@@machoman6969 so because you don't get properly represented in media you have more of a right to be snobby about who's opinions matter? I don't see the correlation please explain. I mean if you just said flat out bad opinion or explained what someone's missing not being gay id understand you but you decide to just word things you're not gay so this movie isn't for you. Mean while the creators made it for every one and there's plenty of quotes to show that. Your idea of Privileged is a little dramatic. I'm black and I always wanted to see more black characters growing up. Now I get to see that and that's great. My goal was never to have more representation so I could tell other races they can't watch it. That's weird and creates a divide where otherwise you could find common ground. Ima agree to disagree with you on this one lol.

    • @scottarooni
      @scottarooni 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

LOL! Yes, I caught that, too. The fact is that the movie is made by a gay white man, and he told his story from his point of view. Joseph is free to go out there and make the movie he wants to see. It's fine that neither one of them liked the movie because they thought Eichner's character was annoying, or they thought the movie wasn't funny--but I feel like they are attacking the audience that liked the film. Eichner is being called out by other reviewers for attacking people who didn't like the film or don't want to see it. Damn, I guess all Eichner succeeded in doing is creating a very divisive movie!

    • @kagoon0709

@@kagoon0709 honestly I don't think the large majority of his comments where personal. They both did a really good job explaining their specific gripes with characters and how the movie comes across. I just thought the saying white men part was kinda lame. You could tell that was a smirk of relating to what he meant(hence him also nodding) but also thinking he wishes he didn't say that lol. I can't help think he really was being honest about his perspective but it came off a little hateful. Minus the race thing though he was describing a unlikable main character. Some movies make that work and sometimes it rubs the viewer the wrong way. I mean this is supposed to be a landmark movie for gay people so when you see the poster boy mirrors alot of the more vapid parts of your culture and the cast is diverse to the point of cringe I can understand the disappointment.

They could make a comedy of the struggling board trying to make an LGBT museum that makes justice to the community to talk about unity within the community with the ride of gay trauma. They could make a romcom between a man who has fought against everyone to allow himself to be the way he is who falls in love with someone who is trying to be as masculine as possible and that generates the main conflict and the climax can be the family dinner and at the end it educates on being yourself and respect others and the main lead can finish his rightful romcom screenplay based on his story. We could make a satire criticizing the need to stereotype everyone in the dating scene or be a heartfelt comedy on educating the straight best friend on diverse families. Instead Bros is like mushing all the playdoh colors into one gray blob, mashing the pitch of 5 good movies into one bad one.

  • @ted1091

Eichner wrote it, and starred in it. Even in the promos with Luke, he doesn't allow Luke to speak. I agree that he IS the problem. The problem with Bros is that it would be funny if it weren't true. I actually think Jimmy Fowlie and Brian Jordan Alvarez do a better job of capturing the issues. Thanks for your review.

Billy Eichner is an aging gay man who never fit into any particular gay sexual archetype (bear, masc, etc.) which I guess is something gay men deal with, but the assertion that his own personal affliction with that is somehow supposed to be entertaining is lol. He seems very navel-gazing and conceited, as if him meandering about as a gay man is supposed to be entertaining in and of itself and we're supposed to care - this movie just seems like slop on a screen...but he was funny as hell in that Hulu series Difficult People.

I finally watched the film and was left with these impressions: 1. I was saddened that Luke Macfarlane was reduced to “a body” for much of the film, 2. I feel like the script was written for characters in their 20s rather than in their 40s, and 3. Billy Eichner really needs a hug because I think the LGBT community is a substitute for family and validation for him (like he can’t exist without them).

I saw this at a screening in Burbank and the crowd was really digging in. It was a fun environment and I found myself laughing along despite a wholly unconvincing romance. I too was actively rooting against this couple, and thought it would be more subversive to allow the characters to realize they aren’t right for one another and find happiness elsewhere. I enjoyed everything outside of the love plot, which, in a romantic comedy, is maybe not the point… 🤷🏽‍♂️

Im glad I searched for a review and came across this- I finally watched the movie and felt uncomfortable the whole time. Of course I worried I was being too close minded since my dad mentioned some things to backfire my in time comments when I had to pause to gather my thoughts- he's an ally and I'm queer... He seemed to think this movie was good when I just... Didn't care about what happened to the characters until over an hour in. I was also bummed seeing Kristin Chenoweth appear but not feel like she really showed who she was in what little a role she had.
I understand that sometimes you need characters to be unlikable in order for them to develop through the run time... But I felt this main character was just angry for the sake of being angry and I realistically would have just checked out early on rather than deal with his issues- I wanted to love this movie, so bad, with how fun the trailers made it... But even an entire day later, and I still feel uncomfortable. I couldn't even laugh at it to calm my nerves- I guess it's not my type of comedy and it didn't land well delivery wise. I hope that this is a step in the right direction in us getting more queer movies... I also hope that I'll like those in the future.

