    Gotta say Sarah I love these videos.. and shhhh.... I like them more than Ben's... Maybe that's because I am training for my 1st Ultra the Eden Valley 50k in 4 weeks time and your tips and videos have been so so helpful in this training cycle. Fantastic that you chose this part of the south downs way to do your back to back long run video as I do pretty much all my long runs over the Southease to Eastbourne route. I have a 22 miler tomorrow and chuffed its cooled down a bit. I also received my purple legend hat this morning so will be sporting that tomorrow ..looking forward to the next one. Also 10k time trial ...yes please..

    Thank you for this video Sarah. It's so nice to see you on turf I'm familiar with.
    I've recently started training for my first ultra (South Coast Challenge - 100k over 2 days) and I'm so excited.
    I did almost exactly what you did this weekend - double long run - 38k on the hills over the south downs on Saturday, and a nice flat coastal route (about 22k) on Sunday.
    As a newbie to ultra running I find your videos accessible and inspiring! Best of luck to you on your next race x

    I love doing back to back long runs. I actually did double 20’s once 3 weeks out from a marathon and I think it really helped me out. Maybe overkill for a standard marathon, but it was a huge mental boost.

    Another great video! I'm in the baby stages of ultra training. I signed up for a 4 wk foundation base building plan on vert.run, which has been eye opening, especially where it makes me incorporate strength, mobility, & yoga. Hi Sarah: Thank you for these videos on 50 mile race training. I am a 59 year old recreational trail runner from Nepal. I have taken part in a few 50K races here in Nepal but am psyching myself up to do a 50 Mile race next. Since I have relatives in San Francisco, I am thinking of doing the North Face 50 Miler there, whenever it may happen after we get over this COVID pandemic. I like your idea about doing two back-to-back runs instead of a single big run, and my body will agree with that :). I will surely follow your other videos to learn more. By the way, in the video, I thought I saw a sign for the University of Sussex. I am currently doing a fully online Masters course in Energy Policy from University of Sussex. I hope to visit the University some day :). Thanks again. Cheers, Suman.

    This came at just the right time and was great advice, thanks Sarah. I hadn't previously thought about doing long back to back runs but, after watching the video, I realised that this was what I should do. So, I did 30km last Saturday and 30km on Sunday. Easy, even pace from beginning to end. Felt good at the end of both days. I think I am nearly ready for the big one (but I'm not saying what that is yet).

    B2B runs are a good way of getting used to running on tired legs, but they are very straining, they can compromise upcoming training sessions, and can make you become slower. Plus, you risk injury... Proceed with care.

      hey kevin, personally i just try and avoid sitting down at aid stations completely as i know i won't want to get back up again! just come in, refill your drinks, grab whatever food you need and get out as soon as possible!

    11wks out from my first Ultra.
    A 35mile in the Dorset hills.
    I have done 6 marathons and fully understand the training. Never done back to back long runs, so keen to try it out.
    As a single long run, how far would you go ? I usually did 21/22 miles for my marathons. Should do anymore distance for the ultra ? Thanks.

    Great video again Sarah!👍 Watching your (and Ben's) videos is really giving me the seed in my head to try an ultra. Should I get a few marathons under my belt before turning to ultras? I have done just 1 marathon previously although am a fairly seasoned runner at shorter distances. Any advice would be a great help. PS keep up the great work!👍

      hey mark, no right and wrong here, but i think it's sensible to build up gradually. doesn't mean you have to go and do a bunch of road marathons but maybe have a look for some trail halfs and marathons and get used to the terrain etc and then when you feel ready start having a look at some longer distances. but the fact that you have been running for a while and have built up a good base is a big plus! good luck and enjoy!

    New subscriber and new to trail running. Question: do you wear trail shoes or reg running shoes? Thanks!

    • @JonsConsciousLife
      @JonsConsciousLife 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regular road shoes are perfectly fine for easy and well groomed trail. If it gets technical with lots of roots, rocks, tripping hazards, loose ground, etc, I’d recommend trail shoes.

    Another great video ... I did my first ultra at the beginning of August ... a 50k, which I really enjoyed ... I kinda did my own training plan, including some back to back long runs (not 20 milers though !) but could definitely of benefited from a more specific training and just wondered if you guys might add an ultra plan(s) to your available plans on your website ?

    • @SarahPlace
      @SarahPlace  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey dave, we were talking about it the other day actually. i am a bit sceptical to do so just because every ultra is SO different with regards to terrain and elevation and conditions etc and so much is down to the mindset and nutrition as well which is difficult to put into a training plan! so at the moment it's unlikely, but might be something we work on for the future as a lot of people have been asking!

      @@SarahPlace Ah thanks for taking the time to reply. That all makes sense ... I made the mistake of treating mine (was the Round Reading Ultra) .. as something that was just a slightly longer Marathon lol ! And for the next one I think i'll seek out some more knowledge for sure :-)

    Any tips for the Lakeland 5 Passes next year - 33 miles/10,000ft ascent? I’m trying to mix up my runs but it’s difficult to get anywhere near that ascent without being in the hills or mountains. 10K time trial has your name on it :)

    Excellent video Sarah and some great tips - I’m keen to try an ultra next year after being inspired by reading ‘The rise of the Ultra Runners’ and watching your vids. Is a 50k doable training 3/4 runs a week (busy being dad cabs to kids) and where could I find a sensible training plan please? 😁👍🏼

    • @SarahPlace
      @SarahPlace  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi! yes it's certainly possible, the training for a 50k won't be too different from a marathon so i'd probably just adapt a marathon plan slightly by swapping out some speed sessions for hill sessions and putting in a few back to back long runs on the weekend. and just try and make it as specific as possible to your race, so get out on the trails/hills as much as possible if that's what the race is like. hope that helps!

    Great video Sarah, thank you for sharing! I was wondering if you would recommend something similar like two half marathons back to back as part of a marathon training plan?

    • @SarahPlace
      @SarahPlace  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey! no need for marathon distance, there are lots of other things that would be more beneficial to focus on, such as some long runs with chunks at goal pace or a fast finish long run where you push hard in the last couple of miles to mimic those latter stages of the race :)

    Hi Sarah! Which 50 miles race would you recommend to someone wanting to do their first ultra? Ideally, with no cut off time because that’s scare me a lot 😂😂
    I’m from London and I wouldn’t mind traveling 😉

    • @SarahPlace
      @SarahPlace  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey alessandra - have a look at centurion they do some great 50 milers and lots of people use those as their first one. there are cut offs but they are fairly generous. also check out threshold sports as they put on the race to the king, race to the stones etc which are great events for first timers with lots of aid stations and extremely generous cut offs! x

    when you do long runs do you ever stop to walk? I am getting up into the teens for long runs and if I ever stop I feel like such a failure because I didn't "run" the whole thing.

    • @JonsConsciousLife
      @JonsConsciousLife 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Waking is not failure. I did a 10 minute : 1 minute run/walk ratio for my first 2 marathons. For my third I ran through it as planned but still took walk breaks whenever I felt like it during training. There’s no shame in walking. At all.
