    How many times have you grabbed your bottle of honey only to find it had started to crystallize? Well, this video show how I go about decrystallizing a 5 gallon bucket of it. The process works the same if you just have a bottle of it, it just takes a heck of a lot less time to do it. Thanks for watching. God's peace and Merry Christmas.

    Nice! May I give you an advice or tip? Try to use a metal container or something else that hangs inside the hot water (not makes direct contact with the heat from below). It will one make it easier to warm the honey. Plastic doesnt transfers the heat so good. But second the plastic tends to give some of it plastic away at the higher temperatures. So with using the metal it keeps its own taste even more. I really enjoy watching the vids. Keep making em them. I really like them and I learn alot and even considering to search for a place where I can get some experience myself.

      That is a great idea, but I have taken it a bit further. I bought a water jacketed bottler, and now, when I have crystallized honey, it will be dumped into the tank and I let it alone. It may take a few days to get it to go liquid, but I am in no rush. Thanks so much for the help and watching my channel. God's peace. Mr. Ed

    • @KenHill

      Indeed, a jacketed bottling tank is the way to go. If you're a backyard, beekeeper like myself, I use a very large canning kettle as my heating bath and insert my 5 gallon buckets into it with some chunks of wood on the bottom to keep the plastic bucket from contacting the very bottom, where the heating element is on my electric stove, just in case. It may take a while but I've got all kinds of time and if you have the heat somewhat low you can leave it on all night and perhaps wake up to completely heated and liquefied honey in the morning.

      @KenHill I'm just watching a vid from two months ago from Mr Ed. Where he is rendering beeswax and is explaining the story of the kettles and then you wrote this. What a coincidence, that video from recycling the beeswax is a really good one to have a look at. ( recycling our beeswax)

    • @KenHill
      @KenHill 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sebrassino I probably watched everything available on rendering wax. There are lots of different ways, and a lot of it depends upon the scale of what you need to accomplish and what tools and facilities you have available. For the five or six pounds of finished/rendered beeswax I get every year or two, I usually start with hot water in a dedicated kettle to melt and settle everything. I let it cool overnight and dump it out just like Mr. Ed does and wash and scrape the cake a bit. From there I melt in a double boiler at least twice, taking my time about it and run it through mesh strainers and scrape till I'm satisfied with the product. Have fun!
      Speaking of lots of different ways of doing things.......... There's an old beekeeper's adage that I've heard and that is ' ask five different beekeepers the same question and you'll get at least six different answers.'

    I will have to send pitchers of my decrystallizing box I built. Its uses two 60 watt lights (need to add a third light) and a old hot water heater temp controller. I set it between 100 to 105 and stick the whole bucket in or a 3 or 4 case of honey. The only problem is it takes a few days. Nice looking honey.

    Mr. Ed, wonderful videos! I think in the future you can skip the step of measuring the water temperature. When it's boiling you are pretty much 212 degrees if you are close to sea level.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So glad you like the videos, and thanks so much for taking your time to watch them. Even though the water is hard boiling, the thickness of the crystallized honey will not allow the honey itself to reach that temperature. It requires a lot of stirring and a constant monitoring of the temp to get the honey to return to it's liquid state. I only use this method when I have honey in 5 gallon pails, but I will be using a different method in our 55 gallon drums. Stay tuned for that video. God's peace.

    If you sell raw and unfiltered honey you should not heat the honey above 121 degrees Fahrenheit to maintain all of its health benefits. I use 150 degree water and take the honey to around 118 degrees. Keeps all of it good properties that way.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I really don't like putting any heat to the honey, but when it crystalizes you really don't have a choice. I really tried to maintain those numbers and I was very close to them. As you could tell, the thermometer was not a really good one, so I think I did ok. At least the honey did not lose any color and was still golden. I really appreciate your comment, I have found so many different opinions on heated honey, and yours are ones that I have read and agree with. Thanks for watching. Merry Christmas. Mr. Ed

      @bear09871 Chemistry doesn't work in absolutes. Honeys enzymes have a half life of roughly 1000 days @69F and only a few min @ 121F... Anywhere north of 95F you start degrading or killing the benefits. Once It is crystalized the health benefits are pretty much void unfortunately , there isn't a way to get It uncrystallized in a preserving manner, just avoiding hitting 121F is by no means preserving all of it , you are still killing a large portion. I would be interest to see if any living enzymes are left in crystalized honey before you heat it, there is a good chance there is none...

      @@George-nx5lo i have a crystallized pail of honey and am going to make mead. your comment made me wonder, if i de crystallize it, could that affect the quality of the mead, or is it simply the sugar content the yeast needs, not the healthy enzymes, etc that honey provides?

Long story short with that, you take a small bit of crystallized honey and put it in liquid honey, and leave it alone. It seems to work best when the temps are cool, but not cold.

If it crystallizes, put it in water, turn the heat on, bring the water to a low boil, turn the heat off, and let the jar sit till the honey returns to it original state. That's what I do. I only do not like that the honey is in a plastic bucket... the plastic melts. And he chemicals that are in the plastic get into the honey. Not only that they make the honey taste bad it also is not good for your health. You don't even need to heat the plastic up to get the chemicals into the honey. Just storing honey in plastic containers are bad. What happend to the good old glas containers? Glas is perfect for honey!

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are no leaching of chemicals in the honey as all the buckets are food grade. When I bottle the honey, I do put it in glass bottles because I prefer glass to plastic.
