Online sources will tell you the following: A good scrub with a 50:50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water will do the job. Isopropyl alcohol and denatured alcohol can be alternated in some applications. Both can be used as cleaning agents, and as solvents in a variety of industries.
I'm assuming you're using latex paint. I have used latex to paint the exterior side of a steel door and left it open for 8 hours in the summer heat and that door will always stick to the weather stripping..Got a solution for that scenario?
First off, do yourself a huge favor and leave that weatherstripping off for 24-48 hrs after painting. Go with a high quality product, I have used Sherwin Williams Emerald Trim line, which is excellent for Trim, but on exterior doors it does have an extended cure time, which means it needs about a week to completely set up. In the meantime, it can tend to be soft, which is not so ideal for a door, like you mentioned, that comes in immediate direct contact with weatherstripping. So try S-W Latitude, which will cure faster than a urethane, or Benjamin Moore’s Advanced Exterior.

I missed what kind of paint to use on the outside of the door.
Semi gloss exterior paint. We recommend Benjamin Moore’s Moore Glow.

It's optional. One can either brush all those edges in each section of a raised-panel door, or run the edge of a mini roller on those.

Can i try to keep door knobs on?
Sure; you just might not have as professional of a finish if brush marks are visible around the knobs.
