Yeah, I also like that she's sort of down-to-earth and she's not a sore loser ☺️ she said in a radio interview that she invested her own money but she don't regret it because she received a lot of recognition and she's going on tour now to promote her new album 🥳
For Ireland, people really need to be mentioning Sergio Jaen more, the 22 year-old staging director. The strength of the performance isn't the song itself - it's how they told the story onstage. I anticipate Sergio will be booked and busy for the next several decades.
I saw Bambi's national(?) performance and thought it was very Lana del Rey. The Eurovision staging and look really made it a strong and memorable performance.
Shout out to Marina Satti as well as a winner, who charted a BUNCH with her new album, even though she faced and still faces a ton of backlash from certain people here in Greece. That didn't stop her from putting out an album that charted globally on Spotify and in Greece 4/6 songs are on places 1-4 in the TOP 5 and her future lives and concerts in the country sold out in minutes. She is an icon and we love her!
@@koelkastridder3388 Some Greeks were not on board with the songs from the beginning, saying it's kitch and paints Greece in a bad light, also never caught the comedic bits and Marina answered back actually with some stories and a mixtape in the album as well and they got even more pissed. Plus people who are on board with Israel, some actually famous and others in contact with the government, had a HUGE issue with the yawing, lel. But she is still immensely popular with most people and now outside of Greece as well!
@@roanoke7551 a lot of greeks are self-hating about the fact that we're balkan and were horrified that we decided to send a song with a more eastern sound, as well as the other points made in the previous reply. but really her huge success on the charts shows that most greeks are with her! it's just an annoying very vocal minority
Since his disqualification, I've seen more Joost fan content than ever before. There were Estonia memes and lyrics videos (someone mentioned "the k-popification of Estonia") but Joost is everywhere.
Everything he does is news here in the Netherlands too. He's fucking with the news outlets too, posting a video clearly from a plane saying "filmed at a secret location" and the news outlets go "the secret location is probably a plane to Vancouver, he's performing there this weekend!" like they cracked the code 😂
Totally agree. At the same time, I'm so proud of our people's music taste: 3 televote points in the final and all the supportive comments I've seen from Ukrainians on different social media platforms make me feel less sad
Looking back now, we f***ing dodged a bullet there (in 2023). 😆 Käärijä is one of the hottest Eurovision stars still and we didn't have to host this hot mess. 😅
among winners of ESC24, gabe, is you !! you really become the mvp that kept his calm and was relaying confirmed info and this was so valuable to all those who were reading all kind of insanity online. I'm personally a new follower of yours and here to stay, and i'm saying this while i have no certitude of if i'll keep watching esc itself after how horrific it was this year. big big big shoutout to the fan media all around who made it a game changer and who, i'm sure, must have been struggling themselves while attending the event. x
No matter how the trial ends up for Joost Klein, it’s fair to say that it was problematic to dq him. He wasn’t arrested, and if you’re not arrested you can usually go to work as usual.
I'm so happy for Baby Lasagna -- even though he didn't win, he's wildly popular now and I can't think his album will be anything but really successful! And Joost - he is still really popular and I hope this experience ends up a net gain for him after the raw deal he got. And I also really hope this is just the beginning of a lot of success for Bambie Thug too! I'm going to be following all of them plus Jerry Heil & Alyona Alyona too! I'll listen to them no matter what language they sing in but I hope they might do a little more English just because its the only language I know. LOL! Anyway.....so glad you'll keep posting videos! I get such ESC withdrawl, that will help immensely! THank you for all of the informative and entertaining videos!
Totally agree, except the English. Europe is full of interesting languages and I enjoy songs that are not in English much more. Except the British delegations´s, of course. It makes them more authentic and memorable. For example, I just can´t imagine the 5miinust ja Puuluup´s song in English. It´s not so hard these days to google the lyrics and have them translated and explained.
@@martavdz4972 I totally understand and totally agree that most songs just wouldn't be the same. And I do Google to know what the songs are saying. It's just that even if I "know" the meaning, there's just something different about understanding in the moment you're listening. 💕
Yeah, I am actually happy that he is the former head, even though I used to like our previous attempts on ESC 😂 Gabe is the most accurate and respectful ESC journalist, so calling him out in the video about bullying is so random and hilarious 😂
Great work, Gabe! I´m actually a subscriber of the Jan Bors channel too (obviously I´m a subscriber of your channel), but this time his reactions made zero sense to me. I was very surprised about his attack against the ESC fanbase and Gabe in particular. I don´t know if he was being loyal to EBU or if he has some personal connection to Israel, but attacking Gabe was really bizarre in my opinion. However I think that Jan Bors has made many interesting videos even though I often disagree with him.