I think a limitation with regard to the marketing of this movie is that the selling point seems to be that that it's a gay rom-com rather than anything regarding the situation in which the characters find themselves. By contrast Fire Island or even traditional romcoms like Pretty Woman, Failure to Launch or whatever all have clear situational premises conveyed in their marketing

I'm 20 minutes into the movie and all of the main character's interactions are boring, awkward or bitchy. Had to check in on reviews to see if it gets better.

Agree with you guys so much! I just watched it last night and I felt like if someone else had played the Billy Eichner character it would have been much more tolerable. Having said that, I echo with your thoughts and feelings about this film. I did really like Luke MacFarlane.I think he's not only pretty dreamy but also I thought he was a really solid actor and played it a really nice level unlike his co-star Eichner who played everything at the same level.

I am watching this now, and I’m in agreement. I liked the supporting characters, but not the lead. It was like a caricature playing a character. He was so silly and extra, but not in the way that is entertaining. His posture is awkward and it was all too much and at the same time nothing.
Aaron's character was annoying too. He had such a doofus voice. Like, dumb jock, duh - meets the Fonz.
I didn’t dislike it entirely, but it wasn’t something I would be happy to have paid to see.

When I first saw the trailer, the only character I cared about was Aaron. He seemed likable enough. Everything else was annoying. I don't know if this makes sense, but Billy Eichner's character reminded me of Bella Swan from the Twilight movies, so I wanted him to shut up.
Edit: Yes! When I saw the trailer, I thought, "Aaron deserves better!"

I respect this review so much, and y'all are so open to have different opinion...I love it.
This film seriously jumped the shark early, the supporting cast didn't really have much to do, besides fall into their own represented tropes.
Billy Eichner may be "funny" but he's cannot lead a film (atleast not yet), not to mention his character didn't grow on me at all. It was as they were trying to take this movie seriously but at the same time try to be a satire, which failed. Was there some laughs sure, but it didn't break the mold of Rom Coms, or cinema for that matter. Plus why the hell are they releasing this in October??
Seriously a missed opportunity....i'm actually excited for Spoiler Alert that comes out in December, with Jim parsons and Sally Field.

Billys character was why i stayed in the closet till i was 26

The film just does not ring true. Bobby is a toxic, bitter, draining, relentless, self-indulgent person and Aaron would quite rightly run a mile. Plus we all know Aaron WOULD end up with fellow jock Josh, as that is generally how gay matches work. And Bobby's behaviour in front of Aaron's parents was vile and inexcusable - and Aaron would most probably never forgive him. The film does have some nice moments but Billy Eichner is simply not charasmatic or funny enough to carry it and the endless politicization of eeeeeeeeeeeeverything in sight is dull, patronizing to much of the audience and exhausting.

I don't know about this review. I give you guys that, as opposed to all the other straight up hateful reviews just because they dislike Billy Eichner's tantrum tweet, you guys have more balanced starting point. But first off, I didn't think Bobby was particularly cringey or uncomfortable because that's a character he plays (as Billy did in his previous Hulu show literally called 'Difficult People') , and it was very obviously to draw a clear juxtaposition with the toned down and less fussy character of Aaron's. It is not so unrealistic for opposites to attract in real life nor in fictional world of rom com, where the narrative of two very different personalities coming together after struggles is common.
The white privileged city gay life being unrelatable is a good point of view and I am glad you brought it up, since I myself am not white and I don't even live in the US, but it was not all that alien. Come on, young gay guys ghosting and not committing which gives you trust issues; having a body image issue; feeling of 'not being good enough'; challenges at work and trying to overcome jealousy while you know yourself falling in victim to it, they are all quite relatable. It's a comedy so it intends to exaggerate with Bobby's loud and comically belligerent voices to dramatize(which is perfectly allowed for films) the real life issues.
I think the beauty of this film was being very open about these oftentimes unhealthy qualities and struggles contemporary gay men experience, and by no means condoning them because the audience can see Bobby suffers, but to understand them and recognize them. Not sure if people always expect Call Me By Your Name if there's gay romance in films, but if they do then that's their faults. Bros was aiming to be the gay version of Trainwreck and Bridesmaids, and it did pretty good job.

  • @foreverhungry7777

Nick's non-verbal responses to Joseph's critiques of the film are 1000 times more comedic than anything I saw in the trailer. Behavior always speaks way more than a tonne of shouting ever will and much is said in what is not said. I also hear Joseph about nuance, because outside of the US most people identify as their nationality/ethnicity and there is a lot of nuance to the bigotries you experience from other ethnicities/nationalities when you are the not the conventional WASP type or even if you are not part of the dominant culture of the country you reside. I get a little tired of US movies fixating on this homogenous black/white experience when it is so much nuanced than that. Anyway, I enjoyed the review, gentlemen. Probably my favorite alongside Chris Gore's who brings up a whole bunch of very different points.

It's insane, I'm gay and I wanted to love this movie so so badly. I did enjoy some of Billy on the Streets segments but goddamn it, this was beyond awful. I cannot sit through the whole thing, one of the few times I actually dropped a movie halfway. The main character is so unlikable with no redeeming quality, essentially reading out articles headlines one after another at the loudest voice possible. Luke is great, love watching him in Brothers & Sisters, hopefully they paid him well doing this godawful movie.
