    Great guide again! Moskovy was my favorite nation in the first few years after the game came out. I must have played them a hundred times, but then I moved on and haven’t touched them in a few years. Looks like a good time to dress for winter and break out the balalaika!
    I’m curious why you don’t keep a vassal or two around to eat the rest of Novgorod after the second war. Seems like that would save some more admin which can be used to help fill Religious ideas set.

  • @yavantii3615
    @yavantii3615 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Defensive ideas feel way better on Muscovy for me. Your country is essentially a continent, and it's nearly impossible to prevent the enemy from roaming through it, so getting Fort defense+maintance, land manouver, attrition etc is really great in draining an enemy without even fighing him. The policy with Religious is also nice, because it gives an additional +1 Attrition and +1 unrest on top. It feels kind of immersive seeing enemies starve and freeze to death in your large low dev provinces during the winter months.
    Bonus: Scorch earth for the full Soviet experience.

  • @bluedolphina8977
    @bluedolphina8977 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Religious has amazing policies usefull in mp for muscovy, I dont usually take defensive as first idea but with religious get get -unrest and more attrition for enemies which stacks on the attrition from defensive which makes mp invaders feel general winter. Or with other mil ideas I forget which ones you can get more bonuses to siege ability and morale.

      in theory maybe, but if you ever play mp vs someone going meta idea you will see why it doesnt work. Quantity-eco-qual is just such a powerfull combination with top tier policies on top of it, quantity makes you take less attrition, and also gives you more manpower which basically counters the added attrition from defensive, the extra forcelimit makes your army cheaper (assuming you go over forcelimit, which you always should in player wars)

      you want to use strong duchies on every nation in the game, having a vassal with 1-5 provinces is much better than having those provinces youself, and if you make 2 vassals they dont cost diplomatic relations, which is the only thing preventing me from stacking 20-30 vassals in any playthrough. remember a vassal with 1 province adds atleast 1 to your forcelimit and will build 3-4 units themself, this bonus gets smaller as the vassal gets larger tho (compared to holding the land youself)

    Wow, you are cranking these ones out!! One thing I have had issues with in the past when playing Russia is how to deal with Ottoman once you border them, but before you are getting large enough to deal with them, and how to deal with Poland if they are in a strong alliance. Even Denmark can be a bit hard in the start. Also it used to be that the strategy was to sprint for India and the Trade companies, but I guess this is not true anymore?

    Ive played about 3k hours in EU4 and Muskovy is definitely my most played nation, If you feel confident in wars I'd highly recommend going Aristocratic Ideas for your first military Idea set. Ive found that with your huge force limit and vassal swarm that Defensive and Offensive are really not necessary (even against poland/lithuania) until later in the game. Aristocratic gives you a MASSIVE 33% manpower mod that will keep you up to strength, and extra diplomat which is very useful given that you only have 2, and the cav combat ability helps a lot when fighting in steppes against hordes.

I also play on medium on Victoria 2 but I play on civilian on HOI4 but I have been playing on recruit for the major powers. Right now I'm taking a break from EU4 until Leviathan comes out and it's been months since I really played HOI4 because it's just boring for me (though I hope that the next dlc and/or update will reignite the interest)

    It`s a good guide, but I have some points on that because I`ve played as Muscovy a lot. First of all, give the cossacks the privilege for extra +25% manpower from steppe regions because its freaking broken and it gives +100% manpower instead of 25% so basically you will have a lot of manpower in the start of the game. The only province of Quasim (it might be wrong as soon as I`m playing in Russian language) will provide ez 1500 or more manpower. Second thing is that you can use your first splendor points for "transfer subject" and easily take away Norway and support independence of Sweden. So Denmark will be completely destroyed and the Scandinavian region will be divided. I strongly not recommend to go religious as the first idea. If you want to convert things, you can do it by yourself. +2% from patriarch authority, +2% from admin advisor, +1% from region edict and some few more % from decisions. Deus vult isnt that necessary because you will have a lot of claims everywhere and you will get stuck with governing capacity if you try to expand too much. Muscovy is a duchy so you will not have that much of governing capacity believe me. Instead, I would recommend to pick administrative as the first idea slot. +25% core creation time is always great. Buffs of the mercs is ok, but the most important is buff for the loans, admin tech cost and ... GOVERNING CAPACITY. I usually take some loans and force spawn first two institutions because Renaissance goes really slowly to Russia and Colonialism goes REALLY FCKING SLOWLY so its better to force spawn both of them. Second is diplo or trade. Trade ideas as Russia is op as hell. A lot of trade nodes are inland so buff for caravan power increases the income significantly and with admin idea policy gives additional +20% trade efficiency which will make you much richer. As military ideas quality or offensive. I prefer quality because you will have a lot of infantry and the +10% buff is a significant change. You will have good cossack cav and additional +10% artillery combat ability from the Russian ideas in the future and of course discipline. Quality has much better policies than offensive. If you pick admin and trade, you will have additional reinforce speed and morale recovery speed which is very important for an army to recover fast after a won battle and especially after defeat. Quality trade is additional +20% trade efficiency which will go up to +40% with trade+admin. So, in this case colonized trade company Siberia will flow you with ducats so hard that you will be able to fulfill your forcelimit to maximum and still chill collecting ducats. Religious is ok as 4th idea slot because by that time you will start expanding hard into China, Europe and Central Asia (by the way try to expand there as fast as possible because Samarkand is hella rich trade node, which steer to your Astrakhan) and you will need additional missionary and missionary strength to convert so much land. And the last, the +5% discipline icon of st.Michael isnt that strong early game. Manpower pool is small and additional 10% doesnt change much. Instead -3 unrest will be much more useful or if you expand hard, try -10 aggressive expansion reduction and relations improvement icon which is double reduction of aggressive expansion impact. Couldnt tell that story short, sorry guys and good luck. Thank you for that guide, Ludi.
    p.s Ludi did you really say "No gay"? 7:34 =D

