The sky cleared up, birds started to sing and the bolder fell from my shoulders when I heard "Set up situations, not plots". It's like I'm seeing the worlds for the first time. That is simply genius - I'm not kidding or being sarcastic; it is truly genius. :D

A golden rule, as far as I'm concerned. The plot should be derived by connecting the dots between the situations we create! :)

I agree with Paul Dee (ryme not intended). Im a total noob to this roleplaying games (Im a board game nerd). I have no buds playing these kind of games.. and Im trying to dive into some single player stuff, just for the learning curve with all these rules, pen & paper and dice things :) Im trying to get down to the core of it, so you explaining stuff is gold. Cheers

Great! Hopefully I can make things as clear as possible. I really do think that Scarlet Heroes is a great place to start. Next up I'm going to do a detailed look at those Encounter Builder cards mentioned in this video.

Roll random or create situations. Play your Character. A story will emerge naturally from your character's actions & the reactions of the world. Let it flow!
I think Scarlet Heroes even says something similar in the Creating Adventures section. A plot before play is what you don't need.

Really enjoying the series. I've dabbeled in solo RPGs, however, I always find the combat to be the hardest to do. It always seems to come down to just rolling dice back and forth without a lot of strategy. It's really hard to GM combat for yourself, because you just can't surprise yourself. I think a solo RPG like this could really benefit from some sort of random tactics deck i.e. gloomhaven so that you as the player never really know for sure what the enemy is going to do.

I can totally see that. Luckily for me, combat is always the least interesting thing in an RPG, so that's why I will mostly be abstracting it. Also, Scarlet Heroes combat is super fast! HOWEVER, in the next session or two I will be creating a more complex and dynamic combat scenario to show how I would handle it.

First! Believe it or not, but this series is my most anticipated viewing on TH-cam right now :) glad you're sticking with it and loving experiencing how you are evolving this narrative!

Thanks! Glad you are enjoying it. Next up will be some wilderness exploration! Looking forward to that.

@@TheDungeonDive whoop whoop! Definitely! Good to see you using the rumours from Folklore (got my Dark Tales box this morning).

Such a great deck of cards! Way more dungeon crawl and adventure games need a way to play side quests. There are even rules to play Folklore in total freeform mode, just playing one side quest after another.

I love your shoutout to Folklore.
Following in your footsteps these years I have mixed Runebound 2E with random oracles and most recently Folklore with Lamentations of the Flame Princess. I am a noob and stumbling through it but having a lot of fun.
My Folklore/LoFP combo has been the most fun so far.
    I am loving your series!

Nice! I'm looking forward to doing some kind of hexcrawl on various Runebound boards with Scarlet Heroes.

Daniel, loving this series by the way. One technique I used to use in creative writing classes was simply flipping a coin for a yes/no result. Got some really interesting character combinations using this method: a character who loves swimming, but afraid of the sea!

You're doing a wonderful job with this series. Awesome presentation as well. I love the subtle VHS tracking transitions and the amazing intro with your synthwork and everything. Great artistry and mood setting. Looking forward to the next one! :)

I'm curious to know what elements or tools you've stopped using at this point, perhaps because they were less useful or just superfluous.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I haven't stopped using anything yet, but there are some things I haven't started using because I'm not finding them useful. The big one is the Tome of Adventure Design. I don't find it very useful for making things up on the fly, which is something I'm doing a lot if.
