I agree that if the thumb wear is no fun that you won’t like it. I can do it all day long without it hurting at all - maybe I am a Neanderthal - so I love it.

I've grown accustomed to it now. Granted I did take some sandpaper to the edges to shave and the worst parts a bit. Still, there are days where I wish there was a better way to actuate it.
My biggest gripe isn't really the button, looking back... it's about the slippery smooth handle that really offers no great place to firmly position your hand to actuate the button optimally.

I love how honesty your reviews are I own a ultratech and man I honestly despise using it because of how strong the spring tension is I'm the same like you I have it just to have it and look at it

I'm very happy to hear that! Some people are uhh.... not too fond of my criticality, bluntness, and honesty. I find that those people tend to be the ones who dumped more money than they ever thought they would on the knife I'm ripping to pieces and they hate to think their investment may have been a suboptimal one.
      Happy to have you here!

i agree, the button is definitely stiff and sharp at first, but give it some time and it definitely loosens up! i've had mine for a few months and its already hugely different. also you can take some high grit sandpaper to it if you really need to. thanks for the review!

The thing about the button is if someone else opens it they might screw down too tight and that makes the button a lot more harder to use. That’s why using loktite is needed and you screw in to barely be tight and the adhesive takes care of the rest. Your knife and finger will thank you and not require being oiled nearly as much as misfires are rare due to less pressure on the spring. Hope this helps someone. I unfortunately bought a brand new UTX-85 and they had the serrated block pin backwards so the button kept getting jammed and I really wasn’t wanting to send my brand new knife in knowing I was intelligent enough to either fix it or know if I really needed to. But the button was on point till I put it back together. And even a little extra torque on those screws makes it more difficult. Get some locktight and put those screws in to bare full tight. Definitely no extra torque

No dude , the switch will get ya eventually and tear the skin , lol. They break in though and you will figure out lower down the thumb by the joint near the tip of the button is less painful but yeah you’re exactly right . I took some 2000 K paper to those edges and it changes everything with a slight polished edge look . It does look cool , kinda worn . Makes it way better

These are great for ease of use . Have to have at least one or two and a stitch or even the little 70 is super cool . I took the clip off mine because, well , it’s kinda ridiculous to use the clip for any small knife imo . Same with BM Osborne .

I had a cheap otf and it was fun and cool but for me I don't think the otf is for me. My state is working towards legalizing auto knives and honestly for me an auto in my collection is gonna be a classic Italian stilleto just for the class and cool factor. Great review Corey 👍

    • @thepracticalblade9013

      Hey Jeremy! Thanks!
Yeah I really don't know why anyone would carry one for anything other than the novelty. One handed operation used to be a good excuse, but plenty of folders have that now. I appreciate then for what they are but as a knife, they lose to... like literally every other knife type.

Quick deploy for safe defense. That’s why I’m considering one.

  • @ricardocampos3383

also, theres nothing novel about this knife. theres a ton of utility, i'm surprised you dont get it

    • @thepracticalblade9013
      @thepracticalblade9013  ปีที่แล้ว

It's not that I don't get the utility, it's mroeso that I don't get why anyone would choose this over something else.
I'd wager peoples' most prominent argument for this knife would be the one-handed operation, but almost every folder on the market has that these days. Every other folder, also, pretty much is guaranteed to have less blade play, better ergonomics, etc...
It's still a knife and it still "cuts stuff", but it's really hard to say this beats any other knife out at anything other than "being cool".
      TO ME, anyhow.

the ultratech is viable for self defense and has the “cool factor”. no need for the “it’s for real men” mentality. it’s a robust, well built, and COOL item.
it cuts. it’s cool. it’s good looking. i don’t use EDC knives for anything too taxing, so i can get away with less practical knives anyways.

I don’t have claws or anything of the sort, but really?
I guess if you have toddlers hands it could be an issue, but just barely.
As far as usefulness goes, for me an OTF is the most useful pocketknife out there.
Being able to be dealing with something (standing on a ladder installing a ceiling fan, as an example) and be able to take the knife out of your pocket, open it, cut whatever, close it and return it to your pocket, one handed SAFELY without any gymnastics, is where an OTF shines.

    • @thepracticalblade9013

Ah, yes, the standard "your hands are too soft" complaint, ignoring that not everyone in the world has callouses all over their hands and that being a requirement to comfortably operate a knife isn't exactly optimal.
Thanks for the grade a response. It's comments like these that make me not miss dealing with you people anymore.

      @@thepracticalblade9013 ah don’t get butthurt.
Where I come from, if you get clowned, that means you’re ok and well liked. If you never get made fun of, means you don’t have a friend in the world.
      Clowning aside,
What I said about OTF/DA design knives is absolutely true.
Super easy and safe to deal with if you only have one hand free.

@@Daddy53751 I can respect you not digging deeper into the original comment. One of my few qualms with the "knife world" has been 'big manly men' who like to overcompensate, and the "soft hands" comment gets old after a while.
Thanks for the clowning and being reasonable after I got defensive.

@@thepracticalblade9013 I don’t think it’s just the knife “community” it’s just the internet in general, and all the communities in it.
(Wanna have some real fun, check out the gun community or politics)
Now the “military community” like I said earlier is IMO, the funniest and easiest to understand. DARK, DARK gallows humor, nothing is sacred, and the amount of viscous clowning you receive is directly related to how liked you are for the most part.
(There are always exceptions to the rule)
I live by two simple rules with the net.
      1. Never take anything TOO seriously.
      2. Never say something you wouldn’t say to someone’s face.
Now #2 has its own issues, because as you well know, people will say the most outlandish things that they’d NEVER say to a grown man’s face, and that part can be particularly aggravating, but as long as you grit your teeth and keep chanting rule #1 like a mantra, you’ll be ok.
It’s the main reason I don’t make content, but just consume. I’m not obligated in any way to participate.
BUT, I did learn how to completely disassemble and repair a front loading washing machine!!! (Would’ve been $2000 to have a repairman do it)
You’re fun, so you just got my SUB🤘🏻

I've seen some impressive abuse videos. The Blade play inherent to OTF's throws me off, though.

I ended up lightly sanding down the edges of my button and it's infinitely more tolerable.

    I never said that.....
JK!!!!! I agree microtechs are fun but your fingers get tired of actuating the button after a few times = oh great it's snappy but I can't play with it that long!
Great review glad someone said it!!

I will start by saying this, these knives are illegal where I live… now onto the comment… I wanted an OTF just to play with in my house, never going to leave my house. I bought a cheap clone, for the sole purpose of playing with it. I know I said the “C” word, but I can’t bring myself to spend that kind of money on a toy that will probably never even be used to open a package.

I was leaning towards going that route until I stumbled upon this one used for a good price on the secondary. No shame, especially if you were basically just gonna fidget with it.