My big winner is Angelina Mango. 22yo she appears from nowhere and wins Sanremo, then high in odds for a long time she places herself 7th always performing perfectly and leaving silently as a professional mature singer (she could have blamed Rai for the leaks on Israel). Meanwhile she performs imagine, la rondine, in fila indiana unplugged, gifting us with gem songs
Well not from nowhere. Our national presenter mentioned her famous musician parents every time they did an introduction of her. I'm not saying that she's there just because of her parents and not of her own talent, not at all - I liked the song and she is really good, but having two successful musician parents must have at least made a reasonable amount goodwill for her. At the very minimum, she got a good musical upbringing.
@@pyridonfaltis9761 but if I'm gonna be honest, it's not like her parents were given enough credit. Her mother was the singer of Matia Bazar in their least successful moment, while her father was famous but extremely overlooked. He was literally one of the best singers in Italy and nobody really recognized this, even after his sudden and tragic death.
@@pyridonfaltis9761 Being called a nepo baby implies that you somehow benefited from your parents' position/status. But despite being the daughter of one of the most beloved (but overlooked) singers of his generation, she wasn't shortlisted as one of the finalists of Sanremo Giovani (the youth section of Sanremo). She had to release two of the biggest hits in Italy to get on Amadeus' radar.
Thx Gabe, I literally agree with all of it. To add, Joost sold out many of his shows in literal seconds, they needed to move Warsaw concert to a bigger venue, and 7 of his songs are since the sh*t hit the fan on Polish viral top 50. He is now also on Billboard 200, where he entered with 50 something place. To be honest I think maybe this was a better finish for him than being in top 5 because let's be honest, he wouldn't beat Nemo's vocals
when looking at the UK vs Ireland, obviously there's a lot to say about the songs themselves and how well the performances were executed but I think there's also a big difference in how the staging was conceptualised in both. Both performances focused heavily on bringing music video-level cinematography but they achieved this in very different ways. The UK created a whole set for Olly to perform in, which, while allowing for some fantastic moments, detached the performance from the arena and the audience. We've seen that approach alienate voters before with Dance You Off, which also received a poultry number of votes. Of course, that performance was executed well enough to get a high jury score, a grace that Olly sadly wasn't gifted. Meanwhile, Ireland's performance was expertly shot and choreographed but it was done so in a way that felt both intimate and like a theatrical stage spectacular. I think those wanting to stage future ESC songs could deffo use these two songs as excellent case studies of what the best approach is. And since I know someone's gonna say it: yes, Sweden's performance this year was also very Dance You Off but they had clearly learned from that song and brought the audience in far earlier so it still felt like a live performance.
I think it helped that Bambie had been studying theatre before starting their music career so they knew what they were doing and it payed off amazingly. I'm so obsessed with both the song and performance, I think it was the most unique eurovision performance ever.
Matt has always said that Benjamin Ingrosso wasn't a great vocalist either which explains a lot. It's been pointed out Markus and Martinus learnt from Dance You Off and opened out the stage.
Croatia and Ukraine are winners also because they were the only countries to not give any points, both in the jury and televote, to that one country. ✨✨
Thank you for your kind words, you have no idea how much it helps. I had a long talk with my niece about it, and I must say, I feal a lot better now, also because Joost and friends have posted some video's on insta and tiktok, I can tell he is picking up his life again, and being a goofy youngman having fun. And that's all I want. Sweet revenge seeing his music getting even more popular then it already was. ❤️💙❤️💙❤️💙
This is gonna sound real mushy of me, but for me Danny Estrin is a winner too, because no matter all the struggles he’s had since September, he was able to tick off a bucket list moment and announce the Australian 12 points for something he loves (and his cancer’s shrinking 😭😭)
For your iceberg you need to talk about the last performer curse. This curse existed last year when the last performer for last year's Eurovision, Mae Muller who represents United Kingdom finished second to last with 24 points. The same story happened with Austria and Kaleen who performed last in this year's Eurovision and finished (you guessed it) second to last with 24 points.
I think We Will Rave got overshadowed by stronger songs with the same vibe unfortunately. Mae Muller absolutely murdered the vocals on Instead I wrote a song though
RAJC talks about this on his channel but generally the performer on last tends not to do well. The way he puts it - people have generally made up their mind by the closer and I think fatigue sets in. You tend to get strong acts in the 20s too. The Common Linnets on in slot 24 effectively nerfed the last two countries after them in Copenhagen and I think Italy in the same slot would do the same to San Marino in 21. The exceptions to the rule are both the times Italy closed in 15 and 18 and Armenia with Lovewave in 16. Lauteur to some extent for Moldova to some extent in Baku too but that was a completely randomly drawn running order and it didn't really work.
