No joke, back when I first saw it maybe 5 years ago, this video launched my deep respect for Blake Mills’ music and guitar playing. As a hobbyist guitar player, I’ve learned a ton from listening to his albums and interviews.
I get it, this video made me go down the Blake Mills rabbit hole as well. He's an astounding guitarist I listen to a lot these days, along with Julian Lage.
Matt has got to be the most genuine, unassuming, decent bloke in music, this series is brilliant, I loved it the first time round, love them just as much again now
I did...that was crazy. But it messed up the dialogue pretty badly because the Russian dubbing was loud and made it hard to hear the English. Glad to see a clean copy is up again!
I play congas, and most Americans dont understand the depth of cuban music. Its so sophisticated with deep roots. Amazing Blake just happened to bump into Ry Cooter two days before Cuban trip. Serendipity.
Genius guitar player!! I’m surprised someone hasn’t transcribed this whole video I wish I had the time…. Especially around 7:15 everyone says it’s stock Cuban music but it really doesn’t sound like anyone I’ve heard besides maybe Manuel Galban and Mar Ribot. This guy changed my perspective years ago when this came out!
Amazing seeing all these again. They honestly all changed the game for me when they first aired, this one in particular changed my entire guitar trajectory
I got to see Mills do a sound check at a recorded live Public Radio show. I have seen a number of great artists do their sound checks; I have never seen a more meticulous setup than done by Blake Mills. He was literally sculpting the sound he would produce in the live show. Needless to say, the live show was flawless. It was a number of years ago and I have never forgotten his attention to detail.
Im glad to see these brought back. Matt is a great guy and the light-heartedness of his questioning makes these episodes so worth watching. Ive learned a lot from these. Thanks to everyone.
First heard Blake Mills with Pino Palladino and Sam Gendel on Notes With Attachments and was absolutely blown away (by all of them). Gotta check out more of his stuff.
@@supernothing77 The Green Party is a niche political party in the United States. It's very idealistic but also very small, and has never fielded a successful presidential candidate, so the joke is that nobody takes them seriously in politics.
i like Blakes comment about studying different types of music because my guitar teacher used to ALWAYS tell me the guitar players with the best phrasing are people who listened to a lot of horn players. I think Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia also had a lot of ability at making their guitars sound like different instruments as well especially on songs like Dark Star, Eyes of The World and Bird Song.
This is a great interview and one that I was hoping would ge re-uploaded. But why the "premier" TH-cam countdown? This isn't a premiere because this video is not new and was on TH-cam for quite a while in the past.
"The Major 7th Thing" as Blake Mills calls it (at 6:07) sounds a lot like what I thought Robbie Krieger, the guitarist with the Doors, was trying to do with the song "The End."
What ? I didn’t know this cat was such a good musician and guitarist ! Didn’t know the interviewer either 😮 Sorryyyyyyy ! I’ll dig in your channel to discover more of you two guys ! Thank you 🙏
Can somepne please tell me what song they are playing @ 7:15 ? I think this is something I really need to learn to progress my playing. Also get out of my comfort zone. It sounds so lovely! Thank you, and thanks @Matt for making this interveiws. I was, and I am bingewatching your stuff. Regards and much love from germany!
Harmonically, it's very typical and might as well be Havana by Camila Cabello. But what he is playing on top is where the juice is. If it's a specific song, I don't know it.
It's like watching birds fly. They know nothing of aerodynamics or pressure differentials..... they just fly because they are birds. That's, for me, how Blake Mills operates. The instrument, even his hands, are merely the materials. It's his ability to imbue his music with his humanity that really soars.
any body feel like they have a handle on what he might be referencing with the whole outro performance? I need more of that jazzy-surfy guitar music in my lexicon
4:00 .. I mean this was John McLaughlin’s thing. You’re really gonna act like this is your own invention? The whole conceit of Mahavishnu Orchestra is jazz-fusion with Indian classical music
lol i hate this guy so much (for being as good as he is) his record from 2018 called "Look" that's just him playing guitar synths, and it's INSANE what he can make a guitar sound like... it's his least traditional, but his more recent work's stunning as well
No joke, back when I first saw it maybe 5 years ago, this video launched my deep respect for Blake Mills’ music and guitar playing. As a hobbyist guitar player, I’ve learned a ton from listening to his albums and interviews.
No joke, same here
I knew I had seen this before! Thought I was losing it for a second.😂
i still remember how disappointed i was to see he had no cuban album out
For real this videos original upload changed my life lmao
I get it, this video made me go down the Blake Mills rabbit hole as well. He's an astounding guitarist I listen to a lot these days, along with Julian Lage.
These videos have been my guitar bible since i first watched them as a kid
The Cuban outro song is incredible.... just incredible.
Matt has got to be the most genuine, unassuming, decent bloke in music, this series is brilliant, I loved it the first time round, love them just as much again now
It's back up!!! Did anyone else watch that Russian dub version of the episode just to listen to that outro again? I am glad the original is back.
I did...that was crazy. But it messed up the dialogue pretty badly because the Russian dubbing was loud and made it hard to hear the English. Glad to see a clean copy is up again!
Many times lol.
I play congas, and most Americans dont understand the depth of cuban music. Its so sophisticated with deep roots. Amazing Blake just happened to bump into Ry Cooter two days before Cuban trip. Serendipity.
So happy this video is back. Would be so sick to get an updated longer video with Blake. Perhaps an interview with him in sound city would be insane.
Blake is the high water mark for contemporary musical expression. An inspiration.
Genius guitar player!! I’m surprised someone hasn’t transcribed this whole video I wish I had the time…. Im in absolute AWE with how effortlessly Blake plays the guitar. The Master Samurai of Music. Hats off.
Sweeney is how I first discovered Blake Mills. Glad to see this❤
This guy is absolutely on another level when it comes to musicianship… deep respect for Blake Mills
That Cuban stuff is does is so unique and out of this world skillful

