Pasqual chugging along. He was hungry for milkies. The sound of him suckling, so sweet.

I don’t think he got much on the 1st chugging session though! The nipple was folded over!
That has to be some of the best sounds, I agree! Drinking and crunching their fruit!

With all due respect, I wish the kind family who turned Dora into the Foundation could see her now. I know Dora's human Mum was pretty choked up about giving her up. But to see how Dora is thriving now- clutching onto Holly as if she was born to her- it really brings home the fact that no matter how cute these babies are, they're not for us to keep as pets. Thanks for all that you do- it's really not to be underestimated. You go through so many great efforts to help the monkey unlearn human behaviors and become a monkey again. Now, Dora will be living her best life with her own kind. Thanks again for sharing her journey with us.

There r many of us who wish they could donate at least something for all of the amazing things u do for these little orphans. With this ridiculous pandemic, many people r just not in a good place themselves to be able too. Thank u so much for all u do to give these babies love, an a second chance with a family. It is such a selfless thing to do. An I can’t say it enough! Thank u! 🥰😋

Bless your hearts at VMF, I have watched the difference between how you handle monkeys like “Floki” and how other channels handle similar situations as they yuk it up and shows ignorance and their love for the almighty dollar ! Whereas VMF show their love for the vermet and their well-being and a station which I won’t name has tried to get laughs out of a baby monkey that will die !!
It amazes me that YT will let them Operate and yet gives the good stations a hard time, once again “God Bless” !! I’ll just say that this other station operates out of Cambodia and leave it at that !!

I absolutely just love what you guys do and have watching since the first season and while I wait patiently for the weekly video I usually rewatch some of the other seasons videos like this one and others of course and one thing always stands out that I have always wanted to ask about but haven’t is about Bobo & Hawk always there at the watching over the at the integration stage when the babies are introduced to their new moms. That whole operation is a miracle in itself that it works and then you even have 2 bandit/wild vervet monkeys that come to every one to watch over you guys and make sure the babies aren’t being harmed...but at the same time I think they know you would never harm them because they never seem on guard near you guys and are very relaxed, they are very observant animals and smart they see the tender loving care you guys give the babies and sick or injured adults. Sorry i got off subject I did find it odd but also cool that the Moms in the intro cages never seem bothered by Hawk & BoBo right outside of their cage where their brand new baby is, whereas any other bandit even gets near the vicinity the Moms go ballistic and start alarm calling and jumping at the bandits but not with Hawk or BoBo and I’ve even seen them groom the babies through the fence, maybe I’m wrong and there have been fights and I just missed them or there not recorded.
My question is what makes the troop moms more trusting of these two bandits who watches them while getting their babies which usually makes the new moms even more on guard but they still allow Hawk and BoBo to hang around. What do you think the reason is for this? Also it’s so interesting to me that Hawk and BoBo are committed to being there for every integration, I think it’s like their entertainment, I can imagine them sitting of to the side betting on which mom will make it the longest, who will eat and run, which mom will get a cuddle in the fastest, what baby will be the favorite ....lol!
I think it’s adorable, sweet and very smart of Hawk & BoBo to do what they do and watch over the orphans and get their much deserved happily ever after!! ❤️ 🐵

I understand you have a staffing shortage and can't get video of everything, but I hope you start getting us views of those first couple days again when you can. I've been following this channel for quite a while now. At first I was very fascinated by their different faces and expressions, but recently I've been amazed by the length of their tails! They must be amongst the longest in the monkey world. Also think the tail must have quite strong muscles to hold them vertical sometimes when they walk. Maybe a Lemur tail is longer.
Whatever, it's a great video and I agree with all the other commenters about the wonderful work you do. Looking forward to the next one.

So at 15:54 when Floki or Dercules come up and jump onto your lap and look at you and come closer are they asking for grooming or comfort or nurturing from you? And withholding that nurturing because they are being weaned from human touch or human comforting them to get ready to not have human contact at all...is this part of the preparation to wean them from human nurturing?

