    This is a very overlooked piece of the puzzle. When I used to work in the trades, the rule of thumb was “everything takes twice as long as you think it will”. It was scarily accurate for small tasks. Bigger ones would often balloon much higher.

      That's because you have to account for the fact that everyone else around you will be doing absolutely nothing. Been in the trades for 30 years and this is the reason even at 50 I am willing to walk away from the union trades all together. Way to many deadbeats being protected while a small handful end up doing all the work.

    700 hours seems like a lot for programming but I definitely spent 1000+ hours coding before I got my first programming job.

It actually takes on average a little over 100 hours per song, and I usually just release it because it's close enough and it's gonna take me forever to be more prolific than Bach at this rate. And that's why I'm still working on my art level after 17 years and haven't tried to find work in the art field yet. AI art is there, but it just changes the playing field and doesn't wipe it out of existence yet.
    You think that drawing is easy because any kid can do it until you really try and then figure out that even linework requires good design. e.g. straight line -> curved -> long straight -> short sharp curve.
    It's just linework. Then you have shape design in tones, taking into account lighting, saturation, hardness and softness of edges and trying to balance it in a way that things look correct and not jarring.
    And then you look at the tons of people doing great work out there and you think "man, how much time did that person spend to get better? And there's like literally hundreds of thousands of them!"

    I sent you an email which I will forward wondering if you could make a job for me solving philosophical problems and applying them to life. I would like to do a uni course on it you see and I have a question;
    How do you not beat yourself up or identify with your failures? I have been comparing myself to what I could be. I know I can be great but I keep slacking and making decisions out of line with that ideal version of me

      You play the hand you’re dealt. We all have unfair advantages. For example, I’m tall and intelligent, but bald and shortsighted. Don’t waste time thinking about what’s outside of your control. Instead, leverage the unfair advantages you do have. We all have them.
      You’re speaking English. Do you know how many free educational resources are available in this language? You have an internet connection. Right there, two of the largest unfair advantages are yours. Unfair advantages are all over the place. Don’t roll around complaining about how unfair it is. Play the game; play the game to win.
