aw thank you, i don't have plans to stop, i just don't know how i was doing it so consistently before! but will hopefully film my race on saturday so there'll be another vid up soon!
I just love you both. So enormous energy you spread across and just having good fun running and exercise 🤜🤛 thank you for making such a inspiring content on TH-cam. It's better than these goofy clips from well-known TH-camrs for teenagers ... So happy that you two make TH-cam
I've got my first 100k coming up this weekend, and I came here just looking for some last-minute tips and tricks, what I didn't expect to get was exactly the confidence boost I needed. "If you can run a marathon, you can run 100k" is exactly what I needed to hear today!
I've done two ultramarathon runs so far, so still a newbie but 1. You do not need to wait for a checkpoint to eat (or use a gel). In fact, it actually might be a better idea to use gels while moving. 2. If your gel does not have salts in it, take salt tablets of some kind, you'll be very glad for it. Ideally do this the same time you use the gel. 3. Top up with food at checkpoints. Feels nice to have *something* solid to eat every so often. I am still not sure whether to do a third Country to Capital in January, but I'm almost certain about doing the NDW 50 next year - I have had the tab open in my browser for days! I'm not sure I will have any 50k runs under my belt as part of the prep tho! Edit: Good luck with your run!
Great video. My tip doing longer runs or ultras is 1. Make sure your head is with you. Have a backup plan so if something happens just take it like it is. Many People give Up because their plan didnt hold Up. 2. Take Care of your Body! Change socks jf needed. Clean out dirt from your shoes. Make sure nothing is shafing!!! A blister can ruin your run. 3. Have fun. See it as an adventure instead of a must do! With above you can do whatever is ahead of you :)
My 4 tips: Cycling gloves on trail ultras have saved my hands countless times. Planning what you’ll do at aid stations as you approach: bottles out, lids off, etc. helps me (it’s like choreographing triathlon transitions). Also, for pacing when I’ve done a race before, having aid station splits written on my number or pinned to my vest helps me have something to aim for. Finally, having a goal of getting the right ratio of walking from the beginning and training for uphill power walking really seemed to help my endurance.
Just great to have you back. I love your videos, you are so natural so I find it hard to believe you are uncomfortable in front of a camera. Good luck in the North Downs 50 miler. Just typing that fills me with awe.
ah thank you russa! i must admit it's a lot easier when i'm out on a trail totally by myself with no one to be seen for miles! if i am filming with people around that's when i fall apart haha!
Great video Sarah - I totally agree about not stopping long at aid stations, and sitting down is the worse thing you can do - just keep moving. And that’s a great tip about not putting food in the back of your pack, what seems quite ‘easy’ to do at any other time can be a massive faff when you’re running an ultra!! You need to do everything you can to minimise the faff-factor! Best of luck next Saturday ☺️
My top tip would be ‘look after your feet’. I thought I had done it all right before my 50k back in Feb, but ended up with the worst blisters in my life. The discomfort certainly made the last ten k,s ‘interesting’. Two causes I think - Shoes may not have been fully broken in (rookie mistake ) and I didn’t put any Vaseline or other anti chafe on. Have since been introduced to a product called ‘Gurneygoo’, which is great! Also, good to see you back Sarah and keep the vids coming 👍
I was going to say the same thing. Good feet care is essential. If it is going to be a wet race (and I believe you are in the Arc @Sarah Place) then something to protect your feet is really needed. I'm a fan of Vaseline - and a lot of it - but there is other stuff out there.
I ran a 100km race on the weekend. I had issues for the first 34km where my stomach was upset, so I didn't eat or drink. I was losing steam and starting to cramp. Once my stomach settled I was able to eat food and gels and drink. I started to bounce back and after the 45km aid station where I ate even more and drank a Coke, I felt like I could run again, but took a big stack. I was able to get the rest done, but it was very difficult. My biggest takeaway is to train your stomach to eat from the start. When you start with an energy deficit it will be difficult to eat enough to catch back.
Lovely and positive. Bravo. ( In a moment of madness am going from almost Zero to 50 miles race [North Canum, 3rd July] in a month. That said I am getting fitter just watching these informative videos.]
Welcome back - great video ! Doing my 1st ultra Run to Sea (Brighton ) at beginning of June ! Trying to make that transition from road/track to trail! Miss your videos - top quality and great runs and routes
Some great advice Sarah. I haven't run an ultra yet but have done plenty of fulls. I have no desire to do an ultra but I loved seeing your run and your attitude towards it. I love seeing all the breaks too. For getting in the long runs sometimes it is just about time on your feet and getting used to being tired. Glad to see you post again and love the scenery. Get Ben to post a video!!! You guys always inspire me and keep me motivated.
I’ve missed your videos!! I haven’t done an ultra, but watching all of your videos convinced me to do my first marathon in July!! Hopefully I’ll get the courage to do an ultra some day!
I love your friendly and inviting approach to ultrarunning! You make me want to leap into that world... But first I want a new road marathon PR... 😆! Keep pushing!
