I gathered a bunch of promo VHS's from some Japanese auction site, and since a Nintendo direct is coming up, I thought it'd be the perfect time to upload them. Check out the channel for a few others.

For those unaware, “Super Mario Bros. USA” is the US version of Super Mario Bros 2! The Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 was rejected in the west because of its difficulty and lack of change, so they released a re-skinned version of a pre-existing game: Doki Doki Panic. The US version was eventually released in Japan as Super Mario Bros USA, and the Japanese Version was called The Lost Levels in the West.
Actually it’s not a reskin, Doki Doki Panic was originally supposed to be Mario 2 but due to the vertical scrolling design being too complex they shelved it and switched it out for redoing Mario 1 and making it harder then the whole DDP deal happened it that’s what that SMB2 became in Japan

Everyone's talking about Peach's dress but did you notice in the Super Mario Bros 1 & Lost Level builds, the Mario & Luigi sprites were the Modern red/green shirt & blue/purple overalls, before changed in the final game to blue/purple shirts with red/green overalls?

@Rayo El Fontanero These are Early/Final are made: At first, the cap and overalls for Mario were both in red color, like the Classic Mario colors... But this Japanese store video, which have current coloration for Mario from SMB1, was made on July 7th, 1993 and released in July 17th, 1993. 3 days after the game released.

I think Mario and Luigi’s overalls and shirt colors for Super Mario Bros. and Lost Levels (for Super Players) was inverted to match with the cover artworks. But I don’t know why SMB2 (Super Mario U.S.A.) Mario and Luigi uses blue overalls and on the cover uses red or green overalls and a blue shirt.

The 26 idiots, who disliked this video, are always notited, that the palletes for Mario & Luigi from SMB1 and SMB: The Lost Levels are fake. However is that, if they have these sprites. They'll lose them. And these sprites, that used in SMB1 SMAS Ver., will be replaced with 16-bit 8-bit Mario sprites., like an real beta.

I found the JPN version of this game at this little store by my house. Not lying, I actually have it.
The color palletes for Mario and Luigi in the original Super Mario Bros and Lost Levels games aren't the same from the final game.

I have to wonder why they called it Super Mario USA. Why draw attention to its release in the United States, especially since it was originally made in Japan anyway? A better name would have been something like *Mario no Yume* (Mario's Dream).
Many of Japanese (us) knew the game "mario U.S.A" was actually
remade of "Doki Doki Panic" already that time.
I think maybe, they thought they can't release the game as new one of Mario games but it must be released, because the game is actually good and Famicon Disc System which the playable Famicon extension for Doki Doki Panic was already obsoleted in that time.
So they need to tell what's happened the game by its title.

This is a beta version of SMAS, which is why his overalls are different.
AND the brick physics look like they're fixed in Mario 1 and LL.

@@shookums265 and boring. It was too similar to the original and had a lot of purposefully genuinely unfair parts. That's why they hurriedly reskinned another game to call the second. Doki Doki Panic was far better than lost levels anyway and provided a lot of lasting enemies and designs anyway.

Interesting why here in SMB Mario has his blue overalls but in the actual game they’re back to their original red. Guess they wanted to really stay true to those old days.

Actually, if you read up on this, SMBUSA had ORIGINALLY been planned as an SMB2 game focusing on vertical scrolling (instead of the original's horizontal). It was decided that the game was far, far too different (and that the NES wasn't as good at vertical scrolling), so the game was redesigned with less verticality (though there was still some) and remade into Doki Doki Panic as part of a deal with Fuji TV. SMB 2 was... Poorly received in Japan due to how stupidly hard it was. Nintendo America was unwilling to risk the new-found popularity of Mario and the NES (remember, SMB1 had been released only two years after the gaming crash), so they basically decided to go back to DDP and make it into Super Mario 2 again, with help from Japan. It was also enhanced quite a bit, if you compare DDP to SMBUSA.
TBustah, actually, how it REALLY is in reality is that people either had a choice of a. a reskinned Japanese game that originally was not even related to the Mario Franchise or b. a second game that they could choose that was merely a glorified expansion pack to the original Super Mario Brothers that simply had a few new bells and whistles, but pretty much played like a harder Super Mario Brothers. Coincidentally, Mario and Luigi could run and jump the same in both games, though Luigi was the second slowest grabber in SMB2(USA)/SMUSA, which is consistent with his analogue in Dream Factory: Heart Thumping Panic named Mama (yes, the Luigi sprite in that game is from a sprite that was originally female in Dream Factory: Heart Thumping Panic), so, in technicality, NEITHER game honestly deserves to be called Super Mario Brothers 2 and, if anything, New Super Mario Brothers, of all things, deserves to be in that spot, and SMB2J needs to be seen as an expansion pack to the original Super Mario Brothers, alongside Versus Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario Brothers Special, and All Night Nippon Super Mario Brothers. I say that EVERYONE got screwed on the deal in the end, and not just the people that were outside of Japan. Argue with me and I will knock you the fuck out faster than you can say "World Star."

@@fixedfunshow Except Super Mario Bros USA started out being planned as a Mario game, so IT'S the true sequel. It was just reskinned to match the aesthetics of a big "World's Fair" type event going on at the time. But it really SHOULD have been a Mario game all the time.
