I've played magic axes for years, but I dont have the brain capacity still to think about coordinating all my fingers in such a way. Its truly staggering.
@@danielheitzhausen6485 He's gotta Coodercaster setup going here, and I think he's using the bridge pup - a Supro or Tiesco Lapsteel pickup. Sustain and density like nothing else out there
I want to see a Blake Mills/Joey Landreth/Julian Lage tour. +6 years edit: with Madison Cunningham and Luke Enyeart, like a whole melodic guitar festival please and thanks
Wow. In one song, he's strumming, palm muting, plucking including separate bottom for bass and muting it, sliding with a slide and fingers, bends, vibrato, pulling out single notes and chords, changing volume with his pinkie, singing (with emotion), and at one point even slides up and grabs a cheeky harmonic 1:05. Truly amazing skill and what a result, awesome song 🤘
That swampy ass, dirty Fender tube tone! Love that tube tremelo too, sputtering and spitting at all the right moments...badass! Great song and a super talent.
I've been watching this performance regularly for the last 4 years. Still as stunned, shocked and in love as I was the first time watching it. I'm not a religious person, but this gets as close to being a religious ceremony as I can imagine.
I don't typically care for blues much, but goddamn that guitar sound. I respect artists who don't just follow the same boring, beaten path for something. The tuning, the pickup choice, the strat/tele hybrid... good shit.
IndicacannaJones Yeah, as the other poster recommended, Ry Cooder is the fuckin man! One of Blake Mills' biggest influences actually, and it can be heard all over this performance in both style and tone (intro and then starting at 3:45 mark especially). Some of the most dynamic, soulful, haunting, and rhythmic slide/guitar playing you'll hear.
Not many things can cause me to be speechless, but this is one of those things. This thing is a thing that things dream of being things of. This thing has reached thing Nirvana. Thing.
'Bout time he got some "mainstream" (i.e., corporate?) recognition! Every guitar-playing corner of the galaxy should be talking about this guy! You can all go home now, shredders. Blake Mills wins.
Music doesn't have to be a contest, both Blues and metal can exist without one side winning or losing. That attitude is closeminded, and is what leads to a genre becoming stale
Since finding it 3-4 weeks ago, I've listened to it more times than any of my faves like Zeppelin, ACDC, Floyd, etc etc. I've been addicted to songs in the past but I can't stop with this one. The notes he plays are just incredible.
true and sad in many ways, but a lot of really important people saw it and their exposure weighs heavier than the masses of light weights. It's an absolute timeless banger of a performance.
This particular performance of this song is so on fire. This recording should be preserved amongst the greatest works of this genre for eternity. Floors me every time.
Just found this after discovering Blake through all the tracks he's has recently released with Pino, I am simultaneously very confused and extremely impressed.
@@AlsacousticsI wish it was me, but it ain’t! Search TH-cam for The Cinder Cone, there’s this guy who lives in a legit tree house and has a skate bowl on his property. Dude is living the dream
Jesus. Each time he plays a song he does something new. Such creativity and brilliance. I am in awe. Looking forward to hearing what this true artist will do next. Can't wait to see and hear him again in Chicago. Wow.
I constantly come back to watch this astounding video. I always see the same comments at the top. I'd just like to put myself on this board. Blake is virtuoistic and is an inspiration to every musician whether they know it or not yet!!!!
This song means so much to me for reasons I cannot talk about it. This versions is mindblowing and the 'chops' send chills down my spine every single time
I come back for a hit of this song nearly daily. The singing and lyrics are pretty good, but it's the killer guitar tone and playing that keeps me coming back for more. The intro and guitar solo in particular are just so great.
Cant believe this vid hasnt gone mainstream popular in a society that’s in desperate need for originality and talent like this..there’s only 310k views on this so far and i think I alone have about 140 thousand of the share....sizeable dent but to each his own
How can you NOT teach your kids the beauty of playing an instrument?! How could you be so selfish as to not imbue your offspring with the passion for creativity and ingenuity?! This is HOW we live. This is WHY we live. God bless you Blake.
Jeffry Schwindt Blake is what Derek would be if he was into a different type of music. Blake is to Ry Cooder like Derek is to Duane Allman. Plus Derek is more technical of a slide player. Blake is a big classical style player. His knowledge of chord structures is pretty crazy. He's an amazing slide player but he's great in a lot of other areas of guitar.
The tone is so good that i feel a bit sick. Those 68 Princetons are really something else. That franken-strat-tele sounds incredible with gold-foil pickups(?) too
Just when I thought he couldn't be making it harder I noticed his right pinky on the volume knob all through the song, giving it the slight vibrato feel 🤯
As a croc-wearing (I really am a cook) open G guitarist myself, I've got a new hero. Touch of the Supertramps about the staccato picking riffs, but the big tones gave me one hell of a warm fuzzy head rush.

