    Jay, I've seen a lot of people telling you to use the correct color order for ethernet, but I haven't seen anyone say why, other than "it's best to follow the standard." The actual reason why is because each color wire has a twisted pair inside, and the length of each twist is different for each color. Blue will have 72 turns per meter, green 65 turns per meter, etc. This is done to reduce crosstalk. While it's definitely true that you will probably have no problems using different color orders than the standard (aside from the occasional dropped packets), I would never advise anyone in a business environment to make their cables this way.

    jay, the diffrent wire coloring in the connectors is the old T-568 A, what were used to is T-568 B was updated by EIA in 1995.... all it did was swap the oarange and green wires but yeah but thats why its like that, just some tech history knowledge lol

    It does matter what order the cables go. Cat cables are twisted pairs which is designed to keep the impedance of the cable constant. Google why thats important. cat 6 goes one step further and uses a divider inside the sheathe to keep the pairs separate.

    • @djscottdog1
      @djscottdog1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason the impedance can change is wires close together act as capacitors when carrying high frequencies and the distance the wires are apart changes the capacitance.

    WHOA WHOA WHOA... Jay. There is a reason why there are standards for the termination of the CATx Cable. This to reduce or eliminate cross talk on the pairs (I know you know this!). Now if you're using a network that will use all 4 pairs (That's 8 wires for those of you who =/= math); the electrical signals are timed in a way that there is a noise canceling affect and they are still able to use all 4 pairs.
    But shoot.. How the heck do I get started doing a channel like this!? :D YOU FREAKING ROCK

    • @Jayztwocents
      @Jayztwocents  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris Heisler Whats weird is that the order of colors in the wall of this house (wired in 2004) are marked as CAT5e however they were neither the A or B standard. Not sure what it was honestly. They had Green and Green white, along with Brown and Brown White swapped. Blue White, Blue, Orange and Orange white were in the correct order.

      That is pretty jacked up. It does sound like they were just trying to wire for phones and nothing else.
      For those who want to look up the standards:
      TIA/EIA 568A and TIA/EIA 568B
      CAT is the just the standard for the cable itself. Mostly just how many twists per inch of cable. More Twists improves cross-talk cancellation and facilitates faster network speeds. Some CAT cables comes with a divider in them middle as well.
      There is only caveat with CAT5/6/7 cable. a CAT 5 can be ran about 100m before it starts to loose its signal strength. When you add more twists to the pairs, you cannot run is so far. But even CAT 7 can be ran over 80m... I think...I'd have to look that up.
      The differences in the termination standards are are very minor. Only difference is when this standard was ratified, the A standard was for Banks and Govt while the B standard were for commercial and residential. There is no performance difference at all. TBH, I have never seen the A standard ran... ever.
      Anyways, keep up the good work Jay. Awesome work!

    I wired up a house once. What I learned was buy a cable tester. I am good with these things but about half my cables had 1 or 2 wires that did not connect properly or the strands were broken near the end from too much bending (because after connecting to the socket you have to shove the socket into the little hole in the wall and bend the cable in the process).
    A cable tester will quickly tell you which strands are not connected properly or if you got them mixed up, and only costs about 20 euro or so.
    Hey Jay please don't cut off the ends of your wires above a live wireless router, if they fall in through the grate it's toast.
    Cheers!

    Looks like your all moved in. Still a lot of things to do. FYI on your cables, never split your pair. Yes you can make them the same at both ends, if you slit pairs you will get you connected. but will give you problems latter. Wish you and your family good luck in your new home. Keep up with the great videos.

    Jay, you should check out the EZ crimper and ends from platinum tools. Way easier, although the ends cost quite a bit more.
    You don't have to worry about trimming the right length, as you can just push the pairs through the end of the connector, then the crimper trims off the excess

      there for a good reason and the order do matter. I just don't want some

      time. I don't want to start a flame war over that :)

    • @halsoy
      @halsoy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      +jantestowy123 His point about color order not mattering is perfectly valid. As long as, like he pointed out, they are the same in both ends. But for consistency you follow one of the standards. Also removes any guesswork for new people.

    Ah, I've seen that sort of cable thing, too. I had a phone line cabled up into my apartment from the ringer line (I have two ringer lines wired from the front door into my apartment room (several rooms per apartment, everyone has their own ringer)), and the tech only had cable with like 12 wires, so he used 2 wires for the phone jack he installed in my room, and left the other 10 wires. Fyi, the phone jack was for an internet connection.

    Jay! Where was this video 7 months ago. Moved into an apartment and had that exact same setup with the termination of all the cat5 wires. Ended up doing the exact same thing but had to find a switch that could be powered by PoE because the genius that setup the apartment wiring put the wire panel on the bathroom wall 10 feet from the nearest outlet. Would have had to run a power cable across the toilet. PoE saved me from that thankfully.

    Jay, using wireless extenders is the worst thing to do. WiFi is a inefficient protocol by itself (it only delivers half the speed proclaimeddue to technical reasons) and then using an extender/repeater just halfs the speed each time. It's better to distribute several hotspots throughout the house with the same SID. And for a seamless experience, you can even buy access point which support proper handover.

    • @EMILE12345678901
      @EMILE12345678901 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +sur puppa you must mean Hyperthreaded. If that is the case, it simply means that 1 core can act as 2 in the OS. So, 1 physical core will be in fact 2 "virtual" cores.

    • @fadenseiden

    • @xlChronos
      @xlChronos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can look these things up on the internet
      and you must mean hyperthreading, which actually gives you an fps boost in some games and in other games it can even reduce fps if you have it on

    • @ImmaBigE1943
      @ImmaBigE1943 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Émile BV (LordSnail) IIRC, the OS registers twice as many threads because the Hyperthreading threads are seen as virtual cores, but what they really do is queue up data so it can be handed over to the real, physical CPU core for more efficient processing.

    Jay for your Wireless coverage, instead of bridging why not use multiple access points since you have Ethernet throughout the house? Or use a Mesh System with multiple gateway devices connected physically to the network? Open-Mesh / Meraki both are solid options and have MIMO options so you will get maximum throughput for the devices that are in the mesh as repeaters.

    "Feed 1" and "Feed 2" are most likely the main feeds from the telephone demarc. I do installation for AT&T, it's typical to have a main feed or two from both phone and cable demarcs straight to the smart panel. Also, for network configurations "B" standard is commonplace (Orange+White, Orange, Green+White, Blue, Blue+White, Green, Brown+White, Brown). The phone company is the only one I know that still uses the "A" standard.

    Hey Jay, I work for USPS and I know how frustrating it is for you not to receive mail when you should. FYI, there is an agreement between USPS and Amazon that the carriers can scan parcels with a clock-stopper scan like "Undeliverable as addressed" and as a call center agent we're supposed to schedule for redelivery when we see that. I know it's incredibly stupid and I don't know why it exists, but if you ever see it again that package is likely sitting at the post office in your area waiting to be claimed. Sorry bro.

    +JayzTwoCents I wouldn't recommend using wireless bridge mode for extending your WiFi signal. I would have a second router connected by Ethernet, set to AP mode.

    Ethernet pin out is a standard and does matter. You may be able to get away with other pin outs but there is a reason for the twisted pairs especially more so when you certify cat6 and up.