I haven't ran an ultra before but i have done a 62 mile walk for Oxfam (Trailwalker) Running I have done a couple of marathons. I plan on doing an Ultra next year, probably the 100k from Weymouth to Exmouth with Climb South West. Videos like this are brilliant. Thank you for making them and sharing them with us.
Great energy and amazing smile :) i ran my first ultra last September , a 56k with about 6500 feet of elevation.Lesson learned : never eat something cooked by the organisers if you don`t know the source.Saves you from extra time in the bushes :))
Running my first ultra in Oct. Sooooo good to hear your first comment if you can run a marathon you can run a 50mile or 100km. That’s me sorted (in my head at least!)
What a beautiful place to run! Thanks for the tips. When I was training for my first 50k, I put lightly carbonated Nuun into a hard flask and tucked it into the top back of my vest. Just after starting my long run it exploded, covering my hair with fruity goodness.
Hi Sarah, what a great video. brilliant content and it was so nice to see North Wales. I grew up in the Clywdians, the mountain range not far from where you were running. Just wanted to say I really enjoyed it. Keep up the good work
Hi Sarah, thanks for the tips (duly noted) - and for the plan for my first ultra next year :) looking forward to put it in action. Good luck on your race!
I'll be running rim to rim to rim in the grand canyon in the U.S. in the spring and your videos are so helpful. Great tips. I've never run an "official" ultra, and I've definitely never trained for one, llthough I have run ultra-distances before. your tips for running and training are so helpful for me right now! Maybe I'll start sharing my experience just to hold myself accountable because it's so much this first time around!
Fab video + great tips as always. Really enjoy the quality content you post. I found, as you’ve mentioned previously, that doing a recce of the course was invaluable ahead of the event. All the best for NDW50!
Great video Sarah. I am so impressed with your ability to find routes where ever you happen to be. 😃 and to run them by yourself. I wish I was that brave 🙂 Good luck for the 22nd.
I just started watching you and Ben last week so I'm glad you're back uploading! I moved to Woolwich not long ago and had some crap runs when I arrived. You guys brought the spark back to running in London! (PS TH-cam recommended your channel first, sorry Ben.)
Great Video!! Loved the scenery!! I haven’t run a ultra yet. One mistake I make with marathons is taking off too fast. Good luck to your race!! Welcome back!!
Sarah, great stuff and I agree about the Huma gels they are amazing. You videos are consistently high quality, please keep them up because even if you do like the editing you are a natural vlogger too. Good luck on the North Downs 50 👍
Thanks for the video and the advice! Great job on your training as well! I've got an up-and-coming 50k race so this video is very timely. It's technically my first ultra race but not my first ultra distance. I'm very excited!
I ran my first 50k yesterday. It was a two loop course, and I definitely should have had more water on the 1st loop. By the time I was well into the 2nd loop, it was significantly warmer and I really felt the heat and dehydration.
Glad you are ok! I am getting back into longish walks ( 20 mile ) in the hope that I will be able to get back to 50 miles and 100 next year. I've been diagnosed with palindromic seronegative inflammatory arthritis, and it's not great but getting used to it. Also osteoarthritis . It has been good to get back to longer walking.
Thanks for the tips! I’m nervous as hell about my first 100k on the Southdowns on the 30th. I’m doing all the things you suggest so that’s giving me some confidence. just got to get my head into the challenge ahead! Great to have you back, thanks again! 🤘
ah you will be great neil! south downs is one of the loveliest routes in the country, it'll be an amazing day out and it's so runnable so will be perfect for a first 100k. and the hills will help break it up a bit as well. enjoy! i am jealous!!!
What a fun video to watch! 🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️ Beautiful area to run in.... all I have is local track to run on 😢 I have never ran an ultra but would love to try it! I have ran 6 marathons
I'm also running the NDW50 on Saturday. It's going to be my first Ultra race, I've run 50K twice before. Thanks for the tips, I'm sure they'll help and I know I'll also learn lots from the experience on the day. Can't wait to get to the start line now. Best of luck 👍

Thanks for sharing! some great advice there! and yes I totally agree when I did my marathon I got to the end and wanted to burn my shoes XD great video, looking forward to checking out more of your channel!
Great vid. Was wondering when you would post your thoughts on training distances for ultra. Definitely agree on not spending too much time at aid stations. Been there, done that. Tell myself never to sit down at them again.
Resting at the moment as I have strained abs. Was hoping to run my first ever ultra trail (unofficial) but that's on hold. If you let coke fizz out overnight in fridge great for all manner of things, stops the runs while you run! I suffer a lot from jogger's nip, so carry stuff in hydration pack rather than vest, comfort beats style.
Haha - great tips. I could have done with them a month ago when I did my first ultra. I wasted way too much time in the aid stations and managed to spray fizzy cola up my nose after overfilling my bottle. Good luck and enjoy NDW50 at the weekend 👍💪😃
Great tips as always and love the view, I'm planning to start using gels myself since my runs are becoming longer but 50 K is still way off for me. Going to have my first race in a month and to be honest it hovers between exictement and nervous.
leave any more ultra tips down in the comments below and help each other out :)

Best advice I ever got was: keep it simple, run aid station to aid station, and raid them like you paid for them (because you did) 👍