Kaleen had an interestic nostalgic song, and a powerful staging but she was just not very strong singer live. Her vocal performance was not stellar. I am not surprised audience didnt reward her. Mae Muller is a better singer than Kaleen but her song was a bit generic and just not a hit ( outside of the UK)
Il Volo performed last in 2015 and not only won the televote, but they got the highest televote score percentage-wise at the time (now they're third behind Kalush Orchestra and Kaarija). You just have to have good vocals
Let's have a look at the last performers from the past five contests before 2024 to see if there is a pattern: The last performer in 2018 was Italy, who finished 5th. In 2019 it was Spain, who came 22nd. San Marino also finished 22nd in 2021. Estonia was 13th in 2022. And finally, the UK got second to last place (25th) last year. So, including Austria, four out of six countries got a bad result, one country finished mid table and only one was very successful. So maybe it is not exactly a curse, but definitely a tough spot to perform in. Kind of similar as going first actually.
Congrats on getting to 11k and hard agree on [ 7:47 ]. I never followed the behind-the-scenes before - I don't even want to hear the songs before the semifinals - but on Friday I was frantically refreshing Twitter to find out what the hell was going on, and besides Aran Bade (the journalist for RTL) the fan media were critical in dispelling the rumours.
Sorry ive got to rant somewhere. Is anyone else profoundly depressed that Mocroocoil has signed up as a sponsor again and kinda terrified we'll get the same shit we had this year next year too with possibly even worse results. I mean i know Israel's doing worse shit outside of the contest and getting away with it but this was one my refuges from that and its now being shut down. Its so depressing that like FIFA the EBU is being brought by a corrupt Middle Eastern government and at least with football you can't fiddle the final result.
When I watched Nemo's performance, I knew it was a winner. But there were really many fun and amazing songs and performances (Baby Lasagna made me bop alone in my room). Liked Gate (Norway) too! I love Eurovision because I discover a variety of genres and artists. I think US musicians have too much hegemony in the global scene. Thanks for the reporting! Love from Asia!
Another clear winner for me were the national languages being heavily represented this year. My personal ranking chart includes a mandatory +1 for songs performed in a native language, and this year, I was very happy to see that most entries got their extra point. This hadn't happened in a veeery long time.
As for Martin Osterdahl, if his head does roll, it won't be now. It'll be closer to the fall and in a quiet fashion with some likely asinine excuse. The EBU we've seen under his leadership in particular is certainly not willing to just budge and say "we're in the wrong." So Osterdahl will either brazenly cling to his post or leave in such a way so as to not take any blame.
Why would his head roll? The production was great and viewership was up. So what if some hardcore fans staged a failed boycott and are bitter about their fan-bubble fave getting disqualified… that’s but noise.
@k.j.hulander2204 Israeli there? He butchered the disqualification, which may well be on flimsy ground, and did NOTHING while the Israeli delegation brazenly harassed multiple people. He was spineless and you can bet national broadcasters will have complained about him a LOT.
@@k.j.hulander2204: ...because he allowed a country to participate which is bombing their neighbour, the Iranian consulate in Syria, Iranian soil and currently clocks Spain from sending aid. This country then send a delegation which harassed multiple artists who performed at Eurovision, had a TV commentator attack one of the artists and tried to cheat by paying right-wing politicians in multiple countries to "show their support for Eden this year" even though they have never ever cared about Eurovision. Martin Österdahl then disqualified one contestant who was harassed for speaking up instead of the harasser, and had an editing team sound proofing the booed performance in order to make it seem better than how it was really perceived.
There are a lot of immature and ignorant comments here and in this video that shows that nobody of you have a real clue how things work and spreads false information and that is really pathetic
I would also call Nutsa Buzaladze a winner. Georgia was another country that struggled to qualify for years, so to see her get through with Firefighter, especially while coping with a big tragedy in her personal life, was very inspiring. I look forward to seeing what the country will submit in the future ❤
You are definitely a winner this year! Your channel has been one of the biggest highlights of the season! Your videos are so high quality and unique to other ESC content creators! I will be subscribed for life ❤
Man as an American this is crazy. I always thought of Eurovision as nice and cool where everyone got along. Not a horrible group of Bias, politics, and bureaucracy.
