Thanks for watching and my apologies to the Obsidian users and the team! I mean no offence, and I think it's a brilliant note app! But it wasn't for me because it gives me setup paralysis every time I try it. And I suspect it happens to many people too. So, I just want to suggest some alternatives for those people :) Have a good day!!! - Shu
It's a great app, I've tried tons hoping to achieve a good task & note management system. I like the concept amplenote proposes and it's less convoluted than Obsidian with plugins for this purpose
Personally, I think Capacities is better if you want a purely free workflow because it already allows mobile sync without paying anything. However, it doesn't sync with Readwise or other tools, so you don't get your highlights in your notes. Kind of a bummer, and I wouldn't pay for the stupid AI features, but it has some nice features that I personally think makes it better than Obsidian or Amplenote as a free option.
Obsidian's strength lies in the fact that even if Obsidian ceases to exist, my notes will still remain with me. So, comparing the two is quite unreasonable.
Definitely, I'm not putting my notes in a paid service. I customised Obsidian once and have been using it for ages with great satisfaction. Obsidian lets you have your notes in your system even if it ceases to exist. For me, that's all that matters.
@@om6418 For me personally, I don't pay for sync and the easiest way I've found is simply to use iCloud. I'm not sure what your setup might be (I'm sure you can do something similar with other services). I just have my Obsidian vaults inside iCloud (inside an Obsidian folder) and it syncs in real-time with my other devices.
@@om6418 exactly, I am so scared I'll end up losing all my notes if my device crashes or something. Using google drive for that currently. However, I really want my notes to be available across multiple devices at the same time. Obsidian doesn't do that. Otherwise, it is almost perfect.
I believe that's exactly what he was doing. But always looking for more. I've done the same both in Obsidian and Notion. I settled on UpNote for the same reasons as Shu settled for Amplenote.
True, been there where he was and stopped using it. Deinstalled every Plugin and been taking notes for a year now nonstop. It‘s definitly not productive to overcomplicate your setup
Don't want to be that guy but Obsidian offers stuff for free.. Amplenote locks basic stuff behind a subscription fee. This seems more like an ad than anything.. Why would anyone use this? It seems you just wanted a quick all in one solution and didn't mind paying for it, which is odd because you could just set it up once in obsidian and be done with it.. for *free*
Amplenote is perfectly useable with the free plan - I'm note sure why this isn't mentioned in the video. Graph view, design options and vault notes (i.e. e2e encrypted notes) are behind a pay plan. All the other features mentioned in the video, however, are available without a subscription. If you want to use Obsidian synced across devices, you will have to pay for storage/syncing in one way or another, too.
I explored obsidian plugins only to suit my workflow. I personally feel that Obsidian is the best, though I only explored a few other PKMs. It is so fast and flexible.
Actually, you don't have to set up Obsidian. Just jump in with a simple white page, start writing, and build the system over time. Mine is really simple-just a pile of notes with mostly bullet points and a few basic plugins like Calendar (no Dataview, Kanban, or Tasks). I’m using Obsidian like a notebook for things like to-do lists, time blocking, and everything else. It's fast, simple, and offline
I dont think he said you HAVE to set it up. Its just that you can do ANYTHING with it. There are a million manners you can organize everything. And there is always the temptations to improve upon it or try other workflows, because the app itself doesnt encourage any in particular. While I dont use amplenote anymore, it really changed things for me by describing how I should organize everything, and just lending me the tools to do it. Anyway, this is not a problem for everyone, and there are plenty of ppl doing OK with obsidian... but there are also ppl who are better off with more "opinionated" software
worries he spent too much time setting up the perfect system with one app instead of working decides to migrate all his notes to a whole new app which is completely different and spend even more time setting it up make this make sense
I've used both applications as well as others you've mentioned and as you nicely put, it's very much a matter of personal preference. I used the tutorials you've made for Amplenote, and I enjoyed the simplicity of getting started. I ended up using a bit of both for a while to compare and they each have the strengths. But the customizability is really a rabbit-hole. It's easy to see so many productivity people using a tool and end up thinking "I should use and like this tool" when in fact, maybe it's not "the one" for you. thanks Shu!
Obsidian is far more superior, secure and most of all private.

I used to spend a lot of time researching and trying to build a perfect system with different apps but for me, Obsidian is just the best! Even tho it has a lot of personalization I try to keep it as simple as possible and it works for me, just the minimal.
Terrible app that I have tried to use for more than a year, and realized a year too late that it's a waste of time, I understand that it tries to be the jack of all trades but it's the master of none. And the biggest issue for me is the interface that is the terrible. I guess the biggest positive would be the OCR scanner capabilities, but it's not enough.
If you don't like a lot of features, then just use notepad that comes installed with the OS. It doesn't get much simpler than that. Obsidian doesn't require any special skills if you accept the defaults. It is quite simple for those who want to keep things simple. But offers additional functionality for those who want it.
