This recording is fanphuqintastic- both GALVANY & SILLS are in top form. I've had this tape for years and heard them both live many times. Now, when i listen i think to myself, "Did i really hear performances like this once upon a time? Yep- I'm one of those.

Two GREAT sopranos (o.k., Galvany officially was a mezzo) who provided opera lovers with countless hours of great singing. The Met obviously never made the most of Galvany's considerable talents when engaged there. Her Macbeth appearances were head and shoulders above the soprano now occupying that role....at the Met in March 2012.
Laurence Olivier once said the Shakespeare play Othello was like a dueling match between two actors. I think the same could be said about the opera Maria Stuarda.
Actually gmmix Galvany was a lyric AND dramatic soprano who in her later years sang Mezzo roles. In 1972 when this performance happened she was still singing lyric (La Traviata) and dramatic (Anna Bolena, MacBeth)... not a Mezzo role in site. Just saying.

What a magnificent pairing! Marisa Galvany was certainly a soprano, and regularly sang up to high e-flat, in public, even in "Aïda."

Galvany was NEVER a mezzo. She was always soprano
She was always a soprano. Singing Lady Macbeth into the mid 90s. She did take on Amneris and Azucena in late 90s but she's always been a soprano
