- McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris sits on the pole for the Singapore GP...but Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen has bounced back too: the leading championship protagonists will start alongside one another on the dramatic street circuit, with the two factory Mercedes on row two (Sir Lewis Hamilton ahead of George Russell). It was a bad day for Ferrari, however, with Carlos Sainz crashing out of Q3 and Charles Leclerc exceeding track limits on his only quick Q3 lap; they will start P9/P10. In this video, Peter looks at the laps composed by Lando and Max and at the other key elements of a tension-wrapped Saturday evening in Singapore.

Exactly. In the same cars, Max or Lewis would have blown Lando out of the water by at least .5 of a second.
@@spilot1016no chance, lando was clearly on the limit for the car. There is no way oscar was a full second off the pace of the car.
@@askeladden450 I think both of you have a point. Max and Lewis both performed better than either McLaren driver. Lando's lap was around where the car should be on a normal but not great lap and Oscar had a poor last sector resulting in a bit of a subpar lap.
@@98MTBiker George also had issues with tyre warmup throughout the session and was still less than a tenth behind lewis. So i don't think lewis was anywhere near the limit of the car. Max on the other hand surely was.
Leclercs tyre blankets had issues, thetes details you miss sometimes in these Peter. Thats what Leclerc expressed and theres also a video of his mechanics having to replace the wire going to the front tyre blankets about 2 minutes before he went out for his lap in q3.
If that is the case this is very unfortunate.
Would think a team like Ferrari would have the systems in place to keep track of blanket temps & set off alarms if they deviate. (Assuming some lapse was made if this is true as the blankets should retain heat fairly well for a brief period of time)
@@fragdude well it looked like they were trying to fix it alright but, obviously not enough in the end. But given Leclercs q3 lap was 6 tenths slower than his q2 time, that car wasn't in the right window, and obviously the lock up in t1 because of cold fronts which led to the track limits so, just a snowball effect right at the critical moment, Ferrari can't seem to string together good weekends for more than 2 races.
perez back to reality
Lando was disappointed to see Max 2nd :D
He looked annoyed
Hopefully he takes the lead and wins the race to support his title defence
Afraid more like !
Look at how proud Peter is today; he has high hopes for his child. lol..
Beginning of the year we thought LEC had bad stats starting from pole.
What's the opposite of perfect? NOR has never held the lead from pole for a single lap... He gained it back sometimes of course, but bookies are going to love that stat.
Peter saying Lance looked pathetic had me rolling 🤣🤣🤣
Did it have you rolling? Is it any kind of surprise? If you’re “rolling” with that typical of a one liner then idk what to tell ya but that s*** has been obvious for about all the years he’s been in the sport. Wake up.
when?? where? I didn't catch it
@@myvishan then you are oblivious. Pay more attention….
@@NotYourEverydayTrav It was funny due to the manner in which Peter said it. What a sad comment from you. Grow up mate.