I really wish apple notes natively support the slash command for quick actions and a much better organizational structure, and a much neater way to organize photos within a note. Like why can't we add a grid of images yet? It's 2024. Crazyness
For me the most important thing is the functionality to be able to search something and it just filters and gives me all logs I have inserted in chronological order for that. Something like a "topic specific builder". Does anyone know what tool is capable of doing this.

I am really having problem in unmerging tags in Ample note. Actually I wanted to merge two notes together where one note would be the parent note and other subsidiary note so that whatever task I added to the subsidiary note would directly add to the parent note, I also don't know how to do that also. It would really help me if you tell me how to do so. And also tell how to unmerge the two tags previously.
Do you need to set up a piece of paper just to write on it? No. Obsidian is like a blank paper that you can customize as you go and apply what you need.

Thanks a lot for the video, Shu. I've had amplenote on my bookmarks for a while and never knew it had this much functionality. I agree that platforms like obsidian can give way to customization without bumper guards can be rabbit-holes. I use a couple others and am very congnizant of tinkering with them.
Obsidian is really overwhelming and slows down after sometime. wish it was a native app and not an electron app. MS one note remains my go to note taking app along with apple notes. I use obsidian as a back up for all my notes and to run local ollama instances with fabric.
UpNote is hardly ever mentioned, has native apps on all platforms, markdown support, gorgeous interface and.. Lifetime option for less than most apps want for 6 months sub. Sync between devices included. Go get it and join the club.
Thank you for your your insightful review and comparison to Obsidian. If I can offer a frustration with this post though: You make it really hard to know what app you are reviewing. I had to back it up several times to catch the name. You say the name so fast it was hard to catch it, and you never show the logo. Also, even in the “more” tab, you never mention the name and have links to every app you referenced - except the one you recommend. So, little request to please make it easier for us to know which app you are reviewing. Thanks and keep up the good work.
I had a similar feeling and wanted something that felt less like a toy. Not for all usecases but for some. I settled on AnyType. Its still mostly free, syncs and has a novel but simple object oriented approach to data. I haven't decided if I am going to stick with it, but I am definitely going to give it a try. Ngl though, While I'd also take the sponsorship to pay the bills... I don't think Ample makes a good enough value proposition for being not in your control. But hey, whatever works for you works. I think its kind of insane how many people seem offended that you prefer something other than obsidian. I still use obsidian a lot, but I also use eagle for some things, notion for others etc. I think the bulk of my stuff will still live in obsidian, but I think anytype is my new recommendation tool for first time knowledge management people. Avoids a lot of the sharing and media friction that obsidian has out the gate.
99% of the time, we, the Obsidian users, introduce the complexity. This plugin paralysis was introduced by the influencers, and our obsession for copying them. The default plugin is best. The in built search is best. I know most obsidian lover will say - Minimal theme is better. Next will suggest to install settings plugin to configure the background. Yet another, edit css. You don’t need any plugins. Look for plugins when you absolutely need them. Not because you might need it later. Or someone said you may need.
No hate from an obsidian user , i always considered that note taking is something of a very private decision, you need to get comfortable with watever u use .
The magic of obsidian is you can uninstall all those plugins and use it as a very simple stripped down note app. If that's what you want, then why not just do this? If you really can't control yourself from downloading a bunch of plugins and wasting time, then I think you're going to find new ways to waste time after you move to a simple note app
I really like your videos, but i'm getting the feeling you change your workflow and tools every two days. it is of course good for us viewers to see ever new tools, but i hope your peace of mind doesn't suffer from all the exploring.
lol I haven't checked his channel up yet but from what you say it looks exactly like he just lies to his subscribers and advertises every product he's paid for
You pronounced that app's name so fast and only once as if you don't want people to know what it is and it is also misspelled in the subtitle. Se what I did there. :-) 😅
You have a utm code on your link to the app that you're suggesting people use. That implies you might have motives that do not align with your viewers. Which makes me not trust your suggestion.
Untrue. Amplenote also requires plugins to boost its functionalities. Amplenote is paid and online only. You don't have yourn local copy of notes inb txt files inamplenote, and Obsidian does make them. And, in a static style of notetaking, Obsidian does not require constant setup and adjustment, just using. 😕
I also ditched Obsidian for Amplenote. Not for workflow, mainly for syncing across devices which works so well and reliably now. I then started paying for it. I'm a knowledge collector and curator. Sharing public notes has made my personal and work life that little bit easier. But now trying to get into research I found its limitations. The plugins aren't great. There's no integration with Zotero. Too much friction in trying to practice Zettelkasten/smart notes. Hats off to Obsidian in that area.
Yeah because we all thought that we have 11.99$ per month that we have nothing to do with. If i am substituting a free software, it should be for another free software.
