Here is my review of one of my favourite Frédéric Malle fragrances, Promise.

I tested this over lunch at a mall across from a conference center and I had a special outfit all picked out for my talk later that day. Some particulate from this probably got on my jacket from when I sprayed the blotter… but I pretty much smelled of this over the other high performance perfume that I wore that day. Let’s just say everyone who passed by me at the conference got a whiff 😂. I was a bit embarrassed because this wasn’t my favorite at first sniff, but over the course of the wet rainy day, I loved it so much. I agree that it has a personality and over that day(and the following) it was a beautiful lush green, earthy, mossy, gently sweet fragrance that I ended up missing it once it was gone. It was like coming back to an ugly city after a rainy hike in the Pacific Northwestern trails. I may spring for a bottle at some point.
I ended up selling my bottle! Too potent. Gets a bit much for me.

On first impression this reminds me of The Moon in that it has that fruity shisha vibe only with apple instead. I much prefer this though, The Moon smells a bit like fermented fruit to me. I'm going to give Promise its first full wear tomorrow.

Couldnt agree more my feathered friend... this is the only one of the desert gems that made me pull my wallet out for a full bottle... go figure thr cheapest of the bunch is the best 👍🤷♂️🐑🦆

I love ambrox. This is probably using a more expensive form of ambrox, or that IFF one called grisalva. Grisalva is extremely diffusive and tenacious. Ambrox, at least the good ones, smell very similar to white ambergris. I just think the likes of sauvage etc have given it a bad name, when its not the ambrox they don't like in fact. Ambrox is one of the nicest synthetics, its not a harsh chemical smell at all. It's pretty much in everything that you can't afford to put ambergris in to be honest, and in most cases does just a good job.

Great video Rich ! I own this one and my girlfriend avoids my like the plague for the first couple hours after spraying this 🤣cause of how strong it is but what can you do. I love it.

You are absolutely right about Promise. I sprayed it on my husband in the store and couldn't stop smelling him through out the entire day and night, if you know what I mean😉 I will definitely add this to our collection. Thanks for your input, Rich!

this honestly reminds me of somersby cider. i have 2ml and i think i will never run out of it cause i rarely wear something this strong, not bad at all, but prefer the moon because of the raspberry
I also prefer the Moon because of the raspberry accord built around that cheesy Oud top note which gives the sourness to the raspberry. I think it's clever work by Rasquinet. I was deciding between the two actually and never thought I would spend so much on a perfume. Last bottle available in Ireland and went for it. Glad I did. Love the moon. Promise is lovely though.

I didn’t get on with the apple when I sampled this. At even the ‘’cheapest’ price, maybe that’s a good thing.
Wazamba has changed my mind on apple though, so maybe I should give it another try.

Love this, thanks! You. mentioned it being synthetic, is that something that is widely known, or do you just pick up on it through experience? I've got a 10ml and I love it too. I've heard that the less synthetic, the more it evolves and this one certainly does evolve. But maybe I've got it backwards? I don't know.

I think a general rule of thumb is that naturals are more volatile and do tend to change the more time passes. I _think_ synthetics evolve but just at a slower rate.
What I meant by synthetic in this context is that it has this a "manmade" quality to the smell, does that make sense? I'm not sure it does lol. Like, something that wouldn't occur through natural processes.
As long as you love it, that's all that matters. It's your money!
I think (and I use) fragrance content for signposting and reference, not for making decisions for other people. I think there's too much marketing in fragcomm now and not enough representation of consumers, that's what I am, a consumer

Looking at the notes this could be similar to the recent release by Nishane, Shem. I know you didn't like them that much and I know the price is absolutely hilariously ridiculous!
The price of promise is reasonable compared to the other "desert gems" and other middle Eastern "inspired" perfumes. I highly recommend trying this, not a blind buy though!
@@RichMitch One review in fragrantica mentions how this reminded them of the perfumes from the house of Amouage when they first came out, which is also a good sign!

As Jura said before, Ambroxan is a powerful but smooth molecule which can be dosed quite highly and won't overtake the composition (see Bois d'Argent with ca. 11%). I'm surprised you didn't mind the Amberwood material(s) which are very prominent to my nose (and make up to the great projection this perfume has). They are quite well balanced as one would expect from Mr. Ropion but the overall feeling of this composition is a bit too harsh for my tastes (tested few times from a tiny decant)
Since this review I have changed my mind and sold the perfume 🤣

@rich Mitch Dominique Ropion made Oud Aquilaria in collaboration with Oman Luxury. Scent is basically the same with Oud note added. Interested to hear your thoughts.
That's interesting, Marwan. I've never tried anything from them or Middle Eastern brands more generally but they're increasing their fame with some releases. I've heard of Oud Aquilaria, actually, but never tried it.
In my search for new, modern perfumes to enjoy, I may turn East next year... Western designer perfume seems to be dead ☹️
I have a chance to buy this fragrance for very very good price. Didn't smell it before but my friend with who I'm sharing fragrance craziness says it's wonderful and great performer. I'm just little worried coz nice weather is coming so CAN IT be worn on temperatures ABOUT 20°c max?
Please need and answer to figure out what to do.
Can you go to a malle counter and try it? It's not an easy wear on warm days, powerful all day

How long have you had it? 10ml is usually at least 100 sprays out of a full size atomizer.

Are we suppose to get all the note listed on the fragrance ? For instanse i only pickup on the cypriol-apple-castorium being the most prominent to my brain , there are other like the rosemary-pink pepper in the opening, then the labdanum giving the "dry" dusty wood furniture feel... the rose that everyones talking about.. i don't get it! even though it may be the most smelled note on a fragrance for me
Depends. Sometimes the power of suggestion is enough to smell something, sometimes we do or don't smell something because of skin chemistry. It's a very strange phenomenon
@@RichMitch ah yes i heard about it, i think this can be proved upon testing fragrance on your skin vs on a test strip
If i recall when i spray promise on a blotter i could have sworn it is a bright fragrance for about 90% of the scent life... cypriol still being very prominent with a little bit of that juicy green apple with a little bit of sourness in it and there's this airy "lightness" to it which i could only have assumed to be the rose.. finally presenting it self, the funk animalicness here is smooth and not being a major kick for sure it has become the supporting note along with the other woodsy element...
I actually love fragrance like this, even though it is quite linear and doesn't change to a whole complete different beast, it is still complex enough to spark a conversation between each wearer.
Talking to you and ramsey helps me a whole lot discovering exactly what i smelled in between the note, as i hear you ramble on about the fragrance, i get to cross check the nuance you and i get whether it is the same or not... a completely new way to enjoy the perfume for me hahaha

That cypriol is so HUGE it honestly kinda ruins it for me. I wish it was toned down so as to let the other ingredients speak clearer.