      @@LudietHistoria Oh of course, btw not sure if you read my conclusion on the quality matter but tbh its a bit long so
      TDLR I did many more tests and found out I made mistake when doing the late game battles because tech group, defensive due to the tradition is better at winning battles but quality will make you lose less and kill more troops so its quite well balanced. In my opinion i would also pick quality in most cases but defensive is great as well
      I feel like my need to know precisely what is the best is a bit absurd sometimes though, this being a nice example lol and also sorry for going off topic. At least we both now know I guess and I can Not bring it up again

    Hey Ludi if I took Religious Ideas first, what would you recommend for the following idea groups? Should I follow the same logic for choosing between Offensive or Defensive for my second group? I don't think I'm the best when it comes to managing attrition, and considering the wastelands that you have to march through as Russia, defensive feels both useful and fitting (I mean, look what happens to nations that try to invade Russia, Defensive Ideas fuck them over. xD) I was thinking Trade might be a good one for a diplo group as I can make quite a bit of money from the Novgorod node I believe?

This gives you perma claims pretty early on the province you need for the horde missions and you can still take novgorod and neva for the trademoney, which helps a lot. If some other nations takes land from nowgorod. honestly who cares just beat them up you have 100k danes and livonia have nothing compared to that.

      You can use government reform points to increase governing capacity as well as tech (admin iirc) and one of the idea groups. Basically if you can delay gov reforms and manage with some territories then it shouldn't be a problem.

      Tbh it's a great idea going for quantity, but going offensive first means that your troops get higher pips guaranteed from generals, siege ability and discipline, which in turn means faster sieging of forts and stronger armies. You start with a lot of troops and manpower pool anyway, and can make it bigger after u get quantity later on, but securing the siege ability early on means waaay faster conquests

  • @galaktoza
    @galaktoza 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, like every Eu4 player I would like to share with you guys my current successful run/guide as Muscovy. As a note I have the Third Rome but apart from Sudbenik process that lowers chance of all rebels uprising I don't find it useful. Maybe the events are unique to this expansion, idk. So:
    1. Diplomacy: Rival Novgorod, Denmark and Lithuania. The reason being that Novgorod would for sure no longer a valid rival so you can choose between GH and Kazan. I did go with GH first because I saw Poles expanding there and I wanted to cut them off ASAP. In a war against Novgorod take land so you cut them off from Sweden and they'll have no allies. If they did ally Odoyev annex them.
    Next, tech up to mil tech 4 and if the Poles took Jagilleon attack them and 100% them (actually smth like 80+ with -20 war enthusiasm) to break the PU over Lithuania. Don't be afraid to go in debt and hire mercs (like just over 1000 ducats in debt) it is totally worth it in the long term. After that in my game they got rekt by Bohemia. This is even easier if they at war with Ottomans.
    Next, either before war with Poland or after, vassalize Ryazan. So, now you would have 6 vassals and don't forget to put them on support because they are suicidal. You can now bully GH for money and humiliation and maybe provinces.
    In the long term I stole Norway from Denmark with the age bonus. To achieve this let them take the Baltic states so when you siege it along with Sweden and Norway you will have a lot of warscore. Only Norway can be snatched with 80% warscore.
    2. Military: build up to force limit like in this video guide and attack Novgorod ASAP. Wait for tech 4 to stomp the Poles and Lithuanians.
    3. Admin: focus on admin right off the start because you'll have to core a lot and get the mil lvl 1 advisor to keep up with tech.
    First idea group should be religious because when you take the land from GH and Kazan you should be able to convert it right away. This causes no rebels whatsoever with positive stability. Second idea group candidate would be Quantity.
    For institutions develop Neva or Novgorod so it can spread quickly between these two so you can embrace it quickly, start developing when tech cost reaches +10% or +15%.
    Muscovy is easy to play in my opinion. The only enemy that is in the way is the Ottomans.
    I may be wrong but there's an event that is exclusive for Third Rome I believe (or maybe it's part of vanilla) for the Independence of the Russian Patriarchy, in this event there's a trade-off between taking a massive 50 patriarchal authority but having PERMANENT claims on whole Greece. Ofc I took this but couldn't core it in the first Otto war because of the coring distance. So, anyway, you should be also good without it if you ally Austria and declare on Ottos with the second best cb in the game(religious) or just with the best one.
    Does someone know how to take the Mandate of Heaven with Russia, what are requirements, is it even possible?

