I grew up with cricket in the 1980s in Australia. Through that era the West Indies had not only the best team(s) of the time, but one of the (if not the) best of all time. Amazing players. And if Garner, Roberts, Holding, Croft, Walsh, Marshal and Ambrose weren't bad enough....then you had to bowl to Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, Larry Gomes, Richie Richardson and Jeff Dujon who could plunder the best bowling attacks like no one's business. It really was THE golden era of West Indian cricket.
But mate your Australian team of 2003 was also legendary .... Couldn't watch these legends playing but i can say i watched the great glenn McGrath and spinner like shane warne ...... Big fan of your 2003 team , love from india ....
sunil gavaskar has 14 centuries to his credit against that west indies. incredible stuff. and without proper protection. just imagine Joel garner bowling to gavaskar
Biswajit Patra gavasker was slow bt he was the best test batsman !! 14 century against this west indies nd back thn pitches were more quick ... i didn't see him batting live bt after learning abt him ... I just amazed !!
Gavaskar hardly got any hundreds against these four greats. Most of his hundreds came pre 1978 before these four came together or when they were away for Packer series :-)
Saibal Chakraborty Just check on wikipedia page of Sunil gavaskar. His debut was in 1971 and out of the 13 centuries he scored against West Indies he scored 7 of them after 1978. So which means he did score them against these 4 great fast bowlers.
This Legends did not come out from a cricketing system they are naturally talented even Malcolm Marshall as well even today if being asked to me to name the west indies team I cannot but I can still name all the ten players of that era...respect from India
Awesome foursome!!!! Those were the days! West Indian's at their very best...they were a treat to watch and i am Indian, mind you...kapil,kirmani and gavaskar on my side. And i have been following cricket since the the early 70's.
Holy hell, Michael Holding has aged well. Garner didn't actually look all that quick on the screen but batsmen knew differently. The bounce he got from his height and his extremely upright action was amazing - anything on a good length was coming through waist-high at least - and he bowled as straight as a ruler and could ping in a yorker at will. Not the man you want hitting you on the foot.
Compared to the other 4, Garner was NOT as fast. But He was bowling at an awkward height. He was fast and got a lot of bounce. He was 6'8" with a high arm action. Once Gavaskar told during an interview that his hand would come from above the side screen. So there was visibility issues when he delivered the ball. Garner was very difficult to hit.
NAZAR AHAMED WRONG...WI DOMINATED THROUGHOUT 1980s and half of 1990s IN TESTS....IN ODIS THEY JUST WON 1975 and 1979 WCS..BUT IN TEST 1980-1995 THEY WENT 27 TEST SERIES AND 15 YEARS WITHOUT LOSING A TEST SERIES

Wow, what a frightening sight just seeing them bowl, one can never see such bowlers again on a cricket field, can't imagine the plight of batsmen when such monstrous bowlers charge at them.
Sunil Gavaskar - scored centuries with the World Best and Fierce Fast Bowling and mind you, there were no body gaurds that time, only the helmet which also came later in the game. I am sure NO ONE of the CURRENT GENERATION can match to what Sir Gavaskar did and infact how all the batsmen faced such bowling in the yester years!!!!! Loved this bowling attack of West Indies with the Ready to Kill spirit, which is lacking in the present day world.
Sunil Gavaskar rarely faced all of these bowlers together, only time he faced them was 1983 WC where he didn't perform well. 1971 (4 centuries in WI) no one was present among them 1976 (2 centuries in WI) One against Holding and Roberts and One against Holding 1978 (3 centuries 1 double century in India)( Godly tour against peasents of West-Indies only Holding played one match) 1983 tour in WI (one century full quartet was playing) 1983 tour in India (200 great innings against quartet)
The whole world know them the feassome four and here comes GAVASKAR with single and double centuries, centuries and centuries.... Respect men deep deep respect.
Gavaskar was a fantastic player but a check of the stats shows he wasn't too successful in the only series where he played against this attack. He made runs v the WI when these guys were with World Series Cricket though. Not doubting his ability, he is IMHO one of the most attractive players to watch.
i am 23 years old i have not seen marshall bowl,,,,but my uncle used to say...never has been a bowler better than marshall...and I still believe him to this day