indeed it's mindbending
😆

It’s astonishing.
7 years and it’s still going
Ok, he’s definitely worthy of the power he holds over me
Look how he's constantly changing the volume with his pinky, amazing
pinky winky went to makret
Check him out with Vulfpeck
@@WhiskerWhippers yeah that’s a great performance
Holy shit!
The way he plays with the volume knob mesmerizes me
You should check out Roy Buchanan, if you haven't already. He was a werewolf as well.
Jeff Beck is also a master at that.
It almost seemed like he had volume and tone switched?
buy this man a volume pedal

Annnnnnnnd I'm back again to watch this. It's daily at this point. That harmonic tap gets me every fucking time
in the same boat, man.
I'm back again too.
That guitar tone is so thick and delicious you could spread it on toast :D
I want to hump that amp every time he hits that low E.

This would be too much awesomeness combined. Arguably, three of the most talented and relevant guitar players out there.
Just discovered Blake. What a player! I'm big fan of Joey tOo for 2-3 years at least. Now i'm gona move on Julian :)
Buddy. That combo.
Bro god damn that trio
I saw a show in Brooklyn where Lage opened for Mills. They played a couple tunes together.
Had to come back to this. The Van Gogh of guitarists for our generation. People will lose their mind to this someday.

My 1st time seeing this. Extraordinary playing and serious vocal too. I reckon he's got a couple of heavy gauge flats on the E & A string.
That swampy ass, dirty Fender tube tone! Love that tube tremelo too, sputtering and spitting at all the right moments...badass! Great song and a super talent.
So happy to see Ry Cooder’s influence on a new generation. Wonderful!
I knew I'd heard this style but couldn't place it. Thanks for the reminder.

IndicacannaJones What is his 6th string tuned to?
tpmc12 He is tuned down from open D to Open C# Hope that helps...I have a little of it down...VERY little
I’m late but man, I’m obsessed with Blake Mills guitar compositions and songwriting.
And he hangs out with Fiona Apple. Jayzus
his bassline run at 4:45 is unreal

Just discovered Blake Mills. Man, this song stirs something deep inside me. This dude's tone and phrasing are friggin' amazing!
God damn, that tone with that volume control. Its all so perfect.
Holy shit. Technical skill. Singing/songwriting. Mr Mills is a virtuoso.
Patrick Moore Eric Clapton said Blake is the last real master of the guitar he has ever seen.

this way of playing its just absurdly great. danm.

the way he playing the volume knob while hes playing. i had no idea. he manually does his own tremelo!!!
Amazing. Sonically just gets deep into my soul.
Sounds like an explosion when he hits that open low e haha
It's extra heavy sounding because it's tuned down to C#
Wow, it's a smart playing with a lot of feelings, thank you for this beautiful moment !

Heart melter all the way Blake...
This guys great. Looking forward to a new album
If I find this guitar tone one day in my life, be sure that I'll marry it!
Throw a gold foil in the front of ur strat and buy some older fender amps....
Elijah Young I think I was readying that he actually uses an old weirdo Guyatone pickup in the neck. Regardless, Tone City
he also uses an amp made from an old projector, you can find more about them somewhere I'm sure, can't remember the name.
Sim Ross I think Tim Pierce has one as well. He talked about it in his video about amps.
It's the Supro/Valco steel guitar pick up in the bridge position that Ry Cooder turned us on to.
Nobody can handle that, just thank you
I'm a huge Derek Trucks fan but shit, this dude's causing me to rethink my life...
Jeffry Schwindt me too thanks