  • @myrroanrv2492
    @myrroanrv2492 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    this guide helps a lot because I got the dlc from you, I never know what ideas to choose I always choose influence but religious is better for muscovy because of all the sunni hordes

  • @Plazmatothemax
    @Plazmatothemax 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would argue on the idea groups. Yes for Religious First, but Military groups. Go Quantity. Always. Then go Offensive later on. You will always have more manpower, and when you get an economic, or an innovative, or a trade idea group going, you will be able to support 4 and 5 and 6 times more what every other nation, save ming, can afford to use, and abuse.

    • @LudietHistoria
      @LudietHistoria  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So here's why it's better to go offensive first as Muscovy. They already have decent manpower reserves and bonuses, BUT with offensive, they can actually get a much stronger army also, and still a bit more landforcelimit, with added siege ability in the early period, when there's massive lack of siege ability.

    • @Plazmatothemax
      @Plazmatothemax 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LudietHistoria you are correct on the stronger army, and siege ability, but when you complete quantity and religious it's better for your army quality as well, rather than just simply getting missionary strength and unity for your first free policy. in my case, it allows me to start multiple wars without worrying about manpower, and can go without mercenaries, keeping more money in my coffers, and also, very importantly avoiding the peasants war, times of troubles, and appearing weak to ai, preventing them from declaring wars on me. But. I will say, you're not wrong on another thing, which I don't know if you intend this. Your strategy would make more sense to say,"Go Offensive First, and go after Sweden, and Lithuania." I always take religious and Quantity so I can avoid both european semi majors and remove kazan, the great horde, nogai, oirat, chagatai, the devil, and the manchu minors. In your case it seems more implied that you'd take offensive so you could easily take out the lithuanians before they convert the orthodox provinces, the swedes since catholics convert easier, and go right into bulgaria as well.

    i usually start by attacking novgorod, the will always have odoyev in their trade league so i either annex or vassalize that as a separate peacedeal, sometimes novgorod is also allied to lithuania, in this case i annex odoyev, if they are not allied i vassalize odoyev. if i have to fight lithuania i separate peace them for a province in chernigov (for a vassal release) full money the 2 provinces at the top, and whatever else i feel like in the given playthrough (i only fight lithuania if the poland player picks the local noble, so im gonna eat as much of lithuania as possible to punish him for not taking the pu) From novgorod i take full money and every province that borders nonrussian nations, i usually dont feed my vassals to more than 4-6 provinces, i prefer making new ones because that gives a bigger bonus and makes them faster to annex. as soon as i finish my first war i declare on tver and co bel ryazan, novgorod will be guaranteeing tver and for some reason accepts the cta. i start by sieging novgorod, peace for his capital and full money and warscore, next i go for ryazan, feed to odoyev if he is a vassal or vassalize ryazan if hes not. then i go kill the great horde, peace for money and annul treaties and maybe a couple provinces, depending on circumstances, and finally i feed tver to rostov. i prefer not to fight kazan too soon because they are always allied to uzbek and 1-3 other medium sized nations, but if circumstances make it an easy target i declare, take perms core, the gold mine and cutting off their border so other hordes wont eat into them, after this i wait for truce with novgorod, attack livonia if denmark make it small enough that i can force vassalize, if i get to fight teutons as well thats great, i will force vassalize this as well and make them a march, they are 1 of the best nations to march in the game because of their powerfull traditions. so if things go according to plan around 1460 i will have novgorod city+border, livonia vassal with reconquest on denmark, teuton ortodox march with reconquest on poland/danzig, odoyev with ryazan provinces and the gold mine from kazan+whatever i get the chance to pick elsewhere.

If kazan allied with Crimea or yzbek you should just took money from them. Also you can give 1 poor province for golden horde if you want to took them into the war against Lithuania. When the war with kazan is ower, you should have anought amount of money to recruit 9 0 0 stack of the mercs, if it's not enought you can recruit a few thousands, deal truth with kazan and declare war against Novgorod when your army upon force limit.
