festival, all that had been creative as now turned weaker and now lost it's vibes of what Glastonbury festival was once all about. I have not got never ever intention of ever returning again, i have had the best of Glastonbury festival that can never return back ever again to its former glory⚑🅰

I was there in 92 and witnessed the Dark Side of the travellers. A bunch of them pinched a load of beer from a guy who'd set up a stall selling it. He didn't stand a chance. Also an individual spent an entire evening terrorising a group of young guys who just wanted to chill around a fire and sing Beatles songs. He kept insisting that one of them fight him. I'm sorry but there's little doubt these people were from the travelling community. I've met some dear sweet gentle souls on the road, in Epping Forest where they camped in 91 picking shrooms and Portobello road, so I know they're not all bad. How is it possible they would be? But sadly, lawlessness gives shitty people opportunities to express themselves in all the wrong ways. I do believe Glasto 92 was the last decent one, I'm so glad I was there.

@4th_Lensman_of_the_apocalypse Is that true though...? I'm pretty sure it was in '99 that the Manc and Liverpudian hoodies took control of the old routes in (the culvert, the trees, and the gap made in the fence by a traveller's lorry), and started charging people to get in. That was also when the scallies started robbing lots of folks. I saw it happen with my own eyes: a dude was tripping his balls off and some black guys approached him and started patting him down, looking for stuff to take. I think all that made them spend the million on the fence. It was getting wild/unsafe.

chipsthedog1 Agree about the song I was there but biased in which way? Were you there when travellers decided to kick the fk out of little college students in there tents? They screwed up and lost their playground. I would however like to discuss the mustache community within the police 😂

a few hundred of us escaped and parked up 2 miles away on an ancient track and heard them play that very gig.

as the police and thatcher put pressure on the convoy heads,it attracted violent types who wanted violence same story, every good scene gets ruined by wankers who have to come along and act tough..why couldent they have their own hard man festy where they can pose and kick shit out of each other?no,no they have to ruin it for everyone else..i met original travellers when i was young and green, they were nice ppl never forget them, sit down by the fire have a cup of tea.i,m like wow !accepted.shame!

There were a lot of decent travellers but there were too many liggers, cling ons and nutjobs aka Brew Crew who caused too much trouble.

Typical "travellers" - out for as much as they can get.Trying to live outside "the system" yet still happy to leach from the state they so dispise. You can see they clearly love all the attention. The fact that most of them are probably ex-public school boys roughing it before a year in India and of to Uni is another issue altogether.
