Such an underrated classic. I snubbed Midnight Run when it first came out because Deniro had just done "The Untouchables" and I wanted more movies along that line. When I saw the trailer for Midnight Run I thought "wtf is this?!" Deniro doing comedy looked extremely corny. A few years later I finally watched Midnight Run and I immediately fell in love. I've lost count how many times I've watched it.
I've probably seen this movie 50 times and I still love it every time. Deep characters without being slow. It's funny, exciting and touching all at the same time. Proof that you don't need egregious violence or sex to make an outstanding movie!
My favourite movie, with Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Rainman and Christmas Vacation..... My dad passed away yesterday, and these where our fav. movies.... God bless Pappa!!!!!!
Watched this in a packed theatre when it came out in '88. The entire house was laughing so hard during the mob guys pay phone "sparing" scene you couldn't hear the dialogue of Dennis Farina. Good times!
I agree, but it's also got many very touching moments. It probably is made even more funny by the fact that the characters are deep and have an important individual story to tell. This could have been just another Smokey and the Bandit, but the writing made it way better.
If like me you watched this film when it aired o n British TV you'll recall the extra mile of patronizing overkill the BBC went to in dubbing over *every single swearword* in the movie? BBC & ITV ruined many films with this stupid nannying back when we only had 4 channels between the 70sto90s (only Channel 4 played films as they were). ANYWAY with Midnight Run they went the extra mile and dubbed over EVERY SINGLE SWEARWORD even"S.O.B". BUT they must have gotten voice actors who could perfectly mimmick De Niro & the cast. The most common phrase in the movie was "Stinkin Bum" (seriously ask any Brit, or look yourself I'll try and find a clip of the *BBC Edition" 😂). Any moron knew it was dubbed from lip sync *but* it REALLY sounded like the character "saying it". So apparently they not only hired mimmicks but got them to say *Stinkin* & *bum* in every actors voice in every possible pitch tone inflection (angry sarcastic, off the cuff, shouted, whispered)... JUST TO SAVE OUR IMPRESSIONABLE SOULS FROM WORDS WE'D BEEN SAYING SINCE INFANT SCHOOL!?? 😂😂😂 It didn't ruin the film like it did with others (eg Robocop & The Last Boy Scout where the cussing was part of a joke or emphasised certain important dialogue). But in this one instance..they unintentionally made it EVEN FUNNIER merely thinking about how absurd & pointless yet profoundly difficult a task it must've been😂😂😂 Jesus it would have been far cheaper to just play it in Russian with subtitles or...I dunno...NOT AT ALL ?
Saw it twice (!) in the summer of '88 and loved it then. I've had it on DVD for at least 5 years and never get tired of it. My wife was born in '82 and it's since become one of her favorite movies (we trade lines from all the time). I even work with people born AFTER the movie came out whom I lend my copy to and they've since become fans as well.
The only TRUE "best of" clip reel is the DVD of the entire movie. There isn't one second of Midnight Run that is wasted, it's all good from the first frame to the closing title sequence.
yeah baby.this is one fucking great movie right up there with godfather 2.comedy,drama,action,acting,dialogue,pace,music,plot, this is the PERFECT MOVIE.
Alonso Mosley is six feet six inches of hostility and resentment throughout this movie until he busts out that shit-eating grin at the airport when he realises he finally has Jimmy Serrano in his grasp. Just priceless. I can't think of a film with better casting or ensemble playing.
Didn't cou t how many times I watched this movie. First time, it was a -20c in Sofia, Bulgaria. Then , watched for a week continuously. Now, after 3 decades plus I watch it whenever I feel bored. De Niro's one of best films.
It's funny you should say that. In the AFI's salute special to De Niro (lifetime achievement award, I believe), Leo Dicaprio says the exact same thing. His father took him to see _Midnight Run_ , and told young Leo, "that man (De Niro) is one of that best actors you'll ever see on film". The senior Dicaprio is a good judge of talent. 🤗
