How To Plant Tulips in Crates for Cut Flowers

- The last of my tulip bulbs are FINALLY getting planted and I am putting them in crates! Crate planting has it's advantages - it is easier to plant and pull your tulips in crates vs a trench because the soil is loose. You can also move the crates into a greenhouse for earlier blooming if you choose! Watch this video to see my method.

Thanks so much for sharing !
Just be aware of squirrels and foxes. I have tulips planted in smartpots and have covered them with aviary wire. My pots were dug up almost immediately after planting.
We don’t have foxes in town, we do have squirrels but not many at my downtown location because there are not many trees around. 🤞🤞🤞
What size are your crates and where would you suggest buying them from?
All my crates are the ones that come with my tulip bulb orders
Will this work in zone 3?
Maybe? I didn’t have as good of luck as I hoped with them surviving the winter. I think they froze and thawed too much
Do you have any issues with squirrels digging them up to eat? If so have you found anything that helps to deter them?
I never have luckily
Cover with fine wire mesh
Wire mesh 1 inch squares and pin into ground if planting in garden bed.
Where do you purchase the crates?
They came with my wholesale bulb orders
I bought tulips and daffodils through Colorblends and they give you a crate if your order is big enough.
@@melissaschloneger9902 Thank you, Melissa.
Witam jakiej ziemi używasz do sadzenia tulipanów?
Just regular potting soil
I planted some tulips in containers to try this year. I am going to leave them outside because I do not have a covered space to keep them. I am zone 7a. Have you had issues with leaving them outside?
I did last year because they did not get enough moisture. I am going to watch them closely this year and will give updates!
I am in zone 7a. Planted several types of tulip bulbs in containers, they all rotted due to untimely rains and no snow. This year thinking of experimenting with 7:44 crate planting and leave them in garage.
Here in the UK gardeners often plant up decorative pots of bulbs for a spring display and it certainly works for me. They are just on my patio by the back door so I can enjoy them from the kitchen window. I am in what you would call a Zone 8 I think. Temp. Today is 6C. Further North they place the pots in a sheltered position until the weather warms up. It’s such a shame that tulips rarely bloom in their second season but I usually replant a few on my allotment with some success. I hope your project is successful.
That sounds wonderful - I love tulips in pots!
Do you know the size of these crates?
I’m about to purchase 24 x 16 x 8 - do you think that’s an okay size (for a humid 9b if that matters - I’m a newbie)?
Thank you!
These are the ones that came with my bulbs when I ordered them. I will say I didn’t have a very good success rate. Lots of the bulbs rotted
I look forward to your blooms..I plant in pots so this might be a new way for me next season. Thanks for your videos!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Christina 🎄🎄🎄🎄💚🙃
How often do you water?
I have learned to soak really well when planting, but if the tulips freeze solid in the crates, they will rot in the spring. So they need to be kept just above freezing or need to be very insulated. At least in my zone
beautiful!!!
Thank you!
I hate to be a downer but I planted layers of tulips in large pots and surrounded the pots with garbage bags full of leaves. They were rotten by spring. So 😢
Oh no! Sorry to hear that
I had the same thing happen to me.
Another note, I’m in 5b in SE Michigan.
Those that do tulips in pots recommend covering them, with minimal liquid going in until things warm up. I lost pots of tulips because they were too wet - those that I kept in cold area that had limited precipitation did amazing.
