As a Japanese person, it looks like you got Japanese and Chinese architecture confused. They are similar but also very different. Our castles are almost always black and white, but sometimes our temples are more colorful, whereas Chinese castles can be quite loud.
1. Main critique of your first castle is that you wouldn't put your main keep on the easy to reach section. This is because castles work with the concept of redundancy. When one set of defenses fail, you have another to fall back on. Ideally those defenses are good against people from outside, but bad against people from inside. With your castle the main keep is easy to assault, so you would end up giving your assailants a big keep to camp in while sieging you.
I think the red accents are so popular in depictions of Japanese castles is because it is actually relatively common in Chinese architecture, which is relatively similar to Japanese style, to the point where the two seem to have mixed in (Western) popular culture. In real life, the two styles influenced each other a lot of course.
I see "not for survival" and I think "just watch me". The challenge of making something massive and difficult in survival, and especially in hardcore, is what captures my interest the most
I tried almost every one in survival, failed miserably at the dwarf style because i just got sick of mining tons of stone to make the underground fortress. What really inspired me was the Orc fortress, mostly because it's mesa friendly and I am in love with the mesa biome. Will try it out!
I would love to see an even bigger version of the first design. Was more of a big wall than a full on castel, but maybe i'm just spoiled by all the exeptional minecraft content
Honestly, my favorite build was the first one, the valley castle. I would so so love to see a castle like this again on your channel, SO DON'T PONDER about making something unique, make something you enjoy! Castles and stone structures from real life have more of a charm because they contain complex and simple ratios that are aesthetically pleasing, and that's what sold it for me with this build. You just got a free subscrible from me!
I was going to mention the terrain looks nothing like I get in my survival world, but then read the comments. Such an impressive backdrop to add to your quality builds.
So survival friendly is a word thrown around a lot, but really it varies person to person. Anyone that has enough patience can build anything in survival
My personal favorites in terms of styles would probably be the japanese and the dwarven one, since I'm a huge fan of japanese architecture, as well as a huge Lotr and Hobbit fan, which basically made me a huge dwarven fan since I was young. In terms of actual looks of the buildings you've made in this video, I actually like the valley castle the most. Although I personally would make some adjustments to it to fit my personal style, I absolutely love the idea and the way the mountains in the background make it stand out. As you've said, on a flat terrain it would probably look a lot worse but I really love the way it fits into the landscape and could imagine it being surrounded by lots of forests and farmland, like a small estate lord having his castle near the river to oversee all the farming activies and the trade. All in all, great video as always and I hope you'll get rid of that creative block and find a awesome project to pour your heart and soul into again!
thank you! yeah the valley castle was fun to make, and you could definitely do a similar style that doesn’t span a valley, but you would just have to change a ton of things about the style to make it fit. it would be way too tall as it is now, which means a lot of the proportions would need to be adjusted.
The survival castle is still very big and uses blocks that won't be easy to find in the early game. Deepslate takes lots of time to find and mine deep underground. I have never found dead coral and forgot it was a thing before watching this video. The scale and materials would make this closer to a later game or creative build. The Japanese castle was my favourite, however. The oxidized copper for the green roofs was a genius move. 🏯
what's really outstanding about all the castles you did but especially the valley and the japanese castle, is that you have such a good understanding about the architecture. you mentioned really reading up on japanese castle architecture before tackling it but you can also tell you've done the same with european castle architecture even if it's a bit atypical
Something I can refined for creative block is to look for inspiration from an unexpected source. Look at images from an old video game or comic book. Watch an old show. The most unexpected sources usually give me the best inspiration. I used to play a game called dragonfable, and found lots of inspiration for a dnd campaign. I used cover art from the chronicles of narnia as inspiration for a Minecraft build in creative, and I used a castle from Thomas and friends as inspiration for a survival world
seeing a timelapse of 5 different castles WAS fun, thank you! i enjoy that you talk about your process in a way that details WHY you are doing what youre doing and Also why its important to your vision :] and that its not always applicable to everyones playstyle! its a small thing but i do enjoy seeing the consideration!
I randomly came across this video and I want to say this is has been the most inspiring and useful video I’ve ever seen, I love making castles in Minecraft but I never know how to go about it, I start with the walls but it just ends up looking boring or flat, so this gives me a really good idea of how I should tackle that, than you got the content
When i see all these pc builds i always envy the time saving tools like copy paiste and terrain building that us console players dont have acces too at that extent
I have built various Japanese castles, and accompanying structures. Very nice. However, its not impossible to be more conservative with materials for construction. Lots of wood available, and red blocks are big plus haha
I think its because when people build Japanese Castles they get a bit of inspiration from Chinese builds. Japanese builds feel like their more Chinese than Japanese.
I'd love to see you do a Dark Souls style medieval castle. I was working on one where every new wall layer's platform extended backwards untill it reached the next wall layer, and I think it honestly looked amazing. I'd be intrested to see another person's thoughts on building like that
For the underground dwarven build, check out the Minecraft Middle Earth project. The Moria is awesome (and very big) !! Very rich, detailed, it feels actual and solemn at the same time !
I like your approach to making builds more survival friendly. It's good to have someone say It's okay to leave out this or that to make the building process easier. It validates a simpler approach which I feel was lost as building became as advanced as it is now. You do not always need the biggest or most detailed build.
