- Front diff uses a hypoid gear set - Redline light weight shockproof
Rear diff uses a regular pinion gear set, 75W90 GL5 redline in there.
Center diff/transfer case uses a GL4 75-90 fluid with a friction modifier.

I’ve had this done this week and I can say I’m quite happy: I had that slipping problem and now it seems to have almost gone, I’d say 80% of it.
My 320d xDrive has 130.000 km

Can I bend a small brake line that will make it through the fill hole to the bottom of the transfer case??? You could have more control than pushing or moving a soft flexible or bending hose? Of course I'll still hook that tubing to a rubber hose then connect to my vacuum pump... I'm going to try it on my 2015 BMW 328d xdrive. I'll keep everyone posted. Possible video and pictures coming....

The x drive transfers seem to take a beating I don’t know how bmw can say lifetime, I’ve done loads of x5/6 with as low as 32k on them and the oil is black and burnt out causing hesitation and a faint thumping under acceleration, 37k f30 320i today and it was the worst I’ve seen, they’ve dropped the ball with a lot of things in recent years.
its annoying for sure. they use pretty much the same case for everything from 2 liter diesel to 4.4 turbo gas too.
Thumping as in pulsating kind of feeling with powerful delivery?
@@izaya8986 yes all the customers I’ve had come to the shop thought they had hesitation from a slight misfire and to be fair it does sometimes feel like that but it’s transfer every time

What are your feelings about using the Redline GL-5 75W-90 for the front diff as well as the rear? I'm preparing to change all the driveline fluids and only found your video because I was trying to figure out how to reset T case adaptations with my Foxwell scan tool. The weather is rapidly cooling in my neck of the woods and I'd rather not wait a week for Lightweight Shockproof to arrive unless the downsides of running the same fluid front and back are significant. The climate where I live gets down to 20F most years but never below 10F. Every few years I pull a 2500 lb trailer cross country. Thanks for your time.

that should be ok. just make sure its a hypoid oil for the front as that gear style is different.
I do prefer redline shockproof typically (lightweight for the front diff at least). and MT90 for the tcase.
@@OvalboreCars No worries, thanks for getting back to me. I did proceed with that gear oil as it has the sliding lubricity for hypoid gear sets. We took a 1000 mile road trip after the change, and the driveline performed as required. Yesterday I changed the engine oil which gave me an opportunity to confirm no leakage from the front diff drain plug.
I'm pretty hard on this car, loading it heavily at times and also using it to pull trailers cross country. It's the diesel "truck" of our household fleet. I'm ok sacrificing a little MPG to get an oil in there that can handle heavy duty.
Ive heard the transfer case will collapse if your wheels has more than 2millimeter difference between front and backwheels… i want to buy the xdrive f31 2018 but i dont want to spend 6.000 on a new transfer case if it breaks… insane this massprod car has issues like this
tcase will collapse if you look at it wrong (or dont change the fluid)
@@OvalboreCars i bought an f31 2018 with xdrive last saturday. Fully equipt with m sport, the xdrive feels like new so hopefully nothing happens… but i will for sure change TC fluid before winter

Do you only see a transfer box on the Xdrives?
Mine has started to shudder at low RPM cruising. 1k-1.5kRPM is when it happens.
Wondering if it’s the transfer box / x drive being weird.
no, X drive and earlier Xis all have transfer cases.
@@OvalboreCarsmine shudders at low revs too around 4/5th gear mostly around 30mph. My dsc light has come and and been diagnosed as a TF case problem. Will I need another case to fix the problem ?
Have you had any issues with these fluids since this fluid change was done? Curious for both diffs and T-case. A lot of info online mentions to only use OEM BMW fluid, however I’m curious to know what your experience has been long term?
Im a former master tech and BMW is wrong in a lot of cases about what they spec IMO.
I just did my fluid change, used the fluids you specified here. Do you believe that the fluid spec should change based on whether it’s a diesel vs petrol? I have the 440i xDrive with the B58. I know the diesel offers more torque, does that change the specs of what should be used?
Would it be wise to add some Liqui Moly MoS2 gear additive in the T-case? These things take a beating on the X-drive F-chassis cars. Any thoughts?
I would not use additives, just use a fluid with a good additive package like the redline.
Hey can you comment on wear on the output flange shaft spline wear will be reduced with this fluid change or whether a loctite preventative maintenance will sort this?

Sorry - Ive read of certain models of xdrive been afflicted with output flange shaft wearing on the splines due to excessive vibrations. I'm trying to figure out whether just a fluid change is sufficient to prevent this but I have a feeling it's not. Ive heard Loctite is a suitable remedy as it prevents the splines from moving against eachother due to vibrating. Just trying to figure out what maintenance I need to do on my vehicle to give it the best chance of lasting hassle free :p
@Scotty shall I change my 2015 BMW X3 F25 transfer box and both diffs oil? As I been not to change it as it likely to make it wine and noisy is this correct?
I changed mine . No issue . The oil looks horrible . Do it is cheap and easy .
Is the mt-90 viscosity too high for the transfer case? I think it calls for 70 o believe. Mt-90 working out okay ?
MT90 is ATF based, viscosity is closer to 70. That being said, the heavier the better for longevity within reason as long as the friction modifiers are ok. the only reason MFRs swapped to ATF and light weight oils is for fuel efficiency. they do not care about longevity.
I stand by everything said in this video, and I have never had a single fluid related failure in any car I have worked on.
Also it states that GL-4 gear oil is needed for the rear differential is this correct? People are saying GL-5 is too corrosive
rear diff is spec'd as GL5.
Typically GL4 isnt needed unless you have a Hypoid gear like the front diff.
Can you use the lightwight shockproof on the transfer case too?
I would not personally try that.
Will those fluids work for my f30 n55 xdrive? Also is 1 bottle needed for the front, rear, and transfer case?

@@OvalboreCars We offer our customers both options. BMW calls for 3.9 hours - r&r transfer case and turn upside down to drain on bench. 😄

Bmw spec is crap? I Had 85k on my f30 335i xdrive with "Bmw crap" and the fluid in the transmission and diffs looked amazing still. Was shocked. Could have gone another 50k. Just saying. The transfer case was different however.

Did you just drain the fluid out of the “fill plug?”
There is a separate drain plug on the other side of the transfer case. It is lower than the fill plug.

no, there are no drain plugs in these because BMW sucks and wants to sell you a transfer case.
I am only here because I need to do a T case oil change, but I don't know the exact amount of fuild I need. And I don't want to buy extra because it's expensive.
My car is a '13 328i, 3.0L 6-cylinder. The xDrive coupe version.

if I've only done 35k in 8 years, would you still recommend changing those diff fluids? or is it safe to guess they're not degraded enough warranting a fluid change yet?
absolutely. 30K interval would not be unwise IMO.
Bmw spec is crap is sometimes okay if i gain 1000s of dollars of gas milage money i wont mind to change my fluid every 50k...!! And im no eco mode guy please trust!
Is is the transfer case same as the diff? I had a indy shop do the fluids in the rear and front differential. Does that mean that my transfer case fluid got changed as well
No it is not the same the same thing as a differential