Joost told in a Dutch interview that despite the success, he had a massive black period and a kind of burn out after everything that happened. Not knowing if they would prosecute him or not, did a lot to his wellbeing..... At the end, there was no evidence and the case was closed.... what did they do to a young man with nothing but a big dream.
That _Sweden_ placed _highest_ of all the Nordics (+ Estonia) was a bloody crime! The dullest, most boring-ass pop song with as much grit and artistic merit as unflavoured yoghurt, should not have passed the semis, let alone finish as *number god-damn NINE* on the final score board! A travesty!
As a swede I agree. I just want Sweden to send something interesting, rap music, epa-dunk, heavy metal, ANY other genre than radio friendly pop, pleeease!
@@perjusG:son wrote both Euphoria & Tattoo, which won the Eurovision. Deb’s were part of Heroes, which also won Eurovision 🫠 Loser mentality to throw away a winning concept. That's what you do when things aren't going well and you need changes. Thörnfeldt wrote Medina’s two songs in Mello & also the rock band Smash Into Pieces' two entry’s in Mello. If you look at their average of all the songs they've ever created in Eurovision, it's below the top 10. There aren't many producers/songwriters you can find with that stats. Sweden has understood the competition and therefore we do it well. Even though it may be perceived as "boring & same". Similarly, we have understood pop music, which has made us a global power house & most successful when it comes to the category of most streamed genre. Even if it is "boring & same". Personally, I’d never teach Germans how to win championships in football. Considering our own national team is crap (men's) and Germany has won many championships. I’d probably ask what they do so well that we don’t. But maybe it's just us 😅
can i add the nonbinary community as a winner? we had two openly nb participants in a year and one of them won with a song about embracing their nb identity! sure, both nemo and bambie are getting misgendered left and right and people are saying terrible things about both of them, but at the end of the day, i never could've even dreamed of having two nb people in the top 6. it made me feel like i finally have a voice 💛🤍💜🖤
Also, the EBU forbidding a lot of flags including the non binary one, with Nemo secretly smugling it to show it proudly in many moments was a brave moment
I feel like Bambie deserved to win more with their heart of steel, great staging and engaging song with vocals worthy of putting Ireland back in the top ten!
It would be more likely that the Dutch delegation threatened to completely pull back from Eurovision. We know they talked about that, they said there were some internal decisions but were contractually obligated to broadcast the competition.
I assume someone in the graphics team was told to mock up a bunch of possible outcomes and this was one of them. Because realistically, you'd want every option on standby so you aren't scrabbling at the last minute. Much easier to have them and not need them. I think avrotros would be even more furious if they'd been excluded from voting too tbh.
i think Portugal deserved a mention. it's an underrated country in general but this year especially, i felt like a lot of people were paying them dust. most didn't even believe they would qualify to the finals, let alone a top 10
I really like Norway's song, but the staging lost a lot on TV. It looked amazing in the arena, but the camera shots didn't pick up any of the lighting or effects well. There were some decisions made in how the performance was shot that let them down imo
As a proud Eurovision nerd who has been watching this show since the 80-s I can say that this booing has never happened. With so many of my fellow nerds being angry in a song contest that everyone watches just to have a good time says it ALL about this year. Excellent video, meow from Croatia ;).
I totally agree with you about Ireland's perfermance. I don't typically even like screaming music, but the stageing and everything was so interesting that I've still been watching it every once and a while. Especially after I saw their performance on Eurosong. The vocals, staging and everything improved so much that it felt like a completely different song. For me, this is one of those eurovision performances that I'm not going to listen on Spotify but wacht the performance again here time and time again like Serbia's Luke Black's.
I really liked Dons song and was so happy and surprised it got through! I think he performed well. I also loved Germany. His voice is excellent. They are both in regular rotation in my playlist! I think most of the songs were of a higher standard overall this year compared to last (the top five were all absolutely excellent, especially Nemo!), but the whole show was better last year, especially the interval and opening acts. The way they interwove Ukraine into the whole show was just sensational!! And it's not just because of all the controversy this year, Liverpool just put on a better and more heartfelt show
the funny thing about the comment relating to Sweden not sending a song in Swedish anytime soon, is the fact that songs performing in Swedish in Melfest have gotten more and more popular, and there is a prominent talking point the past few years about a growing interest in represeting our language on the Eurovision stage. Medina (who came second in Melfest 2024) were also very vocal that they would have performed their song in Swedish even in eurovision
It's deeply unhelpful to disparage Olly's future career prospects based on his Eurovision result. One song on one night didn't resonate with the public - so what? That isn't a career killer for someone of his stature.
