    honestly, American pet stores are insane! I went to one when I was on vacation in NYC and they had cats? in a super small space and betta's in these cups that could also be used for pee samples. It was such a weird experience and I'm kinda glad that pet stores in The Netherlands don't have such low standards.

      It’s so horrible. That’s how all the pet stores are around my area too (though some don’t sell animals, luckily). Years ago it was made illegal to sell dogs in pet stores because they weren’t treated well, that should’ve been a clue to not sell any animals, so many of them are still mistreated but people only really care about dogs. Tank animals like fish and reptiles might be fine if they actually took good care of them, but they don’t bother and a lot of the animals die or get sick but aren’t really treated.

    On the topic of pet abandonment (kinda random, but hope it's an interesting read for some): a couple years ago, some neighbours moved out of their house, and so we were asked by the landlady to go check out the house and make sure there's nothing out of place. This, was during the winter... the thermostat was turned off in the house, and just left on the counter was this tiny fishtank with half-frozen water, and a Pleco just by himself in this bare tank (no rocks, plants, filter, or anything) sitting under two inches of ice. We brought him home, thawed out the tank... he started to swim about, and so we made a trip to the local Petsmart to get a better tank and everything else that was missing from the poor fellow's experience. Dog, as my father named him, soon got a few friends as well (we went and got guppies). He grew roughly an additional two inches (was about 4" when we found him, iirc) over the next couple months, and soon got a lil too much for us to handle (the tank filter was struggling to keep up with his... erm... bowel movements...). He was given to someone we trusted well enough to take good care of him, but I still hope he's doing well... Dog was a funky lil fellow, and I'm glad to have seen him improve so much from that poor state those people just left him in.
    (edit: best part, was treating him to a cucumber slice or two every once in a while - he loved those)

    Apparently my 9 year old cousin may be being allowed to get an axolotl. I'm really concerned about this because of her age and the fact that her reason for wanting one is because its cute. At this point my grandparents are feeding into this despite recently getting rid of their large tank due to structural issues. My grandfather knows a lot about fish but they've never had an axolotl. I've even heard my cousin talk about getting other fish which I know you shouldn't do with them but she seems to know that the axolotl "might eat the fish" so I'm hoping that she'll stay away from that. I'm worried they wont get a big enough tank, proper food, or proper water cycling. My grandfather only has really experience with salt water fish. Does anyone here have any good resources I can give them about axolotl care? Because I'm convinced they wouldn't just listen to my advice and my cousin might just do the first thing she finds on google.

    My best friend actually rescued a betta in an even worse condition than the one around 7:30. This betta was in a bowl with no filter or anything, PLUS multiple minnows *from the creek out back*. The family had gotten this betta for their kid apparently two weeks before as a yellow adult male, and when my friend got him, he was pure white from the stress. The family decided to move from the apartment and were going to abandon him. Luckily the little guy was given to my friend. Unfortunately, my friend didn't have a spare 5gal at the time so he had to go in an old 2.5gal. It's been at least a month of daily water changes plus aquarium salts, and his HIH disease seems to be a lot better and his color is coming back! It's not yellow though, only some red so who knows what he'll be. Little guy's a survivor though. Not only did he live through that, but also a huge tornado that ripped through the American Southeast.

      They aren't evolving. They are growing up. Axolotls are Neotinic salamanders. They simply do not mature to the final stage of the normal salamanders life cycle. When the power went out during a big storm for two days, the only fish that lived in my sister's tank was one betta and two of those ones that eat the tank algae.
    Betta are not that tough, minus that one. It lasted a long time after that event.

    Thank you for continuing to shine a light on these videos/posts. Misinformation can be so harmful to both people and animals...
    RE: Introducing animals with a prey drive to smaller pets/animals. I have, through slow exposure to my budgie in her cage at different heights, gotten the family terrier to not mind when the budgie/cage is around (rather than stay fixed on her for hours because of his prey drive). This took a good 2+ years of mindful and careful exposure before I even began feeling safe letting the dog around my bird outside her cage, based on my observations of both my bird's behavior - was she stressed, was she social? - and the dog's behavior, based on if he was relaxed or already stimulated by recent playtime and/or the recent introduction of her cage to his environment. It's all about context and understanding animal behavior.
    Most importantly, though, it takes TIME to make "cute viral moments" happen - if they're not artificially and INHUMANELY staged via clipped wings/exhausted animals/etc - and it can be super harmful without the context showing how much work it takes to make these "moments" happen.

    • @livi6886
      @livi6886 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sounds like you are being very careful with your bird. I personally still wouldn't feel comfortable letting my bird out of the cage with a terrier in the room. Even if you have desensitized the dog to the bird in the cage, a terrier is still a terrier. I have a havanese (toy breed) with a very low prey drive and he is completely fine with my bird flying around the room, sitting on my shoulder, etc. I still would NEVER allow them to be as close to each other as that budgie and cat.

    • @sydposting
      @sydposting 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@livi6886 I have definitely become more careful since watching Soda’s videos!! I’m not actively shoving my bird’s cage in their faces or forcing them to interact/“get used to” each other anymore. Regardless of how I achieved it - and I would absolutely have done it differently, had I known better at the time - my patience and focus on my bird’s actions, rather than my “desired” outcome, has resulted in an environment where my bird can have Out-Of-Cage time in the same room as me without being disturbed or startled by the dogs, since they’re no longer as fixated after she’s been around - safely inside her cage - for a while. ☺️ She usually sticks to her play-things and/or my shoulder, but I don’t force her to go anywhere she doesn’t want to.

