Links awekening, so yeah, that is indeed a cameo of Richard (he isnt the mc but he acts more of a rival but also as a childhood friend, the guy with the red get up is the actual mc) and in Richards house in Links awekening, it even plays a remade version of the overworld theme from ftftbt. I believe links awekening uses the same engine as this game as well and thats why you see alot of simillarities such as the item menu and the 2D platforming gimick being carried over.
Watching Kyle Bosman from Easy Allies do a full play through of this really made me appreciate and love this game. Finding a working copy of this would be incredible!
The little Jason-mask guys in Pumpkin Zone look a little different. Or is that just me? Also, can you carry shells in the game? I've never tried it before.

According to Wikipedia, yes. Also, Totaka's Song is both in that game and Richard's house in Link's Awakening.
