    You're suppose to disconnect your injectors so you're not flooding the engine full of fuel or pull your fuel pump relay, and disconnect the distributor to prevent spark. Then while cranking the engine you're suppose to be a WOT(wide open throttle). The minimal compression is 135 on these engines, which means this one does not meet the standards and needs new rings. Nominal pressure is 184 per cylinder with a variation of 28psi.

    Anyone who sees this video do not use that engine restorer, I used it on 2 cars, and within weeks I had oil leaks all over the place, the product swells gaskets and causes them to fail.

    Maybe you will have to watch the build and see what goes in this civic,it will be around 400 to 475hp range and i will do a 1/4 mile run before and after along with dyno runs. im not a big fan of the H swap but i do love k-swaps and boosted d16 vtec's built of course

    You don’t have to disconnect the fuel pump fuse and open the throttle all the way and start the engine by bypassing the starter?

  • @clipofthedayyup4907
    @clipofthedayyup4907 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    well that is a start to a compression test find the problem cylinder but there is more to do for diagnosis. there are steps to determine if it's a valve issue. or piston and ring issue. as well as a leak down test. did you cover that in another video?

    How do you remember where those plugs go back after? Also why does it say to disable the fuel injection system and the ignition system when conducting an engine compression test in the ASE exam materials.

      Too prevent Sparks & Fuel Marrying each other on this critical test & to see "Cranking Compression", not "Vehicle Running Compression" @ this time.
      C.Compression is 1st
      Running Compression is 2nd
      Majority of Professionals "Butt Holes pucker up tighter than a snare drum on Engines that aren't a 4 Cylinder because it is time consuming when you conduct those Tests properly ( 30 minutes to 2 hours ) , especially if you have one of those 6 or 8 cylinder Sideways engines where the plugs are near the Windshield. Now thats the Mechanics that's still using the Good but Old Fashioned Compression Testers....Oops I forgot, the last test is way more time consuming than a Compression Test, it's called a Cylinder Leakage Test.
      Check this out , Smart Technicians don't even use Compression Gauges or Cylinder Leakage Testers anymore. These guys are laughed at but it only takes them 10 minutes or Less to conduct each Test.

    was the car in this vid a vtec motor and if so did you experience any future problems with the motor due to the use of the Restore? I've heard mixed feelings about using it with the variable timed motors. Thinking of using it in my sons '04 civic with the vtec due to oil consumption. I called Restore and they told my to try 1/2 the can first then drive 200 miles if no problems turn up add the remaining 1/2 can. They said the vtec can be a bit sensitive . saw your vid so I thought I'd get your thoughts. Thanks

    to turn it over in the compression test is it just the same as turning the key to start the car?

    I have a question I ain't real savy on cars but I'm learning..i have a 99 civic 215+miles..can bad compression cause oil to shoot up slowly but surely into my air intake houseing even doe I've changed my pvc valve ...clearly aware oil should by no means be traveling in the air intake breather hose connected to the head cover ...do u might shineing some light?

    • @CodytheCarGuy
      @CodytheCarGuy  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't have to but i do so if there is a blown head gasket between cylinders it will show up and if the other plug is in then it can hold pressure

  • @therandomtester9561
    @therandomtester9561 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You did not mention pushing full throttle while cranking, so I suppose you didn't..
    Looking at your pressure also leads to believe you didn't as you want to see numbers around 150-180, or maby more on a good engine. Even 2-strokes have around 100-120!
    Doing a compression-test on a petrol-engine, that part i crutial. Although your results are impressive, they are sadly not very reliable because of the throttle part...

    • @therandomtester9561
      @therandomtester9561 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** You are correct. You will not get true compression, and thereby reading, if the engine does not get as much air as it can. Petrol-engines have throttlebody that restricts airflow, thus creating vacuum in intake unless you open throttle wide open.

      Late to the party, but yes, you would just need a remote starter switch. It's the easiest way to do it without a helper.

    1) Nowhere did you tell your audience what the Compression Specs. are supposed to be for this Engine
    2) You didn't tell them that their Ignition System & Fuel System is supposed to be "Disabled" on ALL vehicles on Planet Earth.
    3) Didn't tell your Audience that a Heavy Brick or Accelerator Depressor Tool should be on the Gas Pedal so that the Engine can Inhale as much air as it can .
    ...Now it's okay to crank the Engine while listening or watching the Gauge increase 4 - 5 times.
    I can tell that you are a good fella & mean well but I'd cringe to hear you ive Instructions for the Real Test " Cylinder Leakage Test" especially on 6, 8, 10 & 12 Cylinder Engines.
    This is Old School, like me, I'm considered Old. Born 1954.
    Year 2001 & Later, Big Dogs can cimplete a Compression Test within 3-5 minutes, even on a 12 Cylindee Engine.
    Pico Scope displays Color Printout of all Cylinders displayed in Vertical Buildings that show the customer a scale of 0 - 100% of each Cylinder.

    One of ATS other Beauties is the ESCAN LapTop BlueTooth Scan Tool ( EScan Elite )..This Jewel will test all of your Catalaytic Converters with just a drive around the block, again will show you Grades of 0 % to 100 %.Eberybody knows 90 - 100 % is Excellent.
    80 - 89 % CATS = Good
    70 - 79 % = Fair. ( Wearing Out )
    60 - 69 % = Poor
    Less than 59 % = Ridiculous
    Customers won't debate or wonder aboutyour Diagnostics when you're utilizing Big Dog Computerized Printouts. It's already Year 2019.

      Ye, fantastic advice. All viewers of this tutorial should definitely go out and buy a $1000+ scope to do a compression test on their motor. It's a great investment. When you're done you can use it do level out that uneven leg on your table in the second kitchen in the west wing of your vacation home in the Hamptons. "Money well spent" you'll think to yourself ten years down the road when you realize you still have it.

      From what I know if you put oil and the compression still the same then the problem is not the piston ring, is the valves.