OMG my dream map. i tried to make my own using worldpainter for months already but srsly I'm so bad at it and ended up remake everything over and over again bcos I'm not happy with the result. thanks for the amazing video and incredible map!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
I was actually insane enough to make a dwarven build in a survival server - solo. Oh, and it was BEFORE the Caves n Cliffs update...I used a few beacons under a large mountain range to clear out under it from basically lvl 10 or so, up to the ceiling which was around 150 or so. Started up high and formed the ceiling into random rockiness, with some stalactite areas hanging down, and working down in sections to make a formed cavern of my own. Huge gap with a bridge in the middle, that split at one end and went down into 2 separate "cities" built into the wall about 40 blocks up from base. With smaller bridges at that level to connect the cities on their level. Obove ground, on the other side of the bridge that went up into an entrance hall with large guarding statues and storage room, it went out into a small Walled section kinda like you had here, with a large entrance and tall walls and redstone doors, probably like 20 blocks high. Wasn't quite as big and detailed as that last design, but was pretty neat for survival. Never finished before the server died out and got lost
Can you start an Orc fortress inspired map? Doesn't have to be all Orc style but I like the theme of it, hastily cobbled together. Really good job. 👍👍👍
10:40 The red probably wore off, like how the majority of medieval stone castles were white, but the white’s worn off. And how marble statues of Rome and Greece, and marble buildings, were once painted.
These builds are a certified hood classic, they will help me get very rizzy and get lots of gyatt. Thank you Mr sigma for helping me find new content for my edge playlist 🥰🥰🥰
I have such a hard time with building castles and I dont even know why but building a dwarven gate is pretty easy just very time consuming because you have to dig a LOT.
red and blue = chinese castle black and white = japanese castle lots of smaller buildings with shorter tower = chinese castle one big tower = japanese castle
Personally, a terrain dependency is always an upside for me. I really like adapting the build's layout and architecture to the landscape, very rarely resorting to terraforming or building on a flat grounds. This way the unique design ideas come naturally, and the whole builds ends up having their "personalities".
Dude please please please. Do a gaea quadspinner tutorial for minecraft, that is hands down no exaggeration the best terrarin I have ever seen and its something I desperately want to achieve!
I would defenetly like a tutorial of this map in world painter. Though i am struggling to make it diverse and get World Painter to behave as I'd like it to. The style and details of this map are defenetly what I'd like to go with, but i have no idea how to achieve this. Just a quick tutorial on how to make those rivers, snow in between the mountain ridges and steps on the mountansides would help me so much. At the verry least I'd like to know what brushes you used for the terrain. That would already make my day and save my map from misery. :D
i have some brushes on my patreon that i’ve made in gaea, they have terraces like the ones in this map. but this map was actually made entirely in gaea, with snowfall simulated in gaea, which is why it looks so precise and natural. it’s hard to get snow as accurate as this when just using worldpainter.
Yeah i've too had a orcish project, everything was fine until i opened in minecraft the world i just did in worldpainter and tried to do some test builds then get to pmc to find some more inspiration and just realized nobody had build a single orcish map in like the past 10 years and well long story short i did find some interesting ideas but definitely not enough to do on a large scale project and just gave up now it's on my to do list for like 1y or so...
it’s really surprising too, i thought there would be a lot more fantasy builds out there, but even more popular fantasy styles like dwarven and elven are pretty rare in minecraft. basically no one has done anything in an orcish style. good luck with your own project!

@@GeetBuilds thank you for the quick answer. Than i think i rather look for another map because i dont have that much money to get patreon for just a map
The reason most Japanese castles have a white wash has to do with consolidation after the warring states period. White and black is the color scheme the royal family uses as their standard and as the country moved away from feudalistic control towards a more federal system it effected the nature of castle design. Clan lords that accepted the rule of the emperor/shogun would be allowed to keep one of their clan keeps colored in their own style, typically their largest or home castle, but all others they owned where expected to be seceded to the emperor. Needless to say if a clan didnt give up their castles and submit, they would be destroyed. After a few centuries due to the many earthquakes that plague the country, fires that drastically damaged the majority wooden construction and a general ban on constructing or repairing castles without express permission from the court ment that nearly all non imperial castles are gone. I remember reading in the same book that only around 10-20% of the imperial castles survive all the way from unification past ww2 into modern day. Even less of the individualistic designed ones due to these codes.
Imo your Japanese castle could’ve benefitted from trying to replicate more of the things seen in real Japanese castles, and some off axis aspects as well. I think you missed the mark on the design language of Japanese castles and made more of a fantasy Asian castle. Check out models of takeda castle for a good example of how their defensive aspects can look.

As a Japanese person, it looks like you got Japanese and Chinese architecture confused. They are similar but also very different. Our castles are almost always black and white, but sometimes our temples are more colorful, whereas Chinese castles can be quite loud.
As a Chinese I second this. The castle he built definitely looks more Chinese than Japanese
Really appreciate that you consider the survival aspects, I constantly find unfriendly builds while looking for inspiration but yours are perfect
yeah i don’t usually consider survival in my builds but for a video like this it seemed important
@@GeetBuilds what is the texture pack and shaders used in the video? it looks amazing