Max: “No comment” 😂
Good to see Lando an Lewis agreeing with him.
@@hanskuijsten2380 Would've been perfect if Lewis and Lando followed track, statement made!
They can edit onboards with delay but not press conference... Ted swore in a cross live that didn't workout...
During the post quali interview, Hinchcliff asked Lando how he was feeling during his pole lap when he was behind in the first sector. His response was very informative...he said he didn't worry since he knew they were quick so he left a little margin. Shows how mature of a driver he really is.
Great qualifying today.
Also shows what a rocketship the McLaren is, that you don’t have to be on a perfect lap to get pole position
@@makkert if that's the case then where's the other driver? Why is he not on the front row?
@@sleepypixie8828 I don’t mean to discredit Lando. Or Oscar for that matter. Both are great drivers. But that doesn’t mean Oscar can’t have a single lap that isn’t optimized. Or that the McLaren isn’t a car that has a window to operate above the other cars currently. The suboptimal sector 1 , the confidence of Lando that he could make up for it, the eyetest of the onboard camera and the experience of the past races tell me that.
@@sleepypixie8828 Norris is in his prime, Piastri in his 2nd year. That´s not rocket science. Knowledge of the Pirelli tyres is which was evident yesterday.
@@makkert yep that I agree
Ah now, Peter... Nico also put in a time before Carlito's "moment", and it put him on row 3 for tomorrow's race.
Indeed an exciting quali session! Can’t wait for the race this evening 🎉
OMG. Peter twice admitting that sometimes, longer corners work better and on this occasion occupy both front-row slots. I thought his short-corner obsession was absolute
It’s all about the tires.
Me too! "Smoothness", and "suppleness" seems to make up the difference 😉
there is a video out there somewhere , that features Hulkenberg ,.. i believe it was Nico driving the Aston Valkyrie ... and you really get a sense of Nico's talent ,.. he's definitely not human 😅
Seriously bro, how this guy doesn’t have a top drive is mystifying.
@@Enzoblueblood Comes down to driver"s manager
@@POVRR3 I don’t know enough about the inputs from his manager, I just don’t know what more Nico needs to do to prove his class. I mean, there’s Lance embarrassing himself almost every weekend and Nico putting a freakin Haas in q3. Soul crushing bro.
Hulk appreciation!
Max - driver of the day by a large margin. To bring that car to P2 was absolutely magical.
Lol
His Q2 lap was superb.
I prefer when Mr.Windsor had data to show us.
Lando saw Max on P2. He looked decidedly glum.
Wanyela wena
This man walks around just covered in adverts
Great review as always
Pérez back to reality, Franco within thousands of Albon and without the updates. Did you rush through this review?
Bearman and Franco immediately proving that you can judge a driver only by his teammate. When your teammate is Magnussen or Sergeant, you can look like a god. Put a couple of rookies in there, and Albon and Hulk don't look terribly special.
@@dereksbooksyep, it's why some drivers people think are amazing, then others are "washed". Think we know it's dumb to judge drivers, never know what's truly going on.
The legend, Lewis, strikes again!!
Lando starting on pole? So he’ll be P3 or worse by the end of the first lap.
Cheers.
Word of the year for me, “superb”!! Thank you Peter.
Lando have to keep 2 world champions behind him tomorrow. High pressure for him
So good to have sober intelligent comment, informing one about the race, in contrast to the content-free, hysterical shouting of the commentators during the race.
Tricky for McLaren Piastri is far enough up to challenge for a podium and not really far enough back to prevent an undercut at the 1st round of pitstops......Norris will have to fly solo
It's interesting to think was Ferrari's pace just for qualies, because they both showed podium pace.
Max strikes back… he will win tomorrow.
that mclaren looks sweet
Peter there’s no doubt in my mind that you’re a Lando fan! Your so incredibly happy and positive which is absolutely fine, but don’t think it would be the same if it was Piastri on pole and Lando in 5th 😂😂
Piastri may undercut Lando at the first pit stop.
Piastri fanclubs are grasping at straws every race he doesn't perform well enough😂
Oscar fluffing qualifying again. That's his achilles heel and needs improvement before he can fight for the championship. Singapore is usually a bit chaotic so let's see how the race goes.
I don’t think max has the car to beat lando tomorrow. I know this isn’t in max verstappen but he should go on the defense and race for 2nd place tomorrow. Just accept it and do everything you can to maintain that spot rather than wasting tires going after lando. It would feel like a win if he gets out of Singapore with a second. This is a notorious bad track for him and he was expected to lose a chunk of points.
He will be P1 first cover the rest is history
You clearly don't know Max! He doesn't settle, the only way he comes second is if he really can't trick or beat the person ahead.
Lando is the one who can overtake Max in the standings, so Max will go all out to try and overtake Lando early in the race
he will probably be racing very aggressively
@@kevikirui mean hes defended and not been aggressive since atleast spa, idk which max youve been watching the last 2 months

When you watch the press conference after Quali, at the end, when they stand up you can hear Max say '...... My balls...' 😂 someone here who heard it better?
I'm paraphrasing - he followed up his earlier comment about a problem with his voice with "no problem with my balls"
@@drcr4ne thanks!
how did max bring that tractor into P2? also lando with another great qualify lap.
“Tractor” the car was great for him and he said it on the radio. It’s not set up the same way as yesterday. Same with Mercedes. I
@@mapleleafkay9824 because max redbull car has been garbage the last 7+ races. yesterday was pure drama. then today perez is 13th and max is second. the mercedes has been steady the last 7 races. russell and hamilton have both won races. and mclaren at the moment the best car. so yeah max put that tractor on P2.
@@elecovanrenss1352 only Max fans come up with these terms. Max said the team had done a good job and the car had improved compared to last week. I'll take his word over yours anyday. You want to talk about a tractor, think Hulkenberg putting a HAAS in P6.

