    Good to see engineering the old way. I've searched the whole of the UK to find any gunsmith with the machinary available to bore out my 'shot out' 1917 Lee Enfield SMLE MkIII* .303 and smooth bore it in the caliber .410 for 2 1/2 inch shotgun cartridges. It's not possible over here anymore.Many were done here in the 70's. It seems that unless it's a new barrel being fitted no one wants to touch the job. Keep up the good work.

    Check out "Rifle Accuracy Facts" by Harold Vaughn. He does a great job explaining this concept. Bottom Line: A smooth chamber will allow greater forces on the bolt lugs, which can also effect the barrel harmonics.

    Only straight-walled rimless cartridges are completely within the chamber.

    Great video. My question however is about the gauge used to take the headspace measurement off of the go/ no go gauge. Any way to get dimensions, measured drawings, machining and assembly notes and etc? The a diy geek in me is loosing his s#!t right now, and frankly, I fear that somehow, only that bit of info will ease the fits . . . .🤔

    Can I have my Marlin 917M2. cal.17 Mach2 bull barrel re-chambered to 17HMR or better yet 17wsm?

    I specialized offset machine does the rifling. This is one type of machine that does it. paste into YT browser> Sine Bar Rifling Machine not Button RIfling Rifler.
    Much love to Brazil :)

    As ever, with these videos, people make comment as to methods and reasons for various operations. Clearly most have no idea of the dynamics of a rifle cartridge firing in a gun. The chamber gripping the case is essential in lowering bolt face pressures. It is patently obvious that most critics have never actually done any chambering work,or indeed have a clue what they're talking about .

    @Bilbo107 Send it to a small place in the states that does just barrels, they might be able to help you out.

    @ 1:34 "The reaming operation leaves the chamber too smooth to grip the cartridge brass"
    That is all wrong. 1. The reamer does not cut that smooth 2. The smoother the chamber the better. You can verify that with a lot of shooting and reloading and by anaysis via FEA.

      Yeah. That didn't sound right to me. Never made a gun barrel but I have been a machinist for 20 years.

      I don't make rifle chambers, I just shoot with them but that sounds mighty unusual to me too.

    Crosstimbers2 you might want to check your facts on that. I have seen many gun smiths polish the chamber with some fine emery to put fine circular lines around the inside of chamber for the cartridge to grip.

    • @deeremeyer1749
      @deeremeyer1749 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because there aren't already "fine circular lines" around the inside of the chamber for the "cartridge to grip"? And how does a cartridge "grip" a chamber and why does it need to if properly "headspaced"? It's not going to go anywhere, is it?

      I agree, the surface finish Ra from a reamer isn’t as good as an abrasive polish ( usually ).
      Besides the fact that reamers inherently leave helical grooves in normal operation.

      Reamer (In whatever caliber you desire) If you're asking about what cuts the rifling of the barrel, I couldn't help you

    • @jacobkudrowich
      @jacobkudrowich 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tool that cuts the hole is called a gun drill. The tool featured in the video is a chamber reamer.

    What was that grizzly gauge he used on the go gauge?

    • @seairis616

      A dial indicator on a purpose built sleeve. Grizzly makes some nice gun building lathes and tools.

      Probably shouldn't shoot it. If you have any doubt whether or not it's safe, then don't test it.
