Short flight in my Zenith CH701 Stol

  • Few weeks ago I did a similar video with the camera on the left strut. This is virtually the same flight from in the airplane with some narration. I'm not the best pilot in the world so someone with better skills could get a lot more from the airplane but this video is fairly interesting. In the segment where I talk about roll rate pay attention to stick movement and how fast it rolls from about 50 degrees bank back to about 50 or 60 degrees the other way. I didn't time it but you can certainly see it's a crisp airplane to fly.

This was GREAT! I really appreciated the camera's perspective from behind you, inside the plane. It gave me a true sense of how the flight looked and felt to YOU. I discovered Zenith Air and its STOL designs more than 20 years ago and have always wanted to build and fly one. There never seemed to be time. I'm now 71, with serious lumbar-spine problems, so it's too late for me. That made your willingness to share and narrate your flight even more special for me. Please accept my sincere gratitude.

Thanks so much for the great flight! I have a friend that has a CH701 and while I've never flown with in it I am very fascinated by the plane. I'm a 2500 hour 40 year pilot and I fly a Cessna Hawk XP but the LSA world looks like a whole lot more fun. Again, this was a great flight and you certainly have your plane dialed in and fly it perfectly. Even that second to the last landing you didn't like was really nice with the bumps you had. Thanks so much for the fabulous video. Wish I could fly like you again.
    Best regards,
    Lisa

Wayne, I recently got the bug for Zenith STOL flying after retiring from the airlines back in 2009. Well, I came upon your video right off, but just now am coming back (after maybe '200 videos viewed') to say ... You, my Friend, did one helluva job with this 'Demo'. Seriously listen to what all these guys are telling you, because it's obvious you don't take yourself 'too serious' ... but you need to feel very Proud of the work you did with this. Wayne .. you are truly the "Chuck Yeager" of Sport STOL flying ! .. Bravo my Friend !!

Hail and good morrow from Central Wyoming!
Like some of the others here I wanted to thank you so very much, for taking the time to actually go through what the average pilot would like to see before the flight for this aircraft: going through the specific checklist for this aircraft, and doing the actual tests and confirmations that are so necessary to safe flight!
The simple but oh so important tasks are key to knowing about this specific model of aircraft, and I do appreciate you including it, as well as your running commentary on why you are doing what you are doing!
Further, allow me to commend you for your choice of music!!!
You have no idea how very tired I am of crap, AKA rap, AKA boom boom boom bass, no lyrics, or screaming at the top of their lungs lyrics to where no one can understand what they're saying, and that is if one can stand listening to the noise that they refer to as music!
I like hearing the music that I used to hear on the radio in the top 10, back in the day when I was in high school!
I'm thinking about the 7:50, but I do love the tandem setup of the 701, but I need at least 500 useful load pounds, and would prefer 600 to 700!
I'm your standard porker at 280 lb, so when you add in fuel much less another person, there isn't much room left!
Take care and I look forward to seeing more videos from you!

      @rclaggf4u  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Glad you enjoyed the video. I had many requests from folks asking how the 701 flew so I figured Id just take them along for the ride. Hopefully we will get a few more up later this year, this thing called work and weather keeps getting in the way.

So that's the way to properly land on a short runway ! :O
I've been flying only on simulators by far, and was good in smooth landing, but never even tried to land like that this kind of aircraft - stalling just before the touch down :O
I've been doing it on military jets but it was much more challenging I think, as in many cases pulling back on the stick was causing the craft to climb up again and stall to crash if that was a heavy thing like a A-10 Warthog ^^'
Hopefully at fairly low speeds it's much easier to match the right touch down speed to just stick to the ground.

excellent video thanks for making it. Great job of explanation of what it is like to fly a 701 out of a tight grass strip. I would like to know how you connected the audio in to the go pro from your intercom.

I used a video camera for awhile and bought a patch cord from Aircraft Spruce that hooked into the intercom. It was always a hassle and I always had audio or video issues. With the go pro I use a mic kit sold at best buy and I place the mic in the headset by my ear, thats it. Not all Go pro cameras have the provision for the external mic, mine is a hero 4 black. It beats anything I have EVER used. Also the go pro has to have a powered mic, the one I bought has a little LR44 battery in it and works great.

Great flight and video! What is that telling you terrain ahead and to pull up? Love this plane!

The Garmin 496. It has several audio warning outputs and that’s where the XM music comes from as well as the XM nexrad Weather. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Glad you enjoyed the videos. I use Aviasport, they have the proper range markings and use the factory Rotax senders so you don't have to buy those.