Is there a recording out there of this show? I'd love to hear it
I remember when this first came out, it changed my musical life... love to see a new blake mills interview.
Im glad to see these brought back. Matt is a great guy and the light-heartedness of his questioning makes these episodes so worth watching. Ive learned a lot from these. Thanks to everyone.
Matt Sweeney fuckin rules
Classic. I've watched this one many many times.
He’s such an honest guy. I always wanted my guitar to sound like a saxophone or a dirty sounding harmonica.
this is the best guitar show in the world imo
This is my favorite series ever. I could rewatch it endlessly.
So happy this video is back, so I can watch it again and again. Two people that make me very happy.
First heard Blake Mills with Pino Palladino and Sam Gendel on Notes With Attachments and was absolutely blown away (by all of them). Gotta check out more of his stuff.
Break Mirrors is such a fantastic record
Thanks Blake
thank you for the reupload! this was my favorite one of episodes. blake’s afro cuban jazz playing is marvelous!
thanks to bill & matt. this whole dang series gots guitarists that just sound like no other. fantastic.
This video not only got me into Blake but also Ry Cooder too so thank you
“new episode” this “new episode” that, our brother is cooking, allow him time to rebuild the community and take back ownership of his hard work!
So happy this series is back!!!!!!!
Wow this has been a shitty day but I just randomly found that guitar moves was back and it will now end on a high note. Thanks Matt
I will say one thing Mr. Blake is bursting with interesting musical ideas and guitar tricks.
Holy S. Fantastic playing. So glad to see these videos after missing them the first time around.
“It’s like the Green Party” humor might be Blake’s greatest guitar skill
I'm out of the loop. What's the Green Party?

@@danielstoddart hey thanknyou for the explanation kind sir
His work with Dylan was excellent.
Welcome back, Matt!
never saw this when it “aired”
good shit .

