There are only four Ladies:Leyla Gencer,Elinor Ross,Olivia Stapp and Marisa Galvany. This video shows Galvany in passionate voice and vocal form. She produces evil emotions and her interpretation is really genial!!!
I saw her at NYC Opera back in the seventies and later in her career as Margarita in Mefistofeles. She seemed quite effective in those outings. In this, I agree, there are significant pitch problems.
Marisa Galvany is one of my three favorite female vocalists of the latter part of the 20th century. The other two are Olivaro and Gencer. (I fully realize how dangerous a statement this is!) The key word, again, is "MY."
gmmix only dangerous because the callas cultists will try to tear down every great musical legacy of the last century that didn’t involve her. Never mind them
Where's the rest of this performance? Does the CBC still have the complete film? Louis Quilico was the Macbeth, would love to see their scenes together.
her diction is very bad and she's pushing too hard, you can see her going on the tip of her toes to sing, but different from most, she's trying to sing the low notes and I give credit for this, I'd watch the full tape
John Davison Listen to her in her prime . For most people only refer to Callas in the sixties when her top was deteriorating. Listen to her Macbeth (scala 1952) or the 1958 record of Verfi arias with Nicola Rescigno as the conductor. But Callas was much more than only a voice. Take the libretto ans taste each word and if you happen to read the score (and this all the singers have been marvelling at,.....the likes of Grace Bumbry or June Anderson or Frederica von Stade) you can take dictation, everything is respected. It is never swimming trough the score. Than comes the most difficult to understand and to explain. The psychological dimension and truth she gave to each of the roles she incarnated. Opera is not only delivering top high notes and ignoring the rest, opera is story telling. If Callas would have been as dreadful as you say why then did she turn into a legend, why did people like Bernstein say that she is the bible of opera, why did a fantastic singer like Birgit Nilsson state that on a good day Callas is better than all of us put together. If she was only a product of publicity and clever managers I have to tell you that she had no manager (her husband was not really good at it) and the negative publicity went on troughout her whole career., dont you think she would have been forgotten and buried like son many of her prededessors and successors???? Beauty is something very objective and not an end in itself. Avoice is there to transmit emotions and you do achieve that with only a beautiful voice. The voices you are referring to are certainly beautiful to listen to and if you are pleased with that that is up to you. What you call ugly I call thrilling .....
+John Davison Well Verdi himself recommended that to be sung in an ugly voice. her voice didn't deteriorated quickly, she sang for a good 23 years and i don't know how this will deny the fact that she was the best Lady Macbeth. her top was not ugly, she was highly praised for her gigantic top notes with a complete command on them, she was dramatic voice after all which means it's not necessary to be a beautiful voice.
The voice doesn't really spin much below the staff, and her timing is painfully unmusical to hear. There is a very covered sound throughout the middle voice as well-frankly, the voice has volume without being interesting.
LOVE Galvany!!!

Only four ladies???? Listen to Callas first...she was the absolute lady. Those you mention were good but Callas reigns supreme
123pailin Please explain to me why? Callas never had a beautiful voice, and it very quickly deteriorated, with a dreadfully ugly top.

123pailin ENOUGH OF THE CALLAS WORSHIP
J devinson some have hearing issues you must be one of them ...
She is almost never precisely tuned. No pitch no music.
The voice doesn't really spin much below the staff, and her timing is painfully unmusical to hear. There is a very covered sound throughout the middle voice as well-frankly, the voice has volume without being interesting.
Agreed.
Vendu,mais un peu contestable...
