Biggest misses for me for this device is: - No way to control the screen via the Garmin app. Seems like a no brainer as having to bend down all the time to interface with the unit when it's common place to have input devices at standing level with other sims/units is the norm. - The product is in a pricing category that I think still didn't need to be explored. The marketplace is SCREAMING for a sub 2k optical unit that doesn't drag you down with limiting built-in features to a subscription. Now that the R10 and the R50 exists, I really really really hope Garmin comes out with a R25 that fits between their two products. I'm using an older Flightscope radar system and really want to upgrade to an optical system that works both indoors and outdoors so I'm a bit shit out of luck atm.
I think they are missing a big opportunity. They should let you play home tee hero using other devices for a subscription price. For all those people out there that have PCs already set up with another device, they could be selling their software. That's more income to spend on development and improvements.
Yeah I think that their current strategy will backfire at some point. You want to drive people to your $5000 unit because of what it does in one unit and it has HTH. But they're also cutting out 2 major demographics that would sub to HTH which is people who have a setup already or those who can't spend $5000 on just the unit itself and have a smaller budget.
Not sure about some of the negatives. 1. No 4k resolution - would be nice but IMO not a big issue given that most people will not really see the difference 2. Need for a gaming PC to use 3rd party software - what does a gaming pc have that no launch monitor has? A good quality GPU. That would add a lot of cost and the additional cooling requirement would add noise. If you want photo-realistic course simulation software then you will need a gaming PC for the foreseeable future. 3. Adding course total yardage to HTH2 - small point but still a good one, not a game changer for me. 4. Other game options in HTH2. This is a good point, if you regularly have mates around to have a fun night of golf it would be nice to change things up. So a bit of a miss but should be an easy software update 5. More bluetooth functionality - not a game changer for me but a good point for improvement. The R50 is a fantastic device but is worth $1500+ more than, for example, Skytrack+?
1: Garmin golf software is really poor. They put so little into updating errors or improving interfaces. Just look at any Garmin golf forum, nothing but feedback that's totally ignored for years. 2: You still need a PC to use GSPro 3: The output from the unit is not 4k 4: Most importantly, it's not accurate. Spin and flight shape are way off. 5: It's way too bulky vs GC3/QUAD. You'd look like a right tool pulling it out at a range.
Can you make us a detailed video on what we can do with all the data supplied by the R50? Can we export the data to a spreadsheet? Can we create different sessions where ee could delete the bad shots to a proper AVg’s of the different fields? If all that data is there we should have access to it. Is there club gapping tool, like in some other softwares?
I agree that this could be a mild revolution in launch monitors although I’m sure other companies are looking closely at this and you probably will see a response from them through 2025. I your pros and cons are fair. I would probably put baseline cost as a negative. While you don’t have a computer with the R50 it is still a 5k unit so it will be a hefty price for most golfers. For the price you can get a Bushnell Launch Pro with club and ball data and a fairly good gaming laptop that can be used, well as a laptop.
Hi Gabe! As you have logged extensive time with the R50 I have to ask…how is the unit handling short chip shots of 5-10 yards? Thanks and keep bringing out the great content Sir!
6th way it comes up short is because it’s so short. The backbreaking lean over to view and and adjust during gameplay will help chiropractors in the future. They need a telescoping screen.
It's not that bad. I'm 6' and 66 years old and using the display is no issue. I have more issues with my back just playing golf than I do binding over to touch the screen.
Personally I think they killed themselves with a 5K price tag. It’s in a weird price point for people who want golf sims. I wanted the R50 at first, but after doing more research, I’ll just spend 1,500 more and get the Protee VX instead… seeing as you still need a gaming pc to run third party software anyways. Just a better option for my left handed friends that’ll come over lol.😉
Gabe, you should do a video playing some holes on your home courses using the Garmin R50. I would be curious to know how accurate the representation would be. You know those Carrollwood courses inside and out.
Gabe - curious, what are the specifications for the on board computer within the Garmin R50? I have not been able to find the specifications anywhere. I will say, I have been enjoying the R50 a lot!!
Hey Gabe, another good video. I have one question that hasn’t been answered anywhere. When playing home teehero is it possible for me to set a view that shows the entire flight of the ball from the players point of view? I really don’t want to be sitting behind the ball flying through the air and landing on the fairway somewhere I wanna be able to see the shot shape that resulted from my swing from where I stand the same way I would on the golf course. Is that possible on Home Tee Hero?
Gabe: You missed one major factor it falls short...You cannot set the lofts for each club...this makes it almost worthless for the range work....not all 7 irons etc at @ 31 loft, mine is 35 loft..See if you can contact garmin about this..I sent them a email, hope I hear from them and you..Great review...Ali
Not sure why you say this? It doesn't use the loft to calculate the ball flight or loft. It measures it as it leaves the club with the high speed camera. So all range data is accurate because it is measured not calculated. You can change the name of your club to Something P970 7i 35 if you want and it shows up in the display. Not sure why would you need loft?
4K resolution would have raised the price by a lot right now. It would make sense for this to be a hardware refresh at some point, however, Garmin's launch monitors have not shown any history of iterative hardware updates.

Frankly I would still want to hook up a tablet to run it than using their touch screen. What happens if the touch screen breaks? Now you're down 5k because the touchscreen is dead.
I bought one and just tried it for the first time. I don't know if I like it. I seem to hit the ball higher, further, and with more backspin outside compared to what just about any launch monitor reads. Maybe I'm just not good at hitting off of a mat. Home Tee Hero is cool because I can play courses I grew up on that I haven't played in decades. Although, having a 10% distance penalty out of the rough and a 20% distance penalty out of a fairway bunker is annoying. It would be nice if you could change those in the settings. Some of us are members at courses with real range balls 😏
@Evan_Rodgers you think a real range ball that is hit 1000 times a day, for months, is going to perform like a new prov1?
@@DaveFogel most of the CC’s using prov1’s replace them quite regularly. Part of the reason people pay 80-100k to have a membership there. My buddies replaces there every 4-6 weeks. And they only have 200 members.
I thought most monitors had range ball compensation
The impact vision looks super low quality for some reason
A bit grainy. But I’d say pretty on par with Uneekor and Apogee. None of them are crystal clear.
Compare it to the GCQUAD or Trackman.
These videos are pointless otherwise
Did you not watch the video where I compared it with the GC quad and it wouldn’t read the shots? This comment is pointless.
@@LetsPlayThru Do you think Garmin built it so it interferes with foresight and trackman to prevent head to heads? Do you know will two gcquads work side by side? Surely a trackman would work as it's not close to it?
@ def not purposefully. Doppler device like Trackman should work. I plan on trying it.
nobody gives a crap what you think
Gabe it has BLE (Bluetooth low energy) not sure i have every used BLE but maybe some wireless keyboards or speakers can use this version of Bluetooth.
