NOTE: For best practices, you should wear goggles and a mask when working with DE. Exposure to excessive quantities can cause lung damage.

A face mask is a must. I will tell the world and not be ashamed to say it DE kills bed bugs too! Now I'm hoping it'll kill the Thrips that's taking over my hibiscus plant. Great video.

DE is also used in livestock feed to combat internal parasites.

That is not true it's only small enough to harm insects it does not harm humans or animals. Please don't spread disinformation without first researching and understanding what the product is actually used for. What does diatomaceous earth do for the human body?
When taken by mouth, diatomaceous earth is used as a source of silica, for treating high cholesterol levels, for treating constipation, and for improving the health of skin, nails, teeth, bones, and hair. When applied to the skin or teeth, diatomaceous earth is used to brush teeth or remove unwanted dead skin cells.
Seven makes a pebble version which can be used on the ground (lawns) or buried. I use it when I plant the bulbs adding some Seven in the ground with the bulb. End of problem.
Someone may have mentioned this, or you may have already thought about it. But, I think I would give the Gladiola bed a thorough sprinkling of diatomaceous earth after you plant them.

DE is safe as in nontoxic, but it can do the same thing to humans' eyes that it does to bugs. It can definitely scratch your eyes and cause terrible burning and redness and dryness for several days even with a little puff of it floating in thair. It dessicates the bugs by scratching the outer layer and allowing moisture to leak out of the bug essentially. DE does not dissolve in water. It will mix with water, but it does not dissolve like salt or sugar does. It just floats around in the water. DO NOT USE in the wind!!! It will get in your eyes. It would also do the same thing to dog's and cat's eyes so be careful with it around animals. I love your videos and your energy. Keep up the good work and don't let the thrips get you down!!

DE is affective for slugs and is also used in pool filters in order to help clean the water..

Diatomacious earth is made of millions of silicon skeletons of microscopic organisms called diatoms. These are like little shards of glass to soft bodied insects like thrips.

Great to see you shining once more. I was thinking how growing is not like other activities. You read up, take care, do everything right and just one thing can stuff it up. It’s usually windy weather for me. I therefore have a minor obsession with staking and plant support. Yours will now be thrips prevention. Very important not to get defeated, which you haven’t, and now you are on your way once again.

A dust mask is important too because DM can severely irritate the lungs 🫁 and the fine dust can easily be breathed in when it’s airborne. ♥️ Stay safe. 😍

Fabulous videos! I don't know about food grade; however; generally speaking?, Diatomaceous Earth can seriously damage lungs because of its size, shape, and extremely sharp nature. Wearing a good mask and only using it in no wind outside is a general precaution. I learn so much from you. Love, love, love your videos.

I'll be your cheerleader as I wasn't able to start my seeds this year because my son and granddaughter are moving in with me and they have the bsmt. apartment where I would have worked on my seeds. Love Arbico beneficials. I also buy the fly predators (we have Nigerian Dwarf Goats and Chickens). NO flies with Arbico fly predators.

I use Diatomaceous Earth for my kitten litter pans and I sprinkled around the house to hopefully avoid fleas next year. I may try it for the beetles if it works. They are one of my biggest nemesis besides rabbits.

Oh THRIP!!?! Not sure why but they really give me the creeps😟 ..tiny little suckers!😕 I use the DE under my rudbeckia & hosta for slugs. I'll now be dusting all my glad corms too as a precaution. Thanks for keeping it real.✌
Beneficial nematodes are one of the best things you can buy. They kill all sorts of larve . It took care of my snail,slug, and japanese beetle problem. I'm going to get some again to see if it works in the red lily beetle,fingers crossed.
Probably wash the net bags the corms came in too if you are going to use them again 💜
I do love your honesty with your mistakes. Especially when viewers highlight mistakes, you acknowledge it. I had to stop watching garden answer after Laura did a how to lift your dhalia video and didn’t know all her tubers had crown gall. Many viewers did and she failed to acknowledge it. Then she went on to say she’d be giving them away...just be honest. We can’t know everything and it’s a poor show not to be honest.x

I think I read somewhere using a diluted hydrogen peroxide/water solution on infected soil helps to rid the thrips population.
I'm going to have to get some of the DE! I was battling leaf hoppers all last year I wonder if they're the same as Thirds? They sucked the life out of my plants and spread diseases. 😡
This year I'm going to try lady bugs and marigolds to help with pest. We shall see how it goes.

