@@Benjen-gt3dp it’s true. Let it warm up for 1-5 minutes. The engine warms up faster than the transmission. But if the transmission gives jump every time you change gear cold or hot weather, then your transmission is slipping and need asap fix

Lol. The reason it clunks into drive on cold start is pressure issues within the transmission due to wear and tear. Eventually, it will bang into R too on cold start. Then what are you going to do?
No. Step #1 is monitor the PSI readings of the unit when cold. It should be in a range of 70-135 psi in P/N. It should be 230-260 psi in R. *This is the reason you have smoother engagement if you shift into R first then D* . You're basically working with double the required PSI. So engagement will be smoother...
If the PSI is low, it should be addressed immediately. Low pressure with destroy the unit. The common culprit in these is a faulty oil pump, or turbine aka torque converter. Another common issue is a worn valve body or a failed solenoid, particularly the torque converter clutch solenoid, causing pressure bleed off. The third issue that causes pressure bleed off unfortunately requires deep disassembly, and at that point, you're looking at a rebuild. But, it's a worn bushing on the input shaft where the drum rides on.
If PSI is within spec, and you still have harsh engagement into D, there is a relearn process you can do. The unit must not exceed 32°c (90° f), and requires you to shift it from N-D several times, over and over, until the clunk is gone. This can take anywhere from 10-15 cycles. Eventually, the TCU will adapt the correct line pressure for smoother engagement.

Generally a good practice to ease into each gear like this anyways. I’ve always done so with all my automatics.

  • @chrisreed26

Many cars will do that if you just start them up and shift in gear! The engine is in high idle warming up as it was just started!!When the engine is idling that high naturally it would make a clunk when you drop it into gear!! Wait for the van to warm up or at least let the idle drop down before going!! Does anyone on here remember the old days of a carb engine? You would have to depress the gas pedal 3 times then hold down to crank? Then let it idle until the auto choke dropped it down or you did it by bumping the gas pedal...then it would drop down...some would even drop down a second time! I have a video on my channel showing this old type of engine on my old motorhome..a 454 Chevrolet engine on a 1982 Apollo class A....

there was a service bulletin for this. If you go to your dealership and pay for a Re-flash of the PCM/Transmission. there were a few other systems that had firmware updates as well. but the one for the transmission is the one that fixes the clunk.

@@nitashanamah9366 I don't. wouldn't take too long for you to find it though. If you go to the dealership and pay for the computer reflash job on it, it will fix the issue. most dealership sell a package of 5 reflashes for different components. ECU, trans, A/C etc. for me, it was night and day. the moment I put it into reverse after the reflash, there was NO clunk. oh, there was also a bulletin for the A/C system as well. it fixed some bug with the vents not opening correctly. hopefully it fixes the issue for you. Nice part is that it is not expensive as other repairs, I think mine topped out at like $100.

We just bought our 2013 this past weekend, and after owning it for two days, the clunk into drive started. It seems that this is common, but it would be nice to figure out how to fix it. Checking transmission fluid this weekend, and I might change depending on the fluid and how burnt/used it is. I also have read that if you reset the computer to factory setting that controls shift timing and almost everything else (it learns driving patterns and adjusts shifting and performance to driver), through a dealership it sometimes fixes the problem, if only for a couple months.
