    Aston did a very good explanation of the failure. When I bought my 2015 M6 I thought I was excluded from the rod bearing failure... But unfortunately u can probably tell what happend. Luckily my car was under 3rd party warrenty so I am soo happy but if you have a s63 engine please get your oil sampled and prevent what happend to me

    This was a pleasant "episode"... as always :) The bearing on my 2008 M3 was in a much much better condition after preventive swap at 74,000 miles! The previous, and first owner, didn't lie when he said he never abused the engine cold. Not an regular basis anyway. Just got a little more confidence in my car, I thank you for that!
    Please keep the E9xM content coming. Any thoughts on doing something crazy like long headers, LSD... or why not a stroker kit? :P

    Hi. I notice in your rod bearings videos you don't appear to measure the rod journals with a micrometer or use plastiguage to measure the clearance between the new rod bearings and the crank. Is this not necessary or are the new OE bearings 'one size fits all'? Interested as I am about to purchase an E92 and will likely change the rod bearings myself. Many thanks and love the channel 😊

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you’re budgeting to get them done we don’t overly see the point in waiting for a certain mileage. We have heard a few stories where they failed a few thousand miles before the owner felt they needed to be changed.
      We would advise changing them at 60k+ for peace of mind, but if it were my personal car I would get them changed as soon as I bought it. I’m not going to do 70k so it just gives me ultimate peace of mind.

    • @sanmarino_cs1698
      @sanmarino_cs1698 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evolve Automotive That’s a valid point, and I know from them on, it will only ever have been properly warmed up. It’s a Sunday toy so the milage increase will be very low. The only problem is, when I’m making the journey from Scotland, I’m not coming home without that plenum and airbox too 😂😂

    Curious why you went with OEM and not aftermarket like BE Bearings with extra clearance and their custom ARP rod bolts? Did a lot of reading and this seemed to be the ‘correct’ fix.

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We choose to use OEM parts because of the available long term testing to show that they work.

    • @Antimatter.
      @Antimatter. 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evolve Automotive Awesome vid BTW kudos to you and your mechanic , So your saying that a well maintained , frequent oil changes the rod bearings can last much longer than 70k ??
      Can you tell me does this apply to the M5/M6 S63tu do they have the same rod bearing issue ? Thanks

    • @akkando
      @akkando 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EvolveAutomotive I would argue testing show that they don't work, otherwise we wouldn't all be putting fresh bearings and bolts in. Also the BE spec ARP bolts are much easier to install instead of the complex OEM bolt torque procedure. The BE spec ARP bolts reduce the chance of a mistake during install, so at the very least I would use those no matter what bearing goes in the engine.

    • @akkando
      @akkando 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Antimatter. There have been plenty of cases of cars that have been treated well spinning a bearing, and cars that are treated like crap that are fine. It would seem a bigger factor is the variance of clearance from car to car because there is always SOME variance with bearing size, or maybe some OEM bolts come a little loose over time as they stretch.

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I asked Raza from RK for a better explanation of this - “Everything touches each other but they’re riding on their centerline axis so the interference is minimal and negligible. The oil is also being pushed out of the bearings and pushes each rod away from each other and the crank itself, that’s how the entire system stays floating with clearances”

    • @stumonkey17
      @stumonkey17 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EvolveAutomotive That's good to know. Thanks for the response and thanks to Raza as well. Just seemed worth asking as the wear was so significant on the shells that it seemed like this could be a further problem.

What is possible and what is not worth it if it’s too much trouble or cost because of incompatibility depending if it’s from F or G platform 😊
      Or if it’s more easier to use other brands like Aza Auto Wheel, Recaro etc.
      In other words make it modern and sporty within reasonable price and without hassle or decoding.

    • @kurtishb2202

      Never, because in an engine rebuild, they aren't going for economy, less fuel consumption or emissions. Therefore, they made the clearance way bigger than factory, that they never worry about ever changing. But just like any engine, it does require reaching optimum temperature before hammering it otherwise you will destroy a forged engine also.

    • @scotwilson4169
      @scotwilson4169 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The whole point of rod bearings, and most bearings tbh is that they act as the weak point in the system, sort of a sacrificial part.
      Thats why they're made of white metal with a substantially lower melting point than all other materials, so you can do as these guys did and swap them out. Which is A LOT better than having to potentially replace crankshaft and conrods in the event of a failure.
      You can also send a sample of your oil off to somewhere like Intertek (not sure if they do non-commercial customers) and they will analyse your oil for metal particles, specifically white metal.
      So if you have a high quantity of white metal in your oil you know your bearings are on their way out. Don't know many people that do that though, its a bit of a hassle.

      We do not have any data for upgraded hardware as we have not seen enough examples of their long term wear.
      After another 70k - That is in Astons opinion.

    Rod bearing spinning? Are you not confusing the rod bearing wear issue with the S55 crank hub failure problem?

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, when a rod bearing fails it will often fuse itself to the crank and spin

      Not particularly. We advise customers to drive it home ‘normally’ before any spirited driving, but this is more a belt and braces rather than requirement.

      It did not, but we think they were close to failure which would have required a complete engine rebuild.