I'm really tired of putting data in subscriptions that your stuck forever. Before I used to have the rule of keeping everything on my own systems and started breaking that rule. Then you end up with tons of subscriptions of if the company goes down there goes all your data. People get to comfortable the internet is always working. I have had multiple times in my life the internet went down then you have noting till its up. Or I am on a holiday and there is no internet and I can't do anything. Had one company go out of business and lost all my data. So I am working very hard to figure out how to do everything the old fashion way. Maybe break the rules for Clickup for example just has todo's that are not end of the world. But notes etc, its got to stay near me even without internet.
Eh, I'd recommend the opposite. If you enjoy tinkering with stuff, don't use Obsidian. It's going to be distracting to you. Use a simpler app. If you already have a use-case in mind, use Obsidian. I enjoy tinkering with my Android phone but I don't actually end up tinkering with my Obsidian. Most I'll do is a few minutes switching around themes.
The argument about setup paralysis is such a bs. I could deduce from it that you will never settle for any note taking app because you will be constantly searching for the better one - as you prove by this video. So the flexibility of Obsidian wasn’t the problem, but rather wasn’t enough for you to stop you from searching something better.
Absolutely. I'm constantly looking for the new shiny thing, but always return to NotePlan. And Eduard, the developer, tends to implement features exactly when you need them.
I'm loving Amplenote. I tried it before and for some reason it didn't stick. Following this channel and seeing Shu continue to recommend it made me give it another try. I did and I'm really happy with it. It's simple and designed for action rather than a dumping place for notes that never get used. I think that was my biggest problem with Obsidian and all the other note apps. You can have beautiful systems with perfectly indexed notes, and yet that's pretty much it. Keep up the good work Shu!
The points you make on obsidian and also android are not so smart. Who told you that you have to personalise anything? Most of users dont do it . The nice thing is to BE ABLE TO.
You continued your problem by looking for the perfect solution somewhere else. Why don't you just dump all the plugins and focus on content rather than finding the perfect setup. You gave up too early.
That was holding me back from using Obsidian as well, the learning curve was too high, I don’t want build a system from scratch, I just want sth that works and maybe offers a little customisation. Thank you for sharing, this truly helps!
For the hardcore obsidian supporters: its not as easy as you claim to be nor as fast of a setup. Localized and secure ? yep, customizability ? yep ... but can it easily search for things ? or link things according to tags or close-enough reference ? nah. i used to pay for amplenote and capacities, one for the amazing daily jots but falls and fails on its database search and AI implementation or lack of, Whereas the other , seems lost in trying to figure out their next strat for AI usage instead of the usual sum, reword and other common used prompts. Heres how i use PKMs in general, daily jots, notes base on dates, done automatically or default to some folder but is easily searchable. database management, that , goes to capacities at the moment. However, if Saner ai improves their sorting and in-page creation, it should over take. even if i just need a database centric like, say notion, which breaks when it comes to daily note taking, i still prefer time line/ calendar style sorting first, before any other more productive methods. Used to pay for 1 year for amplenote, the lack of functional updates to improving the app is no go. Amplenote's downfall is the laziness of the developers and lack of proper database and search. And i agree what Shu puts across Obsidian, its just like notion, the setup is waaaaayyyyy to broad and too indepth. Amplenote is confusing ? sure, but is it ready to use and go ? deinitely much easier than Obsidian Capacities is the next best alternative, but its AI or llms are absysmal in integration [ think how Apple Intelligence in notes are used, thats the kind im expecting from a paid subscriber ( no longer ) ] its amazing how many negative comments, without much actionable feedback on why obsidian is suited, can be simplified, turns to sarcastically weird gaslighting.

If that's what you want, then why not just do this?
If you really can't control yourself from downloading a bunch of plugins and wasting time, then I think you're going to find new ways to waste time after you move to a simple note app
after following you for almost 5 years, I notice you would be way better with a common place book fella.
How do you get Amplenote to stop auto archiving your notes though?
In the options of each note you will find and option to prevent it from being archived .. sadly you have to do it for each note
@ so once it is auto archived and tagged, can I just delete the auto archive tag or will it just keep doing it?
@Xwodsarecool if a note is archived it will be added again
I really like your videos, but i'm getting the feeling you change your workflow and tools every two days. it is of course good for us viewers to see ever new tools, but i hope your peace of mind doesn't suffer from all the exploring.
He has ALWAYS been about Amplenote.
lol I haven't checked his channel up yet but from what you say it looks exactly like he just lies to his subscribers and advertises every product he's paid for
You pronounced that app's name so fast and only once as if you don't want people to know what it is and it is also misspelled in the subtitle. Se what I did there. :-) 😅
You have a utm code on your link to the app that you're suggesting people use. That implies you might have motives that do not align with your viewers. Which makes me not trust your suggestion.
