Both Koi and Goldfish are carp. They are distantly related as far as they are from the same family tree; they are not however, as you say, the same fish. Their size and body shape are very different. Goldfish were domesticated 1,000 years ago in China; Koi 400 years ago in Japan. But they are both carp.

ehh. Koi are members of the "typical carp" genus, Cyprinus. Goldfish are members of the genus Carassius.

Hardy any room ? There pools are are around 5 foot deep the look so packed because the water is so clear that you can’t determine the koi’s height in the pond

One day our Koi disappeared from the pond. We thought the racoons had taken them. Two days later the next door neighbor came over with our fish. They had been tightly forced into glass jars full of water, where they suffocated. He said his five year old daughter didnt understand they were pets, and took them home because she liked the colors. Instead of being upset, we bought her a tank with bright fish of her own.

00:30 Koi and goldfish are both carp. They are both in the same family (Cyprinidae), but belong to different genus.

Koi are just colorful versions of the Amur Carp which is a subspecies of the common carp. Goldfish are just colorful versions of the Prussian Carp. Not only are they related, but they are so closely related that they can produce fertile offspring!

I know that they are selling this koi fish and they need to be accomodating to their customers but I think Japanese people are one of the nicest and generous people in the world. These koi fishes are not just fishes they part of the culture of Japan and the Japanese are willing to share them around the world. Beautiful place, I'd like to visit there one day.

This would be a dream trip. I have a koi pond and so many of those koi were beautiful.
I have large goldfish in a small 30 gal aquarium. I love watching them. It's so relaxing and eliminating stress.
You might want to consider upgrading to a 75 gallon long. Especially if you have one of the faster swimming varieties of goldfish. Even a large, cheap garden tub can be a great "pond" with a little DIY. Much cheaper than an aquarium and you can easily make it look rocky and natural with some touch n foam landscape. It'd mean a reduced chance of your water parameters spiking and increased oxygen for your goldy, plus more room to grow.

In Pennsylvania, we have a huge Koi following. Breeders here in PA breed koi with long, wispy fins that look sooooo graceful in the water

I'm watching you from Kanazawa city. Niigata is the prefecture up north Ishikawa-ken where I live. I have never been to Niigata but I will visit the koi farms sometime in the future. It's very nice you brought your mom with you to Japan.

Unfortunately in some country's , lazy owners released them into local waterways , to wreak havock on the native fish populations , and the rivers involved . The problem has got so bad in the Waikato River , NZ , that electro fishing is being done to reduce the numbers , and hopefully give the native fish and plants a chance to survive .
That's the reason they are illegal to keep in my state (Maine).

Goldfish which are literally selectively bred cyprininae, which is the subfamily that includes koi and goldfish… not even family but subfamily, that’s really really really close… when you consider you have family, order, class, phylum, kingdom, and domain with the other scientific classifications between domain and subfamily.
How do you say “they aren’t related” when they are both in the subfamily as carp.