I'd love to hear your thoughts in a future video about the shows themselves this year from SVT - Petra & Malin as hosts/the underwhelming intervals acts
You have made great points about EBU and the future. There needs to be a huge change, because this year's position of the EBU is completely untenable and it is not grounds for moving forward.
As a Dane myself, I agree that we seriously need to do something with our selection competition and take some risks if we wanna qualify for the final again.
It's not like we Germans don't want to send cool stuff. Even in 2022 we fans signed a petition for Electric Callboy to get a wildcard and we failed. This year there was a huge buzz about Großstadtgeflüster and it turns out they didn't even apply. And now Electric Callboy don't want to come back (which is understandable) and a lot of cool bands will never apply, because our national final is a joke and if you don't win it all, you're losing something, mostly credibility. So in order to take some risks, we should be select internally for a while again, so the artists don't feel like they're set up to failure in the national final.
I must disagree about Isaak. I thought the song and his performance were actually great and it is one of the songs I keep playing after the show. He did great!
@@_sweetdreams For me the song is catchy but just radio friendly good, it's alone can't compete with all the other songs. Isaak's performance with his voice, his emotion put in it is what earned the high scores. And to think he done it with all the negative throwing at him when he won the national final is wild!
One of the losers this year is also the Swedish broadcaster. They really tried to make a lot of fun content. I actually enjoyed the local content of the semifinals, something I hardly ever do. The nostalgic performances were nice, the videos were very funny. The karaoke thing was funny too. In my eyes they did a fantastic job. All of which was overshadowed by the drama going on before and at the final.
11:00 as a norwegian i can confirm among pretty much everyone ive talked to about eurovision, the general stance is just "Welp... sure as shit not sending norwegian again" and variations of "Rework the jury system"
Indeed. I heard Stig Karlsen, the head of the norwegian delegation, some days ago say that it is already difficult to get musicians to attend to the contest. Esc does not have a strong standing in some part of the establishment.
@@heidiihlen8074 And that's a bummer. While Gåte didn't get the results they (and I) were hoping for and despite the EBU bringing the contest into disrepute, the band was welcomed by the community with open arms and is hopefully going to be rewarded with bigger crowds on their tour ahead. For artists, Eurovision can be an opportunity worth pursuing. In particular, it rewards you staying true to your artistry.
@@JorgyValenko Yes, I think (hope) you're right. And it is also my impression that the Esc community welcomed Gåtes contribution. The interesting part is the divide between that impression and what happened in the final. I guess we will never find out.🤔😊
You know what would be an awesome content? An analysis of the past contests. And I don't mean just the more receny ones, I mean the whole history. I know it's a tough ask, but it would be massively valuable for someone to compile the who lore of Eurovision as well as you do for these video.
A big win in my eyes is the stage/production of the show itself! Really liked how it was made and also....with that stage, the signs was there that Schwitzerland would win! :)
1:40 and do note that they were also running around the stage while singing, so Nemo being able to pull off those notes at the same time took real skill
Nemo’s win has sparked a huge conversation about the rights of nonbinary people in Switzerland and I am so happy about that because IT IS ABOUT DAMN TIME. In German there are only three pronouns: sie (she) , er (he) and es (it) which results in nonbinary people constantly being misgendered. Nemo’s win is getting everybody to talk about accepting nonbinary people and introducing a pronoun for them and I hope that they will have better rights in Switzerland very soon.
Many non-binary people also use dey/dem here in Germany, idk about Switzerland. Others, like me just stick to their assigned pronouns in German and use they/them in English (and whatever other other pronouns may be preferred ).
Oh please!! Not again with the pronouns!!! Just use a neutral one. Honestly!! This is tiresome!! Why do we have to invent a new language? This is honestly too much to bear!! I feel ashamed as a gay of this LGTBI+ agenda.
In the winners, or at least in the honourable mentions, I would have placed the Italian broadcaster RAI. It was immediately clear to everyone that those graphics "spoiling" the televote results couldn't have been a mistake, it took a bit longer to realise they were a warning of what was about to happen. Maybe Nemo would have won anyway, but that coalesced juries televote tells me otherwise so, whomever decided to make that reveal, saved this year Eurovision and probably Eurovision in general.
>>>>Maybe Nemo would have won anyway, but that coalesced juries televote tells me otherwise so, whomever decided to make that reveal, saved this year Eurovision and probably Eurovision in general.>>> Why do you say it saved Eurovision?