Fearsome 5 (including Marshall). While it is not Virat's fault that he does not have to face such an attack now - but this will be the reason he will never be considered a great. Gavaskar was and will remain the best batsman ever, and "luck" does play a role. His elevation to greatness is a direct consequence of the attack he got to face, i.e. he played at the right time.
Yeah, in your mind. He is good, but not great for the reason above. For the sheer quality of attack Gavaskar had to face literally single handedly, he is beyond comparison. Also pitches and rules have now been tweaked to batsmen's favour. Today a fast bowler cannot even bowl a bouncer, without being no-balled. During the days of Fearsome 5, they would intimidate the batsmen. It used to be an even contest between bowlers and batsmen, today it is just a batsman's game.
@Money Maker: In God we trust, all else bring data. I'd love to see any video / match where Sobers faces the fearsome 5 and comes out on top. Similarly for Bradman.
Why are we often told to listen to our elders. When I sit with my father and cricket conversation triggers, he tells me about WI cricket, how fearsome their bowlers were. I did not know anything about West Indies cricket until my father told me. I got to know about all of them just because of my father. He also mentioned that Joel garner being called as Big bird. Massive respect for fearsome 5. You will always be my ideals.
That could explain the lack of bowlers, but what about the batsmen? Nobody seems to average more than 40 in the current side, and different skill set and physique required when comparing when comparing batsmen to basketball players.
After seeing this, I feel Sunny Gavaskar, who have scored, 14 centurirs three double centuries, against them, That too without helmet, In fact in that era, every cricket playing country had two to three fearsome fast bowler, and Sunny stood against them, score centuries, again that too without helmet, If today's world, These bowlers would have been there, all these stalwarts like, sachin, virat, ponting, lara, cook, would not even touch, 5000 international runs Fearsome Foursome, salute to u. flash so why isn't he playing for India now if he is better than sir VVR? You guys are very slow in understanding things. need some quality education system.
flash bro..... even Ravi Chandran Ashwin and Anil Kumble have scored a century but that doesn't mean they are great batsmen. it's about being consistent in what you do. Manish Pandey most certainly lacks technique. he is not a sound batsman. his T20 stats will already suggest you that....

Rupan Chhabra but gavaskar era u should know ....the golden era of fast bowling.....and the batsman is ill equipped with no helmets and other safety gears....just think our poster boy viraat....teleport to that time.....he will piss the urine in his pants.
I don't think so. Any modern player if born and conditioned like the way players of older generation were, then there would be no difference. Virat has compensated for it with much better striker rate, more innovative shots in his arsenal, more athleticism on field/running between wickets etc. Then again you would have to ask what would Sunil would have done if he was born in 1980s. You cant really compare eras. As for Sachin, I rate him for longevity (200 tests/493 odis) and versatility (equally devastating in odis)

imagine coming off an over of 90mph Garner bouncers at your head constantly ducking and on the last ball getting the single to stay on strike for next over, then seeing Groft with the ball going to his marker and that cycle happens all day. i would never bat again if that was me 😭
When people decide to talk about the batting success that Gevaska had against the West indies, what they always seem to forget is that, he was never able to help India win a test series against the West Indies during that era and that was the key, the West Indies were a team, not just individualism. good for Gevaska and his individualism, but that's as far as it went for his team Gavaskar didn't score shit against the big 4. Most of his 13 centuries came against weaker WI pace attacks. He scored 147no against a big 4 in Guyana in 1983. In India in 1983 he made 2 centuries with Roberts mostly injured and Gar
Geol garner (rhe big bird)was the ruthless of them all And malcolm marshall was the most feared of them all trully the golden era of west indian cricket
Imad Ahmad watch India south Africa series to see contest between bat and bowl .both sides has best batsman on planet and still they getting all out on 130 and 135 run
We'll never see the likes of this happening again, 4 top world class fast bowlers that bowled at 90+ mph. You've got to feel sorry for the batsmen of that time, any runs made against these guys would be worth many times over in today's day.
Now imagine going up against these guys during an era where very few batsman wore helmets, let alone helmets with visors, no arm guards, no thigh pads, no cups.
Look at the impact these guys had on a stodgy dull world of cricket in those days - Clive Lloyd assembled a culture that crushed the world of cricket for season after season. Pure passion, strength and focus under the genius of Lloyd proved unstoppable. Imagine opening the batting and having to contend with a six ball barrage of 90 mph+ deliveries from the "hitman" Andy Roberts, he seemed a short man compared to the rest but he scuttled in at pace and whipped an arm with a fury that saw many a man bruised and battered, with sticks atumbling behind him. Six balls later and the maestro, Michael Holding, is about to batter you some more and then "Croff" at first change to batter you even more again. Holding is a cricket legend and an Ambassador for humanity - listening to a test match without his insight and wit, via commentary, is a dull game. The W'Indies then were a power house that changed cricket - and society for that matter. Joel Garner, aka Big Bird, was the also a menace to society - at 6'8" (over 2 metres) he delivered the ball from at least 15' or 4.5m high and sent down his immaculate yorkers with a vengeance that few bowlers have ever matched nor batsmen mastered, imho the best best bowler of all time. Viva Cricket
Being the fastest bowler in the world is the nearest thing to being the heavyweight champion of the world. Sylvester Clarke turned up at the ground in the late 80’s. He looked like Sonny Liston. Scary man
My West Indies All time 11 Gordon Greeneidge Chris Gayle Vivian Richards Brian Lara Clive Lyod(C) GariField Sobers Dinesh Ramdin(Wk) Michael Holding Joel Garner Curtly Ambrose Malcolm Marshall
Quick Question: They were called foursome fearsome because they were hitting the ball hard and the batsmen will get hit on their body. Can they be as destructive as they were against batsmen of modern era? batsmen with much more protection that can boost up their confidence?
Look at the records of bowlers who debuted in mid 80s, late 80s or early 90s..they all were great artistic talented bowlers who used to give nightmares to batsmen despite having protected grill, helmets and what not. Be it McGrath, Warne, AKram, Waqar, Murali, Donald, Pollock, Ambrose, Walsh, steyn(an exception) etc. To pick guys when they have no fear of getting hurt with great economy rates is the real deal. It was good that these WI's fearsome foursome of mid 70s to mid 80s frightened batsmen because they had no protection with attitude to kill and hurt. They were good, really good but not real greats like those I mentioned.
@@Aman-nk5uq Aman I think if you asked every one of those bowlers you mentioned if they would place themselves on the same level as the guys from that seventies WI side they would all bow down and say no. It would not be false modesty or humility but genuine respect.
Its funny, Garner is always considered the least feared of the lot and yet, statistically, he's better than all of them. He's taken more test and ODI wickets than the other three and has better bowling averages too.
Perhaps the finest, and the most dangerous, fast bowling lineup in the history of the game. How I wish I would have been in those times when these "fearsome fours" were wreaking havoc on the Cricket pitch.
Awesome. Gavaskar the batsmen with correct defensive technique and patience who has faced these fast bowler very well. Better in many terms mainly on defense and staying at pitch.. than sachin.

