    For 24 hours over the weekend, Lebanon was entirely without electricity - the countries whole electricity network powered down due to fuel shortages. So in this video we explain why this happened and why it's actually far bigger than fuel and could signal a huge issue for the country going forward.

    By the way, there was also a huge fire just 2 hours ago in an oil facility in Lebanon. I get why they didn't talk about it though, it happened way too recently and they weren't going to remake the video just to add that detail but they lost around 300 000 liters of oil. Just when you think it can't get any worse, incompetence finds a way to prove you wrong.

      @@sarantis1995 is really interesting as an admin law and & econ regulation student, we are studying the energy crisis and actually, a big issue with green energy is that it is not easy to store, yeah batteries, but that’s not more efficient than tanks and tanks of gas, which can be liquified. I do agree we have to go green, but this is a issue that we do need to address as a transitory problem. The only option for stable energy supply is nuclear with 2 year stocks of uranium. All the countries with too much renewables are getting screwed right now. 70% nuclear 30% renewables with 20% backup with fossil fuels like France is the best.

      From what I've been told by someone who runs a hospital near me, they have 2 UPS devices, each able to last for 8 hours, in case of electricity cuts. I don't know if that's still the case now, though. Besides, it's not only COVID patients, every patient on life support would instantaneously die, including others who will slowly die over the course of the week, cancer patients being one of them (if i remember correctly - not too knowledged with the way cancer is treated)

    • @PiyushGupta-vx6qi

    • @lumpydark6173
      @lumpydark6173 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PiyushGupta-vx6qi Its not really a demand issue, its more supply as over the last year there has been a global underinvestment in energy markets. Its been a bad investment so people avoided energy stocks, the energy companies avoided investments in turn which lowered production.. The production increase takes months, in some cases nearly a year to get back when they initialize it. Most energy producing countries will not be able to meet demand by winter, esp in china and europe. There could be blackouts in Germany if they are not careful.

    Question: I always keep hearing that it is incredibly difficult to restart an energy grid from nothing after a full blackout, and I have read that Lebanon is in deep trouble yesterday because of exactly this. How did Lebanon manage to restart their grid so quickly? Are these blackouts not as huge concern as they are sometimes made to be?

    • @hewhohasnoidentity4377
      @hewhohasnoidentity4377 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      My preschool level understanding is that if there is an unexpected and uncontrolled shutdown of a power generation facility there end up being short circuits from the current not being equal as it crosses connections all around the grid
      As fuel supplies were reaching critical levels they knew they were running out so they had the 5-10 minutes to systematically shut down regions as needed until it just made sense to shut it all down.
      In Texas The grid operator knew some production sites were down for maintenance and couldn't be restarted quickly enough. Then has the extreme cold hit some facilities did better than others coordinating the shutdown.
      The grid operator admitted they were 4 minutes from major sections of the Texas grid shorting itself into destruction. Which really would have been another full scale catastrophe.. with the supply chain issues we already have, I don't want to go far down the path of how bad that would have been.
      So, it's all about a controlled shutdown or massive firework show from thousands of miles of power lines and substations shorting out at once.

      The thing is that there is enough fuel for everyone but it is hidden. All these problems are made up, bcuz the fuel price was still until few days ago monitored by the government. And bcuz the EDL is unable to provide long term electricity ppl rely on private electricity which is theft, last time I was in Lebanon, 1M pounds for 12h electricity... Didn't bring electricity even 1 minute. It's theft.

    • @Lapantouflemagic0
      @Lapantouflemagic0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      restarting a collapsed power grid is complex but that is the job of the electric company, they know how to do. the think is it's time-consuming because you have to restart power plants one by one, and then restore power to the grid small bits by small bits, adjusting the output of your plants every time.

    As far as foreign aid is concerned, I would say that the best way to go is to donate fuel and also assist in setting up solar power plants. Without oversight, just handing out money is a bad idea since a large portion of it will end up in the pockets of corrupt officials. While donations can be sold by corrupt officials, it’s a bit harder to take advantage of as opposed to simply handing over Benjamin’s. If a developed country can help set up solar power, it would help since it would create jobs, is cheaper to operate than fossil fuels, and even if they screw it up, it won’t literally blow up in their faces.

    The root issue is that Lebanon imports 10 times as much as it exports. The goverment has no hard currency left, the banks have been forced to buy bonds to keep the country afloat, but the banks are now close to bankrupcy and have been drained of hard currency. 50% of all calories consumed in Lebanon are imported so this will soon get really bad. Is there a way to solve it? Only if Lebanon starts producing something that the rest of the world wants to import, there is just no other way out of this spiral.
