  • SORRY FOR THE EDITING MISTAKE AT 28:30 🙈🙈🙈 Of course I chose that moment to take a drink of water...
    It’s ironic that some of you will be introduced to Meyerbeer in the context of his opera about religious persecution, as it was exactly his religion as a German Jew and the anti-Semitism that was obviously very prevalent in the early 20th century in Europe that got his music banned from Germany.
    DON'T GET ME WRONG - I think Susanne Johnston sings well, but I think the whole production for this aria leaves a lot to be desired...

    You videos are very enjoyable and instructive. Would you be willing to do record an 'Analysis & Reaction' for Jonas Kaufmann - Turandot, Atto III: "Nessun Dorma" ? An aria performed ad nauseam worldwide, but that particular rendition is enigmatic: a tenor voice with a baritone timbre. Many thanks in advance.

    Anna, I'm looking for some names from you of singers who still can sing "bel canto" creditably, and not that "thing" some people refer to as opera!😅
    And in answer to your question...Onegin over Johnston every day of the week.

    is it generally up to a singer's own discretion whether he ornaments or not or does the conductor have the last word?
    EDIT: I might as well have kept on watching until 31:28 instead of commenting prematurely 😆

    • @operaanna
      @operaanna  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      haha! I will add that it is generally up to the singer (at least in my experience), and if you have a good conductor/musical team, they'll even help you come up with some unique coloratura, but on the flip side, you never know what *vision* the conductor has for their interpretation and in this day and age, I can imagine a singer's ornaments being shut down, because it doesn't align with what they want. Sounds crazy, but... yeah.

    I don't know much of Meyerbeer. I know more his arias the the full operas. I also remember watching some of L'Africaine as a teenager, but the French of the singers was so muddled up I couldn't follow.

    When one speak about the ugonotti is no possible not mention the outstanding performance of Corelli, Simionato and Sutherland in Milan "Scala". That representation is in the story of the opera.

    I'm working on some music from this work right now as well! Tackling the hymn and cavatina that Marcel sings before the Page enters. Definitely not being a huge nerd and following along with my score for the video..........

      Nice!! Towards the end I show my own score 😜😜😜 How are you finding the role so far?

    • @iliekmegapie
      @iliekmegapie 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@operaanna I'm really enjoying it! I'm still figuring out where exactly on the bass/baritone spectrum I fit best, and Marcel has been such a fun and enriching way to explore my lower range. Plus, I love diving into music that's less well known and performed than when it was written.
      In that vein, if you're looking for some bonkers less-known male coloratura to react to, I'd *LOVE* to see your take on the trio that Idreno, Oroe, and Assur sing at the opening of Rossini's 'Semiramide'. There's a few clips of Sam Ramey singing Assur floating around on here that totally blow me away every time

      @@iliekmegapie That's awesome! I also really enjoy finding the underrated or just under-performed things, and it makes you realize there's just SO much music out there that we don't hear, because we're so obsessed with the 'classics' (which are also great...) These sounds like awesome things to check out! If not here then over on the Patreon....

    Anna, what's your take on Kathleen Battle being invited back to the Met, after she was let go back in 1994, for being an absolute holy terror in her treatment of fellow artists, and opera house personnel?

    • @operaanna
      @operaanna  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can't pretend to know the ins and outs of that, but I have heard some HORROR stories of Battle... Let's just say, the MET has made some interesting casting decisions in the past decades.

    Great community of thinking Opera nerds over here. Ya gotta be thinking or you mess things up. People are creatures of habit. We are unthinkingly imitate, which is wrong. Then we also follow fashion, which is equally wrong. 50 or 60 years ago people were ornamenting far too much and people rightly complained. Now the fashion is not to add anything at all but what is written and the pedagogy is simply out the window and forgotten. What suffers is the musicality and the effectiveness of the dramatic situations. Just keep pointing this out!