imagine coming off an over of 90mph Garner bouncers at your head constantly ducking and on the last ball getting the single to stay on strike for next over, then seeing Groft with the ball going to his marker and that cycle happens all day. i would never bat again if that was me 😭
😂 😂 😂
Hats off to Sunil Gavaskar who played all these bowler without helmet and scored a lot of runs.
They are all very big and solid men, beamers and sixes! Fearsome.
SHUT UP ABOUT BEAMERS !!!
No mention of Malcom Marshall.
This is 1979 just before WI tour of Australia!
I see Das
Nuron666 surely the best
Marshall was voted the best of them all
Graham Hardy - he was good. I lost interest in cricket after the 1980's. Back then there was some big characters.
When people decide to talk about the batting success that Gevaska had against the West indies, what they always seem to forget is that, he was never able to help India win a test series against the West Indies during that era and that was the key, the West Indies were a team, not just individualism. good for Gevaska and his individualism, but that's as far as it went for his team
Gavaskar didn't score shit against the big 4. Most of his 13 centuries came against weaker WI pace attacks. He scored 147no against a big 4 in Guyana in 1983. In India in 1983 he made 2 centuries with Roberts mostly injured and Gar
Cricket was different back then...West Indies please come back
Geol garner (rhe big bird)was the ruthless of them all
And malcolm marshall was the most feared of them all trully the golden era of west indian cricket
That was real bowling.
Now a days, there is no contest between bat & ball.
Imad Ahmad watch India south Africa series to see contest between bat and bowl .both sides has best batsman on planet and still they getting all out on 130 and 135 run
The Indomitable World Champion.
We'll never see the likes of this happening again, 4 top world class fast bowlers that bowled at 90+ mph. You've got to feel sorry for the batsmen of that time, any runs made against these guys would be worth many times over in today's day.
Sunil Gavaskar to Four horsemen of Death: I dont ware Helmet
.
Eik Maratha Lakh Marath. Jai Bhavani Jai Shivaji
Now imagine going up against these guys during an era where very few batsman wore helmets, let alone helmets with visors, no arm guards, no thigh pads, no cups.
great great bowlers they are truly legends
Great.Fearsome 4. Loved it.
Now they don't have such bowlers
I'm surprised no one died from that kind of fearsome bowling!
I was anticipating the name of Malcolm Marshall and then the name of Colin Craft popped out.:)
Marshall only got in the side coz Croft went on the rebel tour.
Being the fastest bowler in the world is the nearest thing to being the heavyweight champion of the world. Sylvester Clarke turned up at the ground in the late 80’s. He looked like Sonny Liston. Scary man

Quick Question: They were called foursome fearsome because they were hitting the ball hard and the batsmen will get hit on their body.
Can they be as destructive as they were against batsmen of modern era? batsmen with much more protection that can boost up their confidence?
shivam u missed the point.
Colin Croft was basically the Ivan Drago of pace bowling
golden era....❤️❤️
Its funny, Garner is always considered the least feared of the lot and yet, statistically, he's better than all of them. He's taken more test and ODI wickets than the other three and has better bowling averages too.
Youtibe recommended me this video😮😊
WI & PAK, home of natural bowling legends.
Never before never again!!!
Great bowlers the cricket world will always say their names ✌✌✌✌👍👍👍👍👍👍
I love this players
Perhaps the finest, and the most dangerous, fast bowling lineup in the history of the game. How I wish I would have been in those times when these "fearsome fours" were wreaking havoc on the Cricket pitch.
Awesome. Gavaskar the batsmen with correct defensive technique and patience who has faced these fast bowler very well. Better in many terms mainly on defense and staying at pitch.. than sachin.