Do you suppose that part of Hollie's attraction is that she has come in after two other moms? Norah entered first, and Dora was terrified; then Acorn joined them; still no chemistry. But now Dora is more adjusted to the sight and sound of an adult vervet mom and Hollie enters. I can almost imagine Dora thinking, "I'll grab *her*--she looks pretty good and she'll protect me from those first creatures that came into the cage." However it works, it's always beautiful to see.

    • @VervetMonkey

possibly its not a number written in stone, its more to do with behaviour and being allowed to clinmb off mom to get milk, so naturally you will get infants that mature quicker than others, but generally 3 months is the period of time female monkeys hang onto their babies and dont let them wonder very far.

I'm almost positive this message will not be seen by the foundation but I just wanna throw it out there anyway. The integration with the baby and Acorn, there was the moment where Bo Bo and her baby stopped by and I noticed that our baby didn't flee from her but actually moved towards her. So my thinking is if you had placed another more welcoming baby with this one it would probably have sped up the babies being comfortable with Acorn.

About Floki, in another video I thought I heard it said that Floki will not be released into a tribe because of some type of neurological problem that has been detected? What actually seems to be wrong? His rehab seems to be coming along rather slowly, as by now his muscles should have compensated for the removal of the femoral head even if he was an adult, and he must certainly have started developing a good amount of scar tissue there too but with removing a femoral head and having it heal into a pseudo hip joint as soon as the muscles constrict it is effectively working as a joint and he should have a much more normal movement at this point even without structured physical therapy. has he seen the vet again and been xrayed to check for some malposition or other problem with healing or is this why you suspect a neurological problem? And if so, is it the nerves in the extremity or brain damage you are concerned about?
Often if this surgery is done with an animal that has had a hip dislocation or fracture that has healed but they have had difficulty with locomotion over a long period when very young they will not start walking correctly on their own even once healing is progressing as it should. Most often this surgery is done with an animal shortly after the trauma and they often never spent long being force to favor the leg or walk in a much different way to get around and so as the hip heals their body had a good muscle memory of how things should move a function and hey quickly return to that function. We do, however see animals that were injured relatively young and had to spend a good period of their early development with abnormal motion to compensate for the injury and they literally have no memory of how to walk in any different way. Of course, there could also be residual nerve damage in the extremity from initial injury or one risk of the surgery is that a nerve can be damaged. It is not impossible that eventually the nerve will heal and some or all proper sensation restored but, of course, that can take 18 months or longer and you really cannot say it wont ever return unless the damage is actually at the spinal cord, or its been at least 3 years. Even in humans we find regeneration even after teh 3 year mark, but primates tend to have a much better ability to heal and regenerate.
They also have a very good way to figure out how to compensate for an injury, even in their infantile months. I don't really know how old he was when injured but he is far from old so there is a question as to whether his body walks as he does as essentially that is how his brain thinks he should move because that is the movement he has established a pattern for and has no real muscle or neurological memory of anything else. He is still young enough and been sued to enough handling that he should actually be a good candidate and benefit from some intensive Physical Therapy that is not hard to do, to reteach the proper movements and get in the stretching and orientations of the joints in alignment to facilitate a better gait and a better ability to climb. I am not sure how much rehabilitation your vet does and if he can help or not or if that is a problem of cost - that I can understand, but there are several good vet physical rehabilitation sites you can google that will have layouts of progressive manual physical rehab that can be performed, and how each step is done, from working with extension and range of motion in the extremity to games that will progressively rehabilitate his extremities. Or if you have issues finding what you need and would like us to suggest a program our rehabilitation department would be happy to help and develop a program for you to try with Floki.
Mind you this will not be an overnight fix and can actually take several or more months and it will end up giving him a great deal more human contact then is the normal course of your program, and could make integration therefore, if rehab works, more difficult due to his age and his contacts with humans through the hands-on needed for physical therapy process. However if you have already made the decision that he cannot be released into a troop due to his condition those issues may not be a deterrent to doing more intensive rehab with him. I also know too, that due to Covid you are exceptionally short staffed this baby season but there should be a lull in babies and integrations which might be a time that people would have free time to work with him for periods of 20 minutes several times a day and it would not even need to be the same person, but just doing the same things. And it may never get him to the point where he is fit enough to be out in a troop but if it does, the exceptional delay in integrating him may not be a total negative as we often rehab and integrate primates that have been kept as pets or display items for several years. And its not where he will be at risk from strange humans coming up to him in the wild, even it his has caused him to have along time in contact with people.
If it does not give him enough ability to move and climb to be in a troop in a sanctuary situation it may improve him some and any improvement has to be something that will improve his quality of life. Of course, we don't see him 24/7 but it seems like i have not seen him even attempting to climb and it would be nice, even if he ends up living as a medical care case, if he could do such things as would be much more normal for his species. And better ability to do some of the more normal things that a primate would do, such as climb, would improve his ability to socialize which we all know is exceptionally important to these guys. Just being able to rehab his muscles in his lower extremity so its not as contacted as it appears to be and to build the muscles back up and get his body reprogramed to alternate the use of both legs when running instead of hopping would, if nothing else make him look like a more normal monkey to others then hi hopping about. That should definitely be doable, because if you watch him, when he is moving around a a very slow walk he will use the lower extremities separately in opposing locomotion, stepping forward with one foot and pushing off with the foot behind, its just when he needs to move any faster he resorts to the two legged hop, at lease that is what I have seen on the videos. That can be due to probably a combination of things, the muscles of the injured side are atrophied compared to the good side, and that not greatly improving as he is not really doing anything to strengthen the side that was injured as e is compensating for the weakness using his other side and therefore the injured side is not getting the strengthening work it needs. There could also be some lack of sensation too. Have you tested to see if he does actually know where that foot and leg are in relation to the rest of his body? Since when moving slowly he can stand on one while stepping forward and then push off with teh other he has to have some sensation in the extremity and must at least of a general idea of where it is but he may need help in getting that better ingrained into his brain so that muscle memory can end up taking over. The faster an animal moves, even a human, the more extension and flexion an extremity has to do, so if muscles and tendons are contracted from teh fact that for along time he did not use the leg and/or favored it, when he starts moving any faster than his very slowest walk that leg cannot effectively stretch and flex as much as it should (limited range of motion) and so he resorts to hopping where it appears that his good side moves him and so he just used teh good side to power forward and the injured side as a balance, like a cane to keep him from falling over. Good manual passive motion exercises followed by massage can actually solve that pretty quickly.