Welcome back Guitar Moves Matt Sweeney ❤
Hands down one of my favorite episodes. That sitar shit is fucking awesome!!
Again Matt, thanks so much for the insight into these incredible minds, your show continues to inspire.
Blake Mills, truly amazing🙏🏻
This is a great interview and one that I was hoping would ge re-uploaded. But why the "premier" TH-cam countdown? This isn't a premiere because this video is not new and was on TH-cam for quite a while in the past.
Hell yeah!!! Pt 2!!!
"The Major 7th Thing" as Blake Mills calls it (at 6:07) sounds a lot like what I thought Robbie Krieger, the guitarist with the Doors, was trying to do with the song "The End."
His playing reminds me of Chris Whitley. Fantastic!!!
Hey just discovered this channel. Saw the one with Dean Ween first. Great videos glad I found it. Looking forward to the next one
What ? I didn’t know this cat was such a good musician and guitarist ! Didn’t know the interviewer either 😮 Sorryyyyyyy ! I’ll dig in your channel to discover more of you two guys ! Thank you 🙏
Psyched this show is back
Can't wait!
Outstanding 😊

Get into cuban music 🫱
Fucking finally! It's back!
Flashback Friday
He's so good that it's scary
Blake’s fretboard looks like it would be very satisfying to clean
Does he have any albums/ songs recorded playing in the sitar style?
matt! get doug gillard on the show!
Sweet Ass Git Moves!!!
Tom Waits would love this kid..

I guarantee this channel will have millions of subscribers if you could just get into the eyes of more viewers and old fans..
Insightful
any body feel like they have a handle on what he might be referencing with the whole outro performance? I need more of that jazzy-surfy guitar music in my lexicon
I was wondering this myself - definitely Ry Cooder - esque.
Sublime
Edit: not the band
4:01 Smashing Pumpkins - Luna
Nice!
Anyone know if that is a song at 7:17 or is that just a Cuban riff
Dude, I can't stand pretty much every youtuber guitar player there is. You. are. Awesome. When are you going to get to hang out with Trey?
wheres the classic josh homme episode??
Loved this one. Bet he still hasn't cleaned the fingerboard cheese.
Have some respect. That's toan cheese to you.
4:00 .. I mean this was John McLaughlin’s thing. You’re really gonna act like this is your own invention? The whole conceit of Mahavishnu Orchestra is jazz-fusion with Indian classical music
very g. weller .. .
wow, this is such a throwback.... thanks for reuploading this
What's the cuba record he worked on?
When We Get New Episode??? WWGNE? WWGNE? WWGNE? WWGNE? WWGNE? WWGNE? WWGNE? WWGNE? WWGNE? WWGNE?
And BILL FRISELL.
Bill Frisell would be an awesome guest for this show. He's so soft spoken and gentle. Almost professorial.
Did he make a solo intrumental guitar record? Mills not Matt.
Not really. Closest is "Notes with attachments" with Pino Palladino
why aren't there new episodes? and why are the old episodes presented as new episodes. very confusing.
Yeah, so great to watch this again but I also thought new episodes were coming
@TelevisionCanyons in the channel description it says they are making new episodes but it seems they are more diy and need time.
Its probably a rights thing, not that hard to understand
I hear Robby Krieger.
lol i hate this guy so much (for being as good as he is)
his record from 2018 called "Look" that's just him playing guitar synths, and it's INSANE what he can make a guitar sound like... it's his least traditional, but his more recent work's stunning as well
Ry Cooder walks in..
No.
Yeah.
Wouldn't that just be lydian a 6:40 ?
Chavez>Led Zeppelin etc.
great playing now wash and polish that guitar neck broo lol
If you dont know Ry Cooder you better learn 😠
Id like to think anyone familiar with the rolling stones or anyone who has seen the movie crossroads knows who Ry is or has at least checked him out
Blake Mills is one of the best songwriters right now.
But we should definitely not like people from Malibu, says guy on the right.