If you do not like customization - just skip it
funny how amplenote is the only affiliate link in the description :)
Amplenote seems okay, but I'll never ever use a paid service for my notes.
Agreed.
Why not?
@@BDV000 I kinda don't think some services require monthly payments.
Amplenote's free version is pretty generous. Give it a try once.
This app clearly looks more complex than Obsidian md
I also ditched Obsidian for Amplenote. Not for workflow, mainly for syncing across devices which works so well and reliably now. I then started paying for it. I'm a knowledge collector and curator. Sharing public notes has made my personal and work life that little bit easier. But now trying to get into research I found its limitations. The plugins aren't great. There's no integration with Zotero. Too much friction in trying to practice Zettelkasten/smart notes. Hats off to Obsidian in that area.
While I love Amplenote and currently using it, I also feel the need to have zotero integration for research work.
Obsidian..Still no custom sorting of folders and notes? Then I'm staying with OneNote :/
Obsidian has sorting by File name, Modified time and Created time in both directions. You can check it out ;)
So, use Obsidian without plugins. got it.
What is the name of the app you try to promote. I can not understand and like all the vloggers, the essence is never in the notes
Obsidian is free and you have developer mode to custom it as u want it to be
The argument about setup paralysis is such a bs. I could deduce from it that you will never settle for any note taking app because you will be constantly searching for the better one - as you prove by this video.
So the flexibility of Obsidian wasn’t the problem, but rather wasn’t enough for you to stop you from searching something better.
Meaning they paid more for promotion? I guess audience is clear that this constant back and forth between note taking is due to monetary incentives.
Those in the Apple ecosystem, NotePlan is another great option to consider.
Absolutely. I'm constantly looking for the new shiny thing, but always return to NotePlan. And Eduard, the developer, tends to implement features exactly when you need them.
I tried Amplenote and while it is good, is no match to NotePlan which I went back to.
@@toonix stop looking for the next new shiny, soon you'll be onto the next new shiny and not get anything done!
Every time I try Obsidian I can't manually sort files so I immediately uninstall. What a goofy app.
of course it's sponsored and he snuck in the referral link among other apps 👎
I ditched Amplenote for Obsidian
Haha how many times its still okay to change your mind and notes app 😁 ohh its amplenote again
What this guy is doing is immoral, he literally is just an Ad. and comparing with obsidian but he is telling some soft lie.
Apple Notes
+
Google Docs
That’s enough.
The points you make on obsidian and also android are not so smart. Who told you that you have to personalise anything? Most of users dont do it . The nice thing is to BE ABLE TO.
Obsidian is awesome….. but it’s an highway to rabbit hole city 😂
EMACS is the only right answer
you don't promote a product by demoting its competitor. That's a no no.
amplenote's searching is really sucks.
i use pen and paper.
You continued your problem by looking for the perfect solution somewhere else. Why don't you just dump all the plugins and focus on content rather than finding the perfect setup. You gave up too early.
Couldn't have said it better
bro you change stack like women change pants, stick to one
That was holding me back from using Obsidian as well, the learning curve was too high, I don’t want build a system from scratch, I just want sth that works and maybe offers a little customisation. Thank you for sharing, this truly helps!
paid nonsense
For the hardcore obsidian supporters: its not as easy as you claim to be nor as fast of a setup.
Localized and secure ? yep,
customizability ? yep ...
but can it easily search for things ? or link things according to tags or close-enough reference ? nah.
i used to pay for amplenote and capacities, one for the amazing daily jots but falls and fails on its database search and AI implementation or lack of,
Whereas the other , seems lost in trying to figure out their next strat for AI usage instead of the usual sum, reword and other common used prompts.
Heres how i use PKMs in general,
daily jots, notes base on dates, done automatically or default to some folder but is easily searchable.
database management, that , goes to capacities at the moment.
Amplenote is confusing ? sure, but is it ready to use and go ? deinitely much easier than Obsidian
Capacities is the next best alternative, but its AI or llms are absysmal in integration [ think how Apple Intelligence in notes are used, thats the kind im expecting from a paid subscriber ( no longer ) ]
its amazing how many negative comments, without much actionable feedback on why obsidian is suited, can be simplified, turns to sarcastically weird gaslighting.
I find this channel creepy.
Eww
Just use apple nortes duh
99% of the time, we, the Obsidian users, introduce the complexity. This plugin paralysis was introduced by the influencers, and our obsession for copying them. The default plugin is best. The in built search is best.
I know most obsidian lover will say - Minimal theme is better. Next will suggest to install settings plugin to configure the background. Yet another, edit css.
You don’t need any plugins.
Look for plugins when you absolutely need them. Not because you might need it later. Or someone said you may need.

The flexibility (complexity), is feature which is being misused. Just because your piano has many buttons, you don’t press them all.
