2024 F1 SINGAPORE GP RACE by Peter Windsor

  • The deft touch of McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris was on full display on race night in Singapore - from his perfect start to his equally-perfect finish. This wasn't a race filled with high drama; indeed, there were no Safety Car interventions. It was, though, a stunning display of mechanical and athletic virtuosity. Lando was a couple of seconds ahead of Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen in the opening phase when he responded to his engineer's request to "open a five-second gap" by quickly creating an 18-second cushion. It was breathtaking to watch. Max duly finished second; Oscar Piastri made it a McLaren one-three; and George Russell finished P4 for Mercedes, ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Peter Windsor in this video looks back at a memorable night in the city that never sleeps.

I'm not convinced by Lando's performance today. YES he had the pace and a very dominant win. But having three incidents in one race that could have ended his race instantly is too much. (hitting the wall twice and almost making it impossible for Colapinto not to crash into him after lapping him all while having 25+ seconds buffers not needing to take risks and drive on the edge)
It will cost him wins sooner or later.

What?? They don't have AC in the garages in Singapore?? That's criminal, it must easily feel like high 40s. South East Asia humidity is a killer, far worse than mid east dry heat, which isn't bad at all late in the year usually mid/high 20s.

Dear Mr Windsor, I love your F1 analyses, but I don't agree with your Lando Norris race rating. After he won the sprint to the first corner and a few laps into the race it was quite clear that only Lando could beat himself - and he nearly did it twice! He clipped the wall twice. It doesn't make sence to risk so much when you are in a comfortable lead. What would you have said when Lando had crashed out of the race in the leading position? I was wondering that we had no safety car phase in race what Singapore normaly brings. Your lead must only be so large that you can cover a possible undercut. Everything beyond this isn't smart (in my opinon) in terms of risk management.

So now F1 has another monopoly with respect to who should or will win the race, McLaren be it Lando or Oscar. Everyone else is next best loser. Because if you don’t win a race you have lost it.
Great to see Lando be rewarded for his hard work and loyalty to McLaren. Great that McLaren proved you can win without Newey but there is little doubt that their car can trace its turn a round to inspiration by Newey.
If the trend continues then next season will be a dud with respect to racing with McLaren doing a version of Red Bull 2023.
A twenty two second win over second is as it was in 2023 not even remotely interesting to watch. At one point the difference was 28 seconds and almost lapping 10th place. Was hoping history would not repeat itself so soon but writing is on the wall.

Seems like that with the aftermath of Damon Hills championship in Williams '95 compared to Villenueves' in '97 and McClarens' 98 and 99. Sebs' RB in 2013 fell off a cliff, you can even say the revamp from the Nigel Mansel championship in '92 to the revamp design in '95.