@@dykelusyoli5978 everything i mentioned are complete facts. and if max said the car has improved does not mean that it suddenly will be a race winning car. just that it is better then in baku. but did max got any new upgrades?
Does Red Bull only use one setup? because they can only seem to have 1 good car each weekend, setup worked checo and not max in baku and now the setup worked for max and not checo in singapore, don't they split it?
What’s gonna be Landos’ position at the end of lap 1 …. I say he’s gonna keep the lead for the first time ….
I'm not sure, if Max yolos it into the first corner, because it's beneficial to him if they both DNF, Lando might back out a bit because he's got more to lose and I won't criticize him for that.
He's not a brilliant starter, his car is faster and he CANNOT afford to go off, so generally that means he'll trend to a low risk start, so slipping to p2 would se likely.
Good race ….. led the race from start to end …. Amazing drive … hats off …
Still on lap 58/62 when I’m writing this, so let’s see what happens in the next 4 laps …
Great to see you on location. You should offer a contest: win a trip to spend a race weekend with you. That would be an amazing once in a lifetime experience.
I think Peter thinks that RB full name visa cashapp is ridiculous for f1 team, so he continues to mention it.
Peter is it really necessary to call it a McLaren Mercedes, Williams Mercedes or Haas Ferrari? We know what engines they have in them.
It’s just old school I guess. I like it, feels fancy 😂
Is that Max,s best sector's against Lando's best sector's?
Cold tyres in the equator?, what are the Pirelli’s made out of? Sustainable rubber 😅
Tyres come out of the warmers at 90-100C I believe; doubt the tropics are quite that hot.
@@JC-lu4se Right now the sun is closest to the earth on equator (and thus to Singapore). From what I've seen in the past my guess is the tyre warmer have issues because the outside temperatures are too hot for them to work correctly.
@@MrHerbalite Possibly but folks saying the ambient temperature in Singapore is hot enough to adequately heat the tyres seems a bit off to me.
Great to see both Haas in Q3!
What? Kmag is in 14th...
Is the DR redemption arc over?
It would be cool that all the drivers only speak in single word answers over the radio tomorrow. Affirmative, Roger, yes, maybe, no and darn when they crash.
Will McLaren let Oscar through to win the race if he's faster than Lando?
yep
No? Why?
He won't be anyway, so...
Why would Oscar be faster after qualifying nearly 0.5 second slower than
Lando. Also, he has to pass 2 multiple world championships before McLaren have to worry about that and Lando is the leading championship contender so why would they hand Oscar the win?
@@Andy-oc3ewRacing is different to qualifying. Lando is fast but his race craft is lacking.
@@sturod2016 completely disagree, Landos racecraft is far better than Piastri, his problem is with his first 2-3 laps in the race as he slowly brings his car up to speed, this improves his tire deg rate, but often results in losing position and putting himself under pressure for the rest of the race. Lando doesn’t panic when he falls behind he drives his own race and taking care of the tires is his strategy. McLaren have let both drivers down with poor strategy decisions, many of the issues that Lando has been blamed for is down to poor team decisions. Piastri still insists on racing every lap as fast as possible rather than using any tactics, he over cooked his tires again last week in the first stint, luckily Lando was able to hold up Checco enough to allow Oscar to maintain track position after the pit stop. Oscar is good if he has open air to race in, but when it comes to any kind of conservation he is lacking.
Perez street circuit specialist P13! 😬
Yeh after a crash another stellar performance for the street circuit artist. Give me a break
Tired of the perez street king narrative as well, every time he finished ahead of verstappen was verstappens fault, not perezs ability
Perez fans: "No comment." 😅
@@BillyboyoNoHesi Except for Baku, perez is straight up just a better driver in Baku than Max and history shows
@@playboisharty2840 my impression is bad luck or poor setup is the reason
This year was a bad setup and bad maybe bad form but it’s hard to tell
2023 they were pretty much even iirc, 22 verstappen dominated, 21 he was leading until the tire failure
Come to think of it, perez doing better this year was kind of anomalous
The odds of there being a first lap red flag must be so high, and the odds of a first lap collision must be through the roof. Part of the reason why is the fact that Perez has parked his behind right in front of the nose of Ocon and has a returning-from-ban, retiring, pointless Magnussen on his shoulder. That dude can risk as much as he wants and he only has to worry about his shenanigans costing more in damage than the cost of buying out his contract. If Perez doesn’t gain at least two spots at the start he’ll be stuck behind two Williams cars including a rookie, so if he somehow plays it safe then he will be starting the race with the same pace as a rookie in a Williams negotiating a perilous track. Then you have Hamilton vs Verstappen right from the start. You could win a lot if you bet on a clean first lap and they somehow pull through lap one without a yellow flag.
Workman like job ha
Lando: gud qualifier
Oscar: gud racer
Max: gud everything
Lando is also a "a gud racer".

Any regrets to come from Lap 1? Golden Boy Lando ain't perfect.
Yuki deserves the Red Bull seat. He has done more then Gasly or Albon ever did before they got the Red Bull seat.
F1 needs a new boss at the FIA
Las Vegas has effect on local business but they have lot of night trade must not be worth it people stay at track facilities...
Ferrari should have been on pole
Any team which has a car crash during qualifying should be penalised. It's ridiculous how one mistake can ruin a qualifying session for everyone.
There have been crashes in the past that ruined qualifying. This wasn’t it. The red flag stopped the timer at 8:04. When the track was clear the timer started again, the teams chose to stay in pitbox and only went out around the 4 minute mark.
How in the world did Saniz crash?
Cold tires. Significant bump just after the apex of the last corner. Loaded then unloaded rear suspension. Lost adhesion on rear axle. Massive oversteer. Huge opposite lock. Massive snap in the opposite direction as he regained adhesion with full left lock.

MAYBE the Mercedes and redbull were set up for wet racing conditions during free practice. MAYBE the teams altered them to prefer a dry race for the qualifications .
Cold tires for letting one car pass in 30C heat and 80% humidity?
Yeah I don’t think so Peter.
Tyres come out of the warmers at 90C+. 30C is cold.
I'm assuming this was recorded on a phone, I thought the microphone sensitivity was way better than the studio recordings. I can't be alone in this, so I think it'd be great to up the volume on the home recordings.