07:00 About Malmö losing out... recommendations actually went out to people working in Malmö to _not_ come into the office that week, and instead telecommute, something Sweden became very good at during the pandemic. Workplaces also relaxed the typical 3+2 rule for that week (which is typically not strictly enforced anyway) and so many commuters just did not come into town. And considering you pay 10 EUR and up for a lunch in Malmö, they took a hit there.
The problem with countries choosing an artist or band because they're well-established in their country and ONLY their country is that people from their home country cannot vote for them and almost nobody outside of their home country will know who they are so them being well-established means nothing. Eastern European countries sending artists that are well-established in THEIR REGION can pick up votes from neighbouring countries.
I'd like the UK to take a big risk next year - and have a song as bonkers as Finland's, and The Netherlands were this year. Also, imagine if the UK sent an entry for the ESC that WASN'T sung in English. How about something sung in Welsh??!? .....now that would be daring!
@@pyridonfaltis9761 ... whatever the result of this year - we NEED to change direction next year. Just be abit less British, or rather - remember how innovative we used to be as a nation, and come up with something radical and groundbreaking; like Ireland did, this year. No more stereotypes such as dancers in bowler hats, wearing pinstripe suits 🥱, or yet another 'non binary' artist more interested in saying they were non binary, than actually talking about their song. Come on UK - please up your game. Either have a great singer, or go the other way and be the most bonkers act of the night. But no one dressed up as a red phone box, or as a city gent - because this is boring. It's been done ad nauseum.....mostly during London 2012.
I agree , UK should send a song at least partially sung in another language, Welsh, Scots, Scottish Gaelic, Manx, Channel islands language.... Welsh is an obvious choice.
Yes! UK songs are always in English and even just once I'd like things to be different; I was talking to someone about this once a few years ago, and they didn't like the idea of a song in another language as it could be 'gimmicky'. What? And you're right about a bonkers song. We automatically qualify, so we should lean into that and have something really out there. What's the worst that could happen?
Unfortunately Electric Callboy won't come back ESC afaik. I know some of them and said that after German broadcaster treatment they've gotten = there is no way they will be willing to. Plus their schedules are seriously busy year in advance at least. :(
I am really upset and hurt by the way Theodor Andrei - D.G.T. was treated. 😢 He's such a good man, he has a great voice. He deserved to qualify. And Roxen - Amnesia, who was also from Romania, suffered from a similar situation. They both had great songs.
@@ar50000 and they put it into stupid shows no one watches, as well as some new public television channels (with folklore, regional news and sports) that no one watches
Likewise, and I´m from Czechia, one of the two countries that gave Ukraine 12 points. It had meaning, earnestness, gradation, vocal skills, visuals that were not too little and not too much. Very memorable song. This was my first year watching Eurovision (it´s not big here in Czechia; I was working at the world ice hockey championship we´re organizing this year, and it´s HUGE here). I´d always imagined good Eurovision songs like the Ukrainian one.
This is a great video and a very poignant analysis of Eurovision 2024. I thing the songs you highlighted were the top aspects for me. too. You come over vey passionate about Eurovision and the EBU really messed up (one cannot help feeling they were dancing to someone else's tune (sponsors) we need to get back Eastern European countries and make sure countries like San Marino remain. Thank you for this video.
A lot of national broadcasters are beholden to a strong pro-Israel bias, which would have throttled their ability to investigate and cover the scandals at ESC2024 in real time given how basically all of them were due to the behaviour of the Israeli delegation. That's why the fan media was so vital to covering what happened, because they were the only truly independent journalists present and it showed.
I am a little sad that the song contest is so little about songs nowadays. It is all about the show and presentation (not even talking about politics here!). Norway in the last position, Czech Republic didn't even qualify: Oh my, am I getting old?
Yes, I think this too. Is it becos with backing singers on stage, the songs in the past had more soul? Nowadays, with the backing tracks, you can't tell which bits are live and I am listening to the more recent songs less.
In the last few years I always felt quite good informed about the ESC, but this year was such a deep dive in Eurovision fan media, about Malmö, Joost Klein, Izrael... So I can confirm, that the media is a big winner :D
Dear ESC Gabe, thank you so much for the great coverage in this and all your other videos. Do you have any idea how big chances are that no changes will take place in the EBU at all? I have this nagging feeling they will just try to justify everything and blame things that have gone wrong on artists and perhaps even the public, rather than look at their own organisation ... I mean, the longer it takes, the more we will forget, right? Or the less upset we will become, at least.
