Just the dynamics and atmosphere he creates, even down to the brushes and brick on the drum, are hypnotizing. Captivated by anything Blake does. Complete master
Blake is a consistently brilliant musician, performer, interpreter and songwriter. As a guitar player I aspire to someday be able to express myself 1/10 as beautifully and eloquently as he does with his understated, soulful playing. I can listen to this (and most of his performances) on repeat and not get tired of it.
4:24 I don't know if anyone realised but he hit a clam and managed to resolve it using a passing chord...that is next level on the spot playing. incredible
I agree. It seems so simple. I think I can understand what he does on an intellectual level - his thing is keeping a bassline going, play chord fragments to outline the progression, and throw in fills and melodies. But trying to even pull of a super-simplified version of this and keep the groove going is really difficult, not to mention singing at the same time. I think he's easily one of the most unique, incredible guitar players in the world. I don't want to say "best" because everyone has their own likes and dislikes, but he's my favorite.
How do you define "processed"? Because what you're hearing are vibrations of strings amplified and distorted at the signal level, recorded and translated into a sampled binary signal, compressed using an algorithm, combined with video, uploaded to youtube (meaning compressed *again* with Google's algorithm), stored for years, and upon playing it, decompressed into an imperfect waveform representation of the original recording, sent as electrical signals to your speakers that vibrate the air, which your ears pick up. That's actually MORE processing than an EDM track that is originally created on a computer.
JacksonPolyp Blake understands respect due the songwriter. It's classy and too many performers neglect to do so preferring own arrangement and change of the original lyric.
Konstantin Purschke that's called a tap harmonic. Basically you fret a note and then you "tap" the string 12 frets higher than that note, creating a harmonic. Hope this helps!
i agree regardless, but i just listened through decent earbuds for the first time and it’s a lot more bearable. the treble isn’t painful like it normally is
milk808 Agreed... Glaspy is good, but chordal arrangement, passing tones and fills by Blake...not even close, and I like Glaspy. MG is playing open chords pretty much. BW wins this one IMHO.
The intro to this video filled me with rage.
The percussion performance in this is really tasteful.
Yea Eddie Vedder is a surprisingly good percussionist

I keep returning to this. It's an absolute masterclass.
I cannot believe what I just heard and saw. Amazing.

That tone is so fucking superb. It just does not get any better than that. Magic

Dr. H Totally, and the best part was learning the term "hit a clam".
Blake doesn't any anything by accident. ;)
Honestly, I don't think it's a mistake. It seems very intentional and I quite like it! : P
He plays Eb, the 6th over Gm, no passing chord.
Watched an interview today where he said he tried a new song life and kept missing frets by one fret for good 5 minutes straight haha
If i met Blake Mills and I told how long i've been playing guitar and showed him how little i can play, im sure he would tell me to find a new hobby.
I've been looking for a new guitarist to obsess over. I think I found him!

@@alfgwahigain5544 I think you hit the nail on the head. Incredibly talented and incredibly unique.
I found this yesterday and since than I played this again and again ...
Absolutely brilliant, love your guitar playing 🙏🏻👍🏻
Awseome! Beautiful guitar playing! Sweet tune!
Brilliant playing and interpretation. Still love Lucinda's singing, but this is great.
Whew!! He is unbelievable!!!
I really believe music shouldn't be processed as much as it is these days, it becomes so sterile, this is music to me
the vocals are really compressed my dude

@@MikleShnikle I was in the room when this was shot, I can assure it sounds just like what I witnessed :)
Great version
Incredible guitarist
I love how he doesn't change the gender of the pronoun in the line "I've been dying for you boy." It's a new era y'all. Revel in it.
JacksonPolyp Blake understands respect due the songwriter. It's classy and too many performers neglect to do so preferring own arrangement and change of the original lyric.
Blake has no care for his own ego while he's playing, he only serves the music. That's why he's masterful.

Can anyone tell me what he does at 0:39? Does this technique have a name? Sounds damn good!
Konstantin Purschke that's called a tap harmonic. Basically you fret a note and then you "tap" the string 12 frets higher than that note, creating a harmonic. Hope this helps!
Rare, and not easy, to have a cover completely outshine the original. Props to Lucy, and I'm sure she agrees.
I disagree. Have you seen Lucinda play live? I have.....Her voice ids rough and quavery, and so is Mills Voice, but Lucinda has mire soul
I like this better than the original version...
I think he toured in her band. He's played this as much as she has
EMOTION, VERY GOOD
wow incredible drumming. who is that guy?
Stuart Johnson
un abrazo
beautiful
That filmosound 385 paired with the reverberammo sounds glorious
Anybody knows Lucinda knows great writing
Unbelievable
I like this better than the original
I dont
The intro of this video is so annoying
agreed, kills the mood of the song...
i agree regardless, but i just listened through decent earbuds for the first time and it’s a lot more bearable. the treble isn’t painful like it normally is
Oui
He reminds me bob dylan
I bet he has sat and played with Bob. If not, I am certain Bob knows who Blake is.
Somebody knows in what running this is?
Thanks : nice !
Damn good
Any idea what that box is the percussionist is playing?
a wood block :)
wood block
any idea what's up with this tele ? what's that neck pickup ? sounds amazing
Gold foil neck pickup. Sounds amazing!
Its a teisco gold foil.
mcmeter awesome thx. love this sound
I think most of what your hearing and appreciating is in his hands and heart.
I love that he doesn't change the pronouns
Boy is not a pronoun...
Sam is correct. 'Boy' is a noun.
@@samlacey7033 Ian is glad he didn't change that.
does anyone know the guitar model?
It's a Telecaster with a Teisco-type goldfoil pickup in the neck, tuned to D.
Stuart Johnson!!!
I will pay someone to tab this out
It really isnt that difficult if you watch closely you could look up lucinda's tabs and figure out what key and the progression and start from there
DM me if ya want lol
TUNING GUITAR?
STANDARD D?
Thank's! the sound it's different. Better. regards from Italy
How the heck does he get his bass notes to sound like an actual bass and not a guitar
If you like this go check out Trevor Menear :) amazing guitar player and singer songwriter
did anyone think it may have been a better performance with blake by himself? i didn't really feel like the drummer was vibing with blake a heap.
wow really i completely disagree. i think it's rare and beautiful to hear such creative and nuanced percussion
fair point man!
What the hell is that intro
Tele with flat strings and Gretsch neck pickup. Hummm, interesting.
That's a Teisco Gold Foil pickup (or a reproduction).
@@killablooz Thanks mate.
Pales in comparison to the original by Lucinda Williams. Maybe his phrasing takes some getting used to.
Beautiful guitar and percussion but he doesn't have the voice or phrasing fro this song. He has a good voice but it's not right for this song.
Margaret Glaspy's version on Fretboard Journal channel blows this away...IMHO Check it out.
You must be related to her dear sir, cause her version isn't close to this!
milk808 Agreed... Glaspy is good, but chordal arrangement, passing tones and fills by Blake...not even close, and I like Glaspy. MG is playing open chords pretty much. BW wins this one IMHO.
