One tip that should be noted. Painting a door in full sun even if its flat can leave brush marks, as the paint will start set before it has a chance to flow out. If you must, keep the door in a shaded spot until ready to start painting.
I always use brush for trim & divots and roller for the flat work always turns out nice. Recently I sprayed all my 8 exterior doors with an airless & came out awesome
lol hit the door with a 3/4 roller for a smooth finish the cutting is good and well used brush but a roller will be a smoother outcome for a great finish
Thank you for sharing!!! Nice, easy and to the point directions. So many helpful tips!!! Best video that I have watched on painting exterior front door!!! Rain-X works like a charm for sloppy painters like myself. Haha
I have a door like that but the window grids are between the glass. I'm painting the door red but wondering if I should paint the outer window trim red, also, even though the grids have to stay white?
Great video! Yes your right paint the half moon first! It’s all about the prep! Many tips on how to paint a door properly! Very good paint brush, paint and floetrol additive! Check out this new innovative tool called the Richard gooseneck flexible paint extension! Absolutely incredible! Cheers!
I forgot to mention....consider getting your jamb cladded with aluminum and caulked to the brick or siding....from a professional...it will make the project look GREAT!!
I have to paint my front interior metal door again. It's already store bought white so this is the first time I would do it. Would I need to sand it all first? And would I need primer or a top coat if I'm just painting it white again? The paint I got already has primer but I doubt I even need it, at least not a separate primer in addition to the one already in the paint. It's semigloss exterior paint so I probably won't need some sort of top coat. Didn't purchase Floetrol or anything either. Not sure how I'd even use it or if necessary.
It's a lot easier with no paint on the brush.--If it's a warm day, I wouldn't do all the panels until I've done the rails and stiles up to them, so that the paint can still be feathered in.--If the door is a different color than the interior trim (assuming like most doors it opens in) you want to paint the hinge side the door color and the knob side the interior trim color.-Also, I,m still a believer in oil-base for doors and trim- using Penetrol.
Thanks Chris Adrian for your questions. Yes, priming is a must to make sure the topcoat will adhere. Scrape any loose paint (wear a respirator) and sand down any rusty areas before priming. You can hand sand or use a random orbital sander (set on a low setting then move up to aggressive based on needs). Hope this helps.
IMHO. Paint lines will be seen. Airless spray painting (rent or buy) is the ONLY way to go. The front door is THE most visible thing someone sees as they approach your house. Why skimp?
Why use such a small detail brush instead of a small roller ?...Save the little brush for the window mullion.....A 6 inch roller would leave a smooth even texture.....Every time....

Do you think it leaves a better finish? Do you typically use foam rollers to leave the best finish when rolling?
You said you were going to show how to PREP and paint. Where's the prep part?

I like how this explains WHY you should do something.

i make sure i get a little paint on the windows because sometimes corners are missed, and its easy to scraoe off.
Always great home improvement videos. The door looks amazing. Thank you for the tips!
what kind of paint did I need to buy for painting the front door
It would have been nice to see how to prep the door for painting. The painting steps were good though. Thanks.
thank you, a light sanding and cleaning the door will help with primer/paint application
Thumbs up for Your work. I could also recommend a pretty good door brand - Dako. They work in US and EU and make some good stuff.

Thank you for sharing this video.
Would a foam roller do a good job as well??
What kind a paint did you used, oil or water base.?????

Glad to help Justin Abar :D

What about prep work (sanding, scraping, priming, rust removal for steel doors)?

Should the door be primed first?

thanks for tips but cant barely see the paint color your using
Geffrey Theriault sorry about that, it was sunny that day and the paint blended in with the primer :(
He’s using water 😂
Sooo, you don't think anyone will see the lock side door edge ?
I'm sorry I think I missed the most important thing. Do you paint the exterior including the edges or you just paint the front.
What kind of brush did you mention? It was hard to hear at that point in the video.
jmw
Jean White it was a Purdy XL 2, you can find the complete supply list here

Foam roller is the best
+cwrowe they are great
I would only paint a vertical door, as I have been trained.

+Jimmy jim jim totally understand, probably didn't have a roller at the time of the video. Always a time crunch :D
all you have to do is scrap it with a razor slowly and was window down with Windex clear.
Thanks for the extra tip ;)
did you really just painted a white door white?
+Markus Kaser no, it's actually a different color, lol. Although it does look white in the video :D
Why paint white door white? Better to give it some new color.
It’s a cream color
OK, sorry. Priming was mentioned, but a demonstration for we "intellectually challenged" viewer(s) (Me) will be helpful.
+Chris Adrian I'd just prime the door in the same fashion
how very strange.
Nice accent
Nice Tutorial, Ugly Color 👍
