I got FF7 on Christmas of 97 along with a PS1, still my favorite game to this day and I play the hell out of it on PC now with a ton of graphical mods. Xeno gets played at least once a year and the message/story gets deeper and the deeper the older I get. You associate it with Emeralda because it is effectively her theme song. Everytime something major storyline wise happens with her as a partial focus, it plays. Namely, the flashback to her creation, and storyline prior, and then her growing up scene, and the return to the ruins.
    It is one of my favorite songs as well, second only to Grahf's theme.

      I loved that arc. It's actually hard to miss if you don't explore the Underground city later in the game. And even there you can snag the golden armor for your Gears.

    Definitely one of the understated pieces in a packed and glorious OST, but June Mermaid has always stood out as a little different. Maybe because it reminds me of some of the classic Final Fantasy themes so much? Hard to say, but it's a lovely piece that if you don't head through the optional Lighthouse section, I believe is missed entirely. Great track.

      Yeah... I understand what you mean. That said, FF9 was my first FF and it's indeed one of my favorites (FF6 and 7 are my other favorites in the series... least favorite I played might be FF4 *Rydia is cool though*). Nostalgia might play a tiny bit of a part. But then, again, it's a darn good game so... I guess I was lucky it was my first jRPG.
      On the other end... I started the Xeno games with Xenosaga 3. It was my favorite thing for a while. Even when I started playing Xenogears, I still considered Xenosaga 3 my favorite. But then, I finished Xenogears, I read Perfect Works, I got more and more interested in the entire storyline (especially the bits we don't really see playing out)... and it became my favorite (the execution might be flawed sometimes, but the story is still pretty solid... and anything that isn't shown make my imagination runs wild... it's the best feeling... especially as I like to draw and write).
      I also played Xenoblade (and enjoyed it) but it didn't measure up to how I felt about both Xenosaga 3 and Xenogears.

    • @Redslayer86
      @Redslayer86 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      RadicalDreamer17 Well, IMO Xenosaga 3 was the closest game of them all to capturing the "spirit" that made Xenogears so great. Xenosaga 3 was a great game. Definitely among my favorites.
      If you've never played them, you should check out the Suikoden games. Something about SV made me get that Xenogears vibe as well. But all the Suikoden games are good. Though 1 might be a bit hard to play because it's pretty dated.

    This is Emeralda's theme so your intuition was correct. As a side note the song can be played on a jukebox in the game in which it says September Mermaid while the official English version of the song is June Mermaid. And yet 神無月 actually means October in the modern era (so it is actually October Mermaid or more symbolically Mermaid of the "godless month"). I always find it funny how they got it wrong twice.

      Saga was boring. Originally Gears was supposed to be a 5 part game with the first one being the end. It was supposed to then restart to better explain the creation of the gears etc. Xenosaga was a new project entirely because the team left square and wanted to start fresh. As far as the blade series I'm unsure I cant comment on those titles because I've never played them. also forgive my wording I meant prequels.

      No, originally Xenogears was meant to be a 6 part game with the first one being part 5. The sixth part just isn't fleshed out in Perfect Works like the others are. Personally, I think they didn't have much of it worked out and were afraid they'd let themselves down by trying to finish things, which is why they had so much info for parts 1-5 and not much at all for part 6. And I say that simultaneously admitting that Takahashi is my favorite storyteller of all time and Xenogears is my favorite story of all time.
      I actually did like Xenosaga though, until some of the things they threw at people right near the end. That and the English episode II voice acting. :/

    I actually really enjoyed Xenosaga, but I feel like whenever you create a game that's part of the same franchise as a masterpiece such as this, you have an expectation to live up to. Xenosaga just didn't have the depth of Xenogears. In all honesty, though, I don't want them to do anything with Xenogears. Even the second disc. To me, the second disc is just like... a blemish that should always remain, as a reminder to every artist who ever creates anything not to forsake one project for another.

    The plot itself was nice in that it did not focus on anyone in particular. Just when you thought Terra was the center of attention, all focus turns to Locke, and then to Celes... Also, I believe it was one of the first RPGs to make the villain succesful in everything he tried to accomplish. Overall, the game was just so vast, especially for a SNES game. This is why I say FFVII was a step back. It took everything that FFVI did well, and reduced it.