You know I also follow hosta growers who grow from seed. They use nematodes in the soil when planting seeds. I did that this year coupled with heating the soil for seeds And boiling the water for watering plus using the mosquito bits and sticky strips And need oil. I can’t stand the gnats. Now I have to worry about Thrips!!!😫....WTT?
I'll have to look into using the nematodes indoors- I'm so nervous to screw it up!

Nicole, I have a question. If the nematodes are in your fridge how will they survive with nothing to eat (since they're in a box instead of in soil)? I've read from gardeners that looking under a microscope shows that 50% of them die just in transit to your home! Because these are live creatures- albeit microscopic- i think they need to be put in the garden immediately just as you would with ladybugs or lace wings.
We are still under snow. The company instructed to keep them in the fridge for a month and then put them out! It’s my first time with them so I don’t know.

What seeds did you sow with your mother-in- law? I find your comments on what you are sowing quite helpful. Watched video earlier this month about soil blocking. You had already sown phlox, delphinium, foxglove, Iceland poppies, dusty Miller, rudbeckia and sweet peas. Last weekend you planted ???

I have fungus gnats in some of my seedlings. So today I went to the store, but I couldn't find neem oil or mosqito bits where I am here in Canada. The lady at the greenhouse, said she could only ever find the neem oil on Amazon.
However, she told me a mixture of 1-3 parts alcohol to water works for killing bugs, thrips included, and peroxide and water 1-3 works for killing bug eggs in the soil.
Anyone else on here ever try or have success with this method?

Amazon also has the Mosquito Bits, and if those are all out, they also come in a different shape - it's a donut shaped cake of the same material. The only difference is the donut shaped one is a compact, pressed version, so it holds its shape for 1 month in Water. You can toss one in a bucket of water and let it soak for at least 24 hours, then water your plants with that water.
My daughter's dog decided to drink out of that water bucket while she was soaking hers! And absolutely nothing happened to her pooch, just wanted to include that, you know - just in case!

I bought my Mosquito Bits on Amazon. Neem Oil from a store, I’ve seen it at several, but I’m in Michigan. The peroxide worked the first time with the yellow sticky paper (it’s the best) however I got them a second time and I trying Mosquito bits now because the peroxide isn’t working and my plants are showing some yellowing, good luck🤞🏼
@@pixiepetalsflowerfarm yes, I've heard the 2 point punch of the BT (= Mosquito Bits, or Mosquito Dunks) and the yellow sticky papers works best too. Just make sure to follow up with the Mosquito Bits water long enough to cover the gnat life cycle. It takes more than one treatment.
Apparently they hatch around every 3 weeks.
My daughter had them quite badly, and she made sure to rewater with the BT water every 19 days (at the latest), which is just a tad early than the 3 week mark. This made sure to interrupt their life cycle. It worked very well for her. By the time it was around the 6 week mark, there weren't any visible gnats around, but she kept it up just in case!
Now she's gnat free! YaY!!

I did not! I didn't think about it at the time. I will use DE after pulling them this fall.
Did the DE work to keep the Japanese beetles off your neighbor's grapevines? I will need to try that, because they are a problem for me!
It didn’t completely keep them off. It washes away and stops working when it’s wet.

never herd of Thrips are the local to your area? Last year something striped everything off of my Zinnia plants it was crazy and it happened overnight.
They are not local, very wide terrain, unfortunately. They are monsters!
Can you put the germinating trays on the floor heat vents for the furnace - only one tray for each but it will make a small difference.
Good idea! I did put one tray on the top of the pellet stove LOL. Fortunately I had a few seeds that didn't need heat and my Iceland Poppies germinated so I was able to take them off the heat to make more room!
I put some of my small trays on top of my fridge. They did great.

I am not sure that they will last two seasons out of the ground. They might dry up.

Is applying DE only beneficial at the end of the season or do you think it would be beneficial to apply in the spring prior to planting? I bought 2K corms from Fred Nagel, but I’m not sure if I should pre-treat just in case they come with hidden nasties.
