    I've got my first 100k coming up this weekend, and I came here just looking for some last-minute tips and tricks, what I didn't expect to get was exactly the confidence boost I needed. "If you can run a marathon, you can run 100k" is exactly what I needed to hear today!

    Great video. My tip doing longer runs or ultras is 1. Make sure your head is with you. Have a backup plan so if something happens just take it like it is. Many People give Up because their plan didnt hold Up. 2. Take Care of your Body! Change socks jf needed. Clean out dirt from your shoes. Make sure nothing is shafing!!! A blister can ruin your run. 3. Have fun. See it as an adventure instead of a must do!
    With above you can do whatever is ahead of you :)

    I've done two ultramarathon runs so far, so still a newbie but
    1. You do not need to wait for a checkpoint to eat (or use a gel). In fact, it actually might be a better idea to use gels while moving.
    2. If your gel does not have salts in it, take salt tablets of some kind, you'll be very glad for it. Ideally do this the same time you use the gel.
    3. Top up with food at checkpoints. Feels nice to have *something* solid to eat every so often.
    I am still not sure whether to do a third Country to Capital in January, but I'm almost certain about doing the NDW 50 next year - I have had the tab open in my browser for days! I'm not sure I will have any 50k runs under my belt as part of the prep tho!
    Edit: Good luck with your run!

  • @jeffw654

    I ran a 100km race on the weekend. I had issues for the first 34km where my stomach was upset, so I didn't eat or drink. I was losing steam and starting to cramp. Once my stomach settled I was able to eat food and gels and drink. I started to bounce back and after the 45km aid station where I ate even more and drank a Coke, I felt like I could run again, but took a big stack. I was able to get the rest done, but it was very difficult.
    My biggest takeaway is to train your stomach to eat from the start. When you start with an energy deficit it will be difficult to eat enough to catch back.

    Everybody says "Don't go out too fast," but it's hard to know what that means. My rule of thumb for is that for the first half of an ultra I should never feel like I'm "working". This means I do lots of flat miles at a 10+ or even 11+ pace, but for a 50mi or 100k it's still a lot faster than I've moving by the end.

  • @juliemckie72
    @juliemckie72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video Sarah - I totally agree about not stopping long at aid stations, and sitting down is the worse thing you can do - just keep moving. And that’s a great tip about not putting food in the back of your pack, what seems quite ‘easy’ to do at any other time can be a massive faff when you’re running an ultra!! You need to do everything you can to minimise the faff-factor! Best of luck next Saturday ☺️

  • @peterseager6970
    @peterseager6970 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My top tip would be ‘look after your feet’. I thought I had done it all right before my 50k back in Feb, but ended up with the worst blisters in my life. The discomfort certainly made the last ten k,s ‘interesting’.
    Two causes I think - Shoes may not have been fully broken in (rookie mistake ) and I didn’t put any Vaseline or other anti chafe on. Have since been introduced to a product called ‘Gurneygoo’, which is great!
    Also, good to see you back Sarah and keep the vids coming 👍

    • @BatTechnologies
      @BatTechnologies 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was going to say the same thing. Good feet care is essential. If it is going to be a wet race (and I believe you are in the Arc @Sarah Place) then something to protect your feet is really needed. I'm a fan of Vaseline - and a lot of it - but there is other stuff out there.

    The best and easiest way to do an Ultra distance is by train I think. But 1st class definitely improves the experience - and I agree completely, have your food in front of you, maybe on the table if you can get one. • @forestplanemountain

    My 4 tips:
    Cycling gloves on trail ultras have saved my hands countless times.
    Planning what you’ll do at aid stations as you approach: bottles out, lids off, etc. helps me (it’s like choreographing triathlon transitions).
    Also, for pacing when I’ve done a race before, having aid station splits written on my number or pinned to my vest helps me have something to aim for.
    Finally, having a goal of getting the right ratio of walking from the beginning and training for uphill power walking really seemed to help my endurance.

    Resting at the moment as I have strained abs. Was hoping to run my first ever ultra trail (unofficial) but that's on hold. If you let coke fizz out overnight in fridge great for all manner of things, stops the runs while you run!

    Sarah, I am going to walk/run 100k (2500+) in the late of June. My background is - I've never doing any sports before last summer, when I was 100kg (183cm) 37 years old. Suddenly last summer I decided to walk 100km (only walk), I had 50 days to prepare, so I walked every day a lot and finished 100k in 18 hours. After that I started running, now I am 83kg, but in March after a lot of weeks with 60-70km per week I got shin split. So I stopped running, because it was too painful (I couldn't even walk after that running session for several days), started biking, walking, other activities. Now I again have approximately 50 days before 100k, I am feeling I can run some part of it (20? 30? 50km?), and I am thinking if I should walk a lot again like in previous year. Is it helpful, what is your experience? I saw opposite opinions about mixing walking and running, some people think it is not good.

    I'm also running the NDW50 on Saturday. It's going to be my first Ultra race, I've run 50K twice before. Thanks for the tips, I'm sure they'll help and I know I'll also learn lots from the experience on the day. Can't wait to get to the start line now. Best of luck 👍

    I haven't ran an ultra before but i have done a 62 mile walk for Oxfam (Trailwalker) Running I have done a couple of marathons. I plan on doing an Ultra next year, probably the 100k from Weymouth to Exmouth with Climb South West. Videos like this are brilliant. Thank you for making them and sharing them with us.

    So I was wondering, what sort of temperature range on this particular run? from where I live you'd be pretty much baked at 9am (till 5pm)

    Thanks for the video and the advice! Great job on your training as well! I've got an up-and-coming 50k race so this video is very timely. It's technically my first ultra race but not my first ultra distance. I'm very excited!

    Great Video!! Loved the scenery!! I haven’t run a ultra yet. One mistake I make with marathons is taking off too fast. Good luck to your race!! Welcome back!!

    Great energy and amazing smile :) i ran my first ultra last September , a 56k with about 6500 feet of elevation.Lesson learned : never eat something cooked by the organisers if you don`t know the source.Saves you from extra time in the bushes :))

    Thanks for the video, Sarah! How many days of rest would you recommend when you do a run like this when training for an ultra? Cheers

    50K, that a year ago for me. 😅🤭
    Now I'm only running 5K three times a week, because lots of parks, hiking trails closed.

    Running my first ultra in Oct. Sooooo good to hear your first comment if you can run a marathon you can run a 50mile or 100km. That’s me sorted (in my head at least!)

    Loving your videos! Please keep making them 🙏 Makes such a nice change from the ego and testosterone-fuelled videos of some of the male ultra runners! 😉😂

    Sarah, great stuff and I agree about the Huma gels they are amazing. You videos are consistently high quality, please keep them up because even if you do like the editing you are a natural vlogger too. Good luck on the North Downs 50 👍