    Thank you for spreading all this to people. Animal abuse, especially fish and small animals, is such a huge problem.
    I do want to ask for some advice, because this comment section and community is really helpful and supportive. I have three cats, two elderly (13) sisters and a young (2) male cat who we got two years ago as a kitten.
    One of the elderly cats has never gotten along with the younger one, and the younger one wants to play literally every hour of the day. He also has a tendency to bite.
    Any advice of how I can help them get along a bit better? I know that he just wants to play with her but she doesn’t want to, which is fair, she’s old. We were considering getting another young cat for him to play with since we aren’t always available, but I’m also afraid that might make the problem worse.
    Any suggestions?

    My fiancé recently told me a story about how horrible his dad was to everything around him. So once, my fiancé had fish at around 6-7 years old, and he loved them. His dad decided one day to put them in the bath with him, just for funsies. Obviously they died within a few hours, and my fiancé had to flush them down the toilet with his mum.
    The funny part was when my fiancé said “I think we need to say a prayer”, but then couldn’t really think of one and devolved into the Christmas song “Little Donkey”. So his mum was just trying not to laugh at her poor son, singing his heart out for these fish thinking it’s a prayer, but singing a Christmas song for these fish.
    The dad was a dick and tried to blame it on my fiancé.

    I had a blue veiltail betta for about a month a few years ago. He was an old boy and was sick, so I brought him home from the pet store and spoiled him with bloodworms (his favorite food) and constant warm water. Surprisingly, he was the only betta at the store that was sick. He had an infection on his head, so I only expected him to last about a week. He surpassed my expectations and lived for a month before quietly passing one night when I was asleep. It's like he knew he would be safe with me when we met at the pet store. I named him Kuromaru, because of his dark coloration and because he was as tough as a sword (Kuro means black and maru means sword). RIP Kuromaru.
    I plan to get a red betta in the future and name him Benimaru, after a character I like with the same name in "That Time I Reincarnated as a Slime".

Also, I have seen the dinosaur hamster cage in that same pet store which was sad but not surprising.

    when I was in kindergarten, so 18 years ago, I brought my cat to school once. I can't remember how it started BUT it was planned, we were told that we could pet my cat only if she came to us, no carrying her, no "trapping" her; my dad brought her only for the 15 minutes that were discussed. We lived 200m away from the school. Now that I look back, I would never do that again but seeing it was a class of 5-6 year-olds, the behaviours were really good and they all respected the rules. My cat is still alive and doing well. She's my little 19 year-old baby, knows a lot of words, loves sleeping outside in her basket, and she's still adventurous and talkative :)

    My parents got me my first betta for my birthday in a vase. I had no knowledge of fish keeping but still upgrade to half gallon tank. Unfortunately didn't survive and I was guilty and sad to try fish keeping again for 9 yrs. I finally got courage to try again with guppies instead that I have a 10g main tank and a 5g quarantine. I did LOADS more research and when cycling my tank for the first time my dad thought I was doing too much work than what fish need and I told him off. He ended up going to a fish store owner telling him that "back in his day" you just put the fish in the tank with water that was it. The owner then told him "nope, it's not that simple", I had the glory of proving him wrong.
    My guppies have a good diet and are healthy and so far been with me for 5 months. My recent I got from petsmart who wasn't doing great in their tank conditions I brought home and nursed back to health has been with me for 2 months now. I'm glad i made the decision to try again. When they are happy and healthy, their personality shows and the work is worth it! Labor of Love❤

    The bath and school clips are something I would come up with as a 10 year old who wants some fun. But before acting on that thought I would be stressed out to hurt my animal. Like there is a line between: "That would be so funny" and "Even if it would be funny for a second, I don't want to stress my animal and I won't have any control over it in the bath or at school"

    I love your videos so much. I always wanted a fish as a kid, but my parents knew that I was too small to take good care of it so they never let me have one. I am so glad they didn't let me. I wouldn't have taken good care of it. I am really happy you make these and educate people on animal care :)

    What makes me really mad is whenever I try to tell my moms that fish can’t be in bowls or things that freak out birds, and they ignore and just laugh at me because I’m a kid and I “don’t know any better”
    Like I’m just trying to give my animals the best life possible

    Once, When i was growing up, my brother put my fish in the pool. My brother is around 2 years younger then i am. I was about 11 at the time, he was 9, i had four goldfish is a reasonably sized tank, it was not over stocked. And when i fed them i always checked to see everyone got a piece, since my goldfish were mostly different colours, this was easy. I watched them, and only three came to eat, i looked around the tank for the third one, and could not find it, I was completely stressed (I think the fish was called goldie so i will just call em that-) My brother was alone swimming in our pool (It was very shallow.) I went outside to ask if he had seen him around the tank or beneath it, Thats when i saw goldie terrified, swimming in the pool. Took her to the vet instantly to get some de-stress stuff, and put her into her own tank to monitor her eating. Still traumatised to this day-

    I got my first hamster when i was 5 but i was super gentle with her. She ended up living about 2 years and after that i got another hamster which also lived about 2 years! After my latest hamster sadly passed, i got a rabbit and hes about 2 years old now. We use to keep him in a small cage but when i did more research he is now in the room under the stairs with toys and hidey houses and such!

    the only singular scenario i can think of where the nail polish remover might actually happen, is accidentally grabbing it instead of water dechlorinator if you'd put them on the same shelf. other than that, i'd be very suspicious of that one lmao.

    I once went to school with someone who got a puppy, and because he barked whenever she left home, she decided to take him to school. IN HER BAG!! She would carry around the dog everywhere, and let it out to pee on the breaks. 8 hours in a bag, except for maybe 20 minutes here and 30 minutes there, when we were on breaks. It was awful.