      No way. I love Xenosaga, but Xenogears story was on point. It's hard to find stories like that.

    That's a bit uh... excessive of a response.
    As for the use of other ideas in the game, I like to think that the best works of art are only conglomerations of other ideas, stolen or otherwise, that are remixed to make a new product. I'd like to say that Soylent Green probably didn't have a very strong gnostic plot about it, did it?
    Regardless, I do think Xenogears used a bit too much technobabble at times. "Miang saw that ___'s memory time axis was increased 2 to 3 fold" ... Memory time axis?

    That's cool, but Xenogears was never really Squaresoft's creation. The maker left and made Monolith to create the Xenosaga trilogy. Tetsuya Takahashi and his wife Soraya Saga felt that the first one was "too fantasy" because Squaresoft had developed their scripts into Xenogears, which they originally wanted to be FFVIII. If they don't all work together (and I can't imagine why they would), I can't see how it would feel like Xenogears. :(
    Look for Xenoblade Chronicles on Amazon. ;)

    It saddens me that this game will be forgotten and probably never be replaced by anything. It was too expensive and complex back then - disc 2 was shrunk down to mostly a text adventure because of FFVIII, on which they were working in parallel. I don't even consider a mere remaster that adds the lacking content of disc 2 anywhere near realistic. Now think of an actual, new Xenogears, made by today's game industry...

    • @octogunsalata
      @octogunsalata ปีที่แล้ว

      Why does any single industry have to grow until it's dead inside? Where's the benefit? If the added money isn't ever used; why it doesn't just stay at the good spot? There isn't *anything happening anymore* other than endlessly adding zeroes after killing off the soul of its products, which occurs more or less at the beginning of its timeline. Thereafter it just unnecessarily continues to exist forever without doing anything anymore but to increasingly burden the environment. A double loss without any gain...

    Yep that's how it goes sometimes. Chrono Break is in development hell and the Final Fantasy series has gone downhill since Sakaguchi left (the original creator of FF). The only real cash cow that Square Enix has left is Kingdom Hearts which is taking a backseat to another title in development hell (Versus XIII). The next generation consoles are gonna start coming out within the next 2 years so I doubt we'll get a new quality title till 2014. That's Enix management for ya.

    Well, aside from the somewhat ugly visuals (statics especially), FFVI, to me, did everything simply, and perfectly. As you mentioned, the customization was great. Also, the soundtrack was great. The main villain, while not as rich in backstory as, say, Sephiroth, was nice in the fact that he was just insane... for the sake of being insane. There was no explanation needed. He was an attention-hungry, power-hungry clown, which was enough to make him very believable.

    Well, I had previously played FFIV and VI (VI multiple times... I consider that to be somewhat of a flawless game) I felt like FFVII focused more on "wow factor" to impress and attract a new generation of gamers. The game itself felt like a MASSIVE step down from VI. Same with the story and customization. The characters were annoying, the game tried too hard to be "mature" and "cool"... I think the only part of the game I liked was the final boss theme lol. To each their own, though.

    None taken; I'll use Soylent Green & Id as examples; I ask Googling them to avoid unintended spoilers; please understand.
    The game directly took elements without even paraphrasing the concept; this became so pervasive from mid-point on anyone well read in classic philosophy and 20th century pop can see twists well ahead by names alone.
    The issue isn't the story; it's the excessive "borrowing."
    Again might be translation; it's not all bad of course: Fei did get laid, who else did in PS1 games?

  • @TheAlgorath

    The problem with Xenogears is the horrid translation; not to mention it stole from every cult hit in pop culture, from Giant Robots (A part of the times, admittedly) to Soylent green of all things.
    It has all the depth of big end of wadding pool.
    I suggest Chrono Cross as a similar example; less preachy, more focused, (aside the PC glut) and main characters are generally well rounded.
    Of course I have it as general consensus the Japanese version was superior, so I admit there might recourse.