ESC Gabe rules 👍🏻 & I’ve been longing after this vid. The last one was also sESCentional great, and a must-listen for EBU’s top brass, who failed on so many levels in Malmö. But soon it’s a new, hopefully better, edition in Switzerland 🇨🇭 Let’s see if they can break the codes better than 🇸🇪
Great video, but I have to disagree strongly with two points made. 1. Martin must go - Martin is not the head of the EBU, he is the face. The Executive Supervisor is there to make sure things run to plan, they audit, they don’t dictate. Removing Martin fixed nothing, the board are the ones who made the wrong decisions. 2. B&H must come back. The reasons B&H are excluded is because they defaulted on a payment plan. They owe the EBU money and giving them a way in by putting them on a payment plan like the one they defaulted on will not end well. I’d love them to return but they have to pay their debts first, I agree with the EBU on this (and basically nothing else).
My winner was Estonia, they had such a cool concept with their Talharpas combining rap with folk, it was the performance that immediately clicked with me. The fact that they only got 4 points or smth from the Jury votes... I mean I get it, they didnt have the best vocal range, but the most fun track imo,.. atleast they got me to buy their cd lol. By disqualifying the netherlands from the finals they just brought so much more attention to Europapa, that it's almost like the Barbara Streissand effect. In the end, I haven't watched the song contest in about 5 years, randomly watched a bit this year and just loved how much culture, language and most importantly great songs it brought! Let's hope they adress their mistakes next year, by implementing a better voting system with less weight on the jury votes and hopefully next year wont be even worse in terms of the EBU fn up.
Just a comment on Olly's performance and result. I think it's hard not to have sympathy for him on a purely personal basis for 0 points from the televote. Nobody deserves that to happen but unfortunately with the voting system (whereby you have to be in the Top 10 of a country's televote) it is always a possibility. The reality of this is down to the vocal performance but it's also a function of the staging which put him under too much pressure from a vocal perspective. It reminded me of Lesley Roy in 2021, another person who doesn't have the strongest vocals and who then had to sing while running around on treadmills, or even Luna from this year who was saddled with a staging that put her vocals under too much pressure with much the same result. At some point during the season it should have become obvious this was an issue and alterations should have been made to the staging. The staging itself was probably a little too divisive but if Olly had been nailing the vocals I think that would have been overlooked as was the case with Bambie who also had a quite divisive staging but had the stregnth of vocal and performance ability to make it work. Bottom line - the UK need to ensure that next year at the fundamental level they get a strong live vocalists and build up the rest from there.
Prediction: Norway is never gonna change. They've finished last with some unique and bizarre songs since the 1960's and nothing seems to have deterred them from sending something completely out there the next year all over again for more than half a century now.

For Ireland, people really need to be mentioning Sergio Jaen more, the 22 year-old staging director. The strength of the performance isn't the song itself - it's how they told the story onstage. I anticipate Sergio will be booked and busy for the next several decades.
Agreed. And the camera crew too.

22? That's a baby!
They were *22*???? Holy cow, that's talent ahead of their age by far.

Here in the Czech Republic we are sorry for the former head of our delegation. They do not represent us!
Yeah, I am actually happy that he is the former head, even though I used to like our previous attempts on ESC 😂 Gabe is the most accurate and respectful ESC journalist, so calling him out in the video about bullying is so random and hilarious 😂
From Czechia, too, I totally concur! We´re sorry!
Yeah, that made me ashamed of my country yet again... and I don't even know who that guy is 😳
Loved the Czech song. Maybe wrong competition for a grat tune!
Joost being kicked out only enhanced his rock star persona
Angelina Mango is great, i predict she will have a great career in Italy
@@pyridonfaltis9761 yup, the San Remo hosts insisted on that. It felt they treated her as a winner from the start.
As a norwegian i have to say our last place was a massive shock to us
I was straight up flabbergasted
Yeah, and from Czechia, you absolutely didn´t deserve that.
It was a good song it didn't deserve last place
You should have sent Milo: modern, catchy and great staging. Or Judge Tenderly of Me: a beautiful ballad. Even the robot one would have been fun.
The song was really brilliant. I think Ireland was in your same waters. 😢 nonetheless, I loved it!

This is gonna sound real mushy of me, but for me Danny Estrin is a winner too, because no matter all the struggles he’s had since September, he was able to tick off a bucket list moment and announce the Australian 12 points for something he loves (and his cancer’s shrinking 😭😭)
that's such a sweet thought :')
I'm immensely glad he's still with us. He seems a great guy and I loved Voyager last year.

It's not music that's the division.