He has a neurological problem which has nothing to do with his legs, hand and eye co-ordination are not good his head is slightly tilted to the side and his balance is not very good - other than that he gets around find, but would be picked on in a troop as he would naturaly become the lowest ranked - so he will be put with Cuddy and a few others in our special cases section

@@VervetMonkey Do you think he received a blow to his head when his leg was injured or this is how he was born and perhaps is why he was injured. I feel very sad about him as he seems like such a sociable little guy and he really loves his interactions with all the babies and is very protective of them - like he is an older sibling, I hope that just one companion is enough social activity for him

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My gut feeling is he was involved in a motor vehicle accident where his mother was killed and he sufferred head trauma, he was then taken and a rope tied around his leg so he could not escape which pulled the leg out of the socket and alot of pressure put on the other leg at such a young age the bones have not yet grown fully into place, he had never recieved medical treatment until he finally ended up here, so that would be over a year he has been living in these rough conditions

Bill Smith, I don’t know if this helps but when Kyle was there he explained one day why all the vermets where scampering up to the highest branches was because they (vermets) sounded a snake call (alarm) so they must learn it from members of the troop !

Quick question: On a recent episode you guys mentioned Floki wouldn’t be sent to the a regular troops like the other babies. Is it because of his mental or physical and also being a male play factor?
I’m not questioning your decision at all, I know you guys always do what’s right for the monkey I’m just curious.
I could watch Floki run and play all day long, seeing him hop around enjoying life brings me so much joy as well!! He is my absolute favorite because he’s a survivor and living is his best life!!
Thank you for all you guys do for these precious sweet animals! You guys truly are angels on earth!

Why is it sad? They have each other to play with and branches to climb on. These monkeys are happy cheeky monkeys. They don't have balls or other toys in the wild and this foundation works hard to provide them a life that is as close in comparison to their own wild habitat environments as possible.

    • @MouldedKnights

Wouldn’t having a ball or another toy continue the humanization? They wouldn’t have them in the jungle.
