The British government maintains 14,000 troops in
Northern Ireland to keep the peace between Protestants
and Catholics, loyalists to the United Kingdom and those
who want to sever Ulster's constitutional links with
mainland Britain. The job of the soldiers is a
dangerous one - already this year three have died
and in 1972 some 130 were killed by terrorists'
bombs, booby-traps and gunmen. This item looks at
the work of the Royal Highland Fusiliers detachment
    at Crossmaglen, the front line.

Crossmaglen is a relatively quiet village since the British left in 2007.
It wasn't even supposed to be in Northern Ireland, it was not included in the first 2 original partition maps drawn up I don't think.
A slip of a British pen on a map caused all this. How Crossmaglen ended up in Northern Ireland I'll never know.

What gets me is your man saying how can you just murder men like this talking about the soldiers But they have been doing it to the Irish for decades. I don’t think any man woman or child should be murdered but it’s no big deal to them when a catholic gets brutally murdered but when it’s one of there own all of a sudden it’s barbaric. It ain’t no fun when the rabbits got the gun. I lost good friends in school from this war young innocent children. Given the demographics there will be a Nationalist majority in less than 15 years - BBC just said less than 2 weeks ago it could be as early as 2023. Then it may or may not be your property after that depending on how things go. If Brexit goes sour people will be itching to leave. At any rate, there will be changes.

They did they just made more enemies. It was completely unnecessary conflict. The only thing they had to do was keep the peace. The nationalists treated them well and welcomed them. It’s when they started helping loyalist mobs burn down nationalist homes, the welcome mat was taken away. Besides if Bloody Sunday was a recruitment tool for the provos can you imagine wide spread killing of Irish civies on a huge scale would have had the Irish people on mass enlisting either in the provos or the Irish army, all intelligence from the republic would have been stopped and it’s very likely the public outcry would have resulted into an even more brutal ground war and made things thousands of times worse than they were.

Ya see if I'm not mistaken, this same regiment probably these same borstal boys helping to hold down the victims , were involved in what became known, the pitchfork murders of two guys , Michael Naan and Andrew Murray.
Sgt Stan Hathaway, Cpl Forrester Sgt Chestnut, Cpt Snowball, etc ,etc it went right up the ranks.
Person's unknown were of course said to have been responsible, with heavy inference on loyalists. Only when one of the regiment listened to the Wearside Jack , bogus Yorkshire ripper tape , he was convinced it sounded like Hathaway, undeniably a Psychopath ,who he'd been on tour with , he went to the cops in Glasgow , probably looking a reward and was physically thrown out of two separate stations.
Only for a Savvy journalist at a Glasgow newspaper it would , like so many hundreds of others, have ended at that.
It seems at the beginning of the tour the entire platoon were shown Naans photo and details and that he was to be treated, appropriately, having earlier been involved in the civil rights movement.
It went higher than Snowball of course but he was offered a non custodial, with pension in tact no doubt. If you look closely at these individuals you can tell the half of them are unhinged.

I hated doing the run from the camp gate to baruky Sanger. It was an evil town, the hate was bred into them. I had my first contact just outside the town many years ago. The terrorists laid so many IEDs the Army stopped sending any vehicles near the area in the late 70s or early 80s. Then we did the first vehicle partial round the town in 90 I think it was. The locals couldn't believe what they were seeing. They just stood open mouthed.

Lol 'the hate was bred into them'! Wtf did you expect?? The locals to throw petals into your path perhaps as you menacingly patrolled THEIR town in unwelcome ugly army vehicles! Fuckin clown!

British army were totally ignored by the locals in the Glen, foreign occupiers on Irish land. The boys in the IRA made sure they hid in their watch towers

Brave men of Crossmaglen, who murdered women and children in their indiscriminate bombing campaign.......and a group who are responsible for the deaths of more of the catholic community than the RUC and British army combined.
Men who couldnt stand up and fight in a uniform, but, plant bombs and run away.
      Nothing brave about them !
      No better than ISIS !
If you search for IRA sex offenders, you'll discover more about the scumbags in the organisation.

And you dare to call me a terrorist, while you look down your gun?
Most right minded people on the island of Ireland would much prefer to talk of peace and reconciliation instead of reading sectarian bullshit. I’d like to think that we can all agree with the fact that there were wrongs and atrocities inflicted and carried out by both sides of the divide. How can our children and future generations truly live in peace if we continue to live in the past? History (the good and the bad) should never be rewritten/altered or forgotten and it should be taught in our school’s curriculum without bias or sectarianism.

Of course soldiers look down the barrel of a gun....someone has to fight back against terrorism, it's the same with virtually every military in the world.