Martin Österdahl then disqualified one contestant who was harassed for speaking up instead of the harasser, and had an editing team sound proofing the booed performance in order to make it seem better than how it was really perceived.

I refuse to believe they ever considered excluding Netherlands from the voting. It must have been a misunderstanding with the graphics people.

Another Luke Black fan! His performance was one of my favourites last year!
EBU needs to change. Probably new rules are needed.
As a Dane myself, I agree that we seriously need to do something with our selection competition and take some risks if we wanna qualify for the final again.
As a German I can assure Isaak in 12th place felt like a win. 🥹

Cheers for your wonderful work this Eurovision season! Looking forward to future uploads!
👏👏
I must disagree about Isaak. I thought the song and his performance were actually great and it is one of the songs I keep playing after the show. He did great!
@@_sweetdreams For me the song is catchy but just radio friendly good, it's alone can't compete with all the other songs.

Gåte was invited to participate in MGP. Which highly profiled Norwegian artist will accept an invite after this?
How will it work with the cases?
It doesnt fall under rights at all
Oh please!! Not again with the pronouns!!! Just use a neutral one. Honestly!! This is tiresome!! Why do we have to invent a new language? This is honestly too much to bear!! I feel ashamed as a gay of this LGTBI+ agenda.
@@FQuintanaMarrero language evolves, it always did, it is normal.
11:29 we in Sweden were so close to send a song with swedish and two other languages
The Eurovision fans are the losers here. We’ve lost our beloved song festival to geopolitical machinations.
At this point Eurovision is just like the Olympics now.
By this point, I personally think that you and Overthinking It are the best Eurovision- related channels on TH-cam.
@@julinonabecause if the genocidal ethnostate hosted Eurovision, I am fairly sure that a lot of artists and journalists would not have come.

Aren't you tired of lying?
Finland's risk did not pay off though. Olly still finished above Finland, even with 0 votes from the public.
From Czechia, I would love that! A male Welsh singer with a powerful trained voice like they have in their choirs... that would be wonderful!
Thank you for your service, Gabe

Unfortunately Electric Callboy won't come back ESC afaik. I know some of them and said that after German broadcaster treatment they've gotten = there is no way they will be willing to. Plus their schedules are seriously busy year in advance at least. :(
Knowing NDR, they would only send Electric Callboy once everyone is tired of party metal, leading to a result like Norway this year...
@@xyldkefyi firstly the band needs to be willing to go. And they are not anymore.
Winners - Romania a country whose gross treatment of Theodor last year was so bad they had to take a year off
I still listen D. G. T., by the way :)
I am really upset and hurt by the way Theodor Andrei - D.G.T. was treated. 😢 He's such a good man, he has a great voice. He deserved to qualify. And Roxen - Amnesia, who was also from Romania, suffered from a similar situation. They both had great songs.
Hopefully they saved some money this year.
@@ar50000 and they put it into stupid shows no one watches, as well as some new public television channels (with folklore, regional news and sports) that no one watches
I really like to listen eurovision songs in native languages.
Me too. I love that Songvakeppnin requires every artist to create an Icelandic version of their song.
man you‘re a great content creator
I'm down for that Baby Lasagna video! Let us know if you do it Gabe😊
Excited to hear you'll keep making videos this off-season
funny I loved both Germany and Latvia's entries
i LOVE ISAAK's voice so much and Hollow is amazing i still stream both to this day
Thank you for being here, Gabe 💙 Your work is appreciated 🥰
My winner was Ukraine, I think they hit the most boxes this year; and the song was incredibly deep
Ditto ❤
You're the best ESC channel I found! I love the way you explain things. I'm just sad I didn't discover you sooner.
Gåte❤❤❤ I also thought this would do very good😔 I really loved this song and performance
I think Norway coming last is because Ireland and Croatia vacuumed up all the votes of people most likely to vote for Ulveham, sadly.
But that does not explain why they barely scraped through the semi final (Croatia and Ireland was not competing in the second semi).
Europapa now at 85M streams... over all platforms 240M streams
But executives don't audit, they have decision-making and implementing powers.
Great report 🙌
Let’s face it - the biggest loser is Jan Bors.
Scandinavian languages in eurovision doesn't seem to be taken seriously. It's a shame.
Participant democracy needed huge improvement too. Silencing of artists is not on, particularly when certain countries still get to participate
Prediction: Norway is never gonna change. They've finished last with some unique and bizarre songs since the 1960's and nothing seems to have deterred them from sending something completely out there the next year all over again for more than half a century now.
