      Laws are different in different States. In some you can only sue the parents, and in some you can only sue the child. However, the judgement cannot be collected until they are 18.
      Good parents would not want their child to have that debt so will pay it for the child, usually immediately, or make a payment plan.
      A really good parent would start a bank account and make the child to save up the money to pay them back, but when the full amount is saved, forgive the debt and tell the child they can have the money one day to put toward a house deposit or similar important thing.
      An extra good parent would say that they will match whatever amount they save over the years, so that it is an even bigger house deposit.
      Something like this can easily become a great life lesson in taking responsibility, and making lemonade from the lemons.

    • @brianbeach3024

      These shows pay the judgments in exchange for showing up on TV. They drop the civil case.

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@brianbeach3024 Half correct. The show pays the judgements but the case is not fully dropped. The parties agree to have the case settled out of court by a mediator under legal provisions that allow this. The judgement is real, and binding, and goes on the person's record. The mediator has the power to adjudicate, to dismiss with prejudice (meaning that it is final) or dismiss without prejudice which keeps it alive and can be heard by a judge. The incentive for going on the show is that the winning party is guaranteed to be paid. But while the parties have agreed to forego a hearing before a judge, mediation is a real part of the legal system.

    An issue similar to this story happened to me in early 2001. I was in San Bernardino CA, near some apartment buildings not far from the McDonalds i worked at. It was a small narrow suburban road and it was about 8:00 pm. I was riding my mountain bike on the sidewalk as there were many cars parked back to back along the street. My friend was a couple yards behind me. I was riding in the direction of traffic, about 8-12 mph. To my right, were the apartment buildings, with moderate grass yard space. To the left was a curb, where cars were parked. From a car just ahead of me, the passenger door opened, and an old woman stepped out to the curb directly into my path. She didnt see me, so she didnt move. She was too close for me to avoid her by hitting my brakes. Turning left would have sent me crashing into cars, so I turned right into the grass yard. There was a small hill, and as I got to the top, I couldnt see below. The swerve into the hill caused me to slightly launch off the hill and catch a very small amount of air. I tried to springboard the launch for the landing to be safe, but I was unsuccessful because it was such a sudden maneuver. My bike came down, front wheel first, striking a strange, low concrete strip, used as a border marking between two apartment buildings. The concrete strip stretched from the building's wall to the inner sidewalk edge, and was about 4" wide and 4" high. My front wheel hit the strip and stopped the bike's momentum instantly. The bike flipped over and I did a mid-air somersault with a 630 degree vertical spin, and landed on my back. Thankfully I was wearing a backpack filled with work clothes, which somewhat broke my fall. The bike continued to tumble, resulting in more damage. In total, the bike's forks that held the front wheel were bent backwards, the steering column was snapped, the front wheel was warped, the seat post and seat column were busted, the rear deraileur was destroyed, and the chain broke. The old lady just said, "Oh, I didnt see you coming," and continued on her merry way. The young female driver laughed at me, "What a fool!" and continued towards the apartment. My friend had fallen off his bike too, after skidding on the sidewalk, and continuing the skid in the grass, which made him slip and tumble relatively unharmed. He said, "That was one hell of a crash! Are you alright?" I said, "Yeah, but my bike is a complete loss, and those idiots didn't even care. I heard clapping and cheering across the street. I got up and looked across the street to see another apartment complex that had several young men on a 2nd floor balcony. I said out loud to them, "Make sure you catch the replays of this crash tonight on 'Wide World of Sports Bloopers,' you guys!" They laughed because i was lighthearted about it. The fact is, pedestrians dont look out for bikes any more than motorists do.

    Is he kidding that people walking on the footpath does not have the same responsibility to look out for others using the footpath, just because they are on a bike? So if we use the same logic that would mean people in cars need to be more responsible to look out for people on the road, walking, driving and so on the road then those walking in the road.
    Well, that is what this judge has said. So if someone is drunk, and walks on the road, are fine because he or she does not have to be looking out for cars, truck and that, for they do not have the same responsibility of watching out for other road users.

    Judge Joseph Wapner I'm sorry but I disagree with your decision. The boy said that he didn't see her until it was to late. That lady sounds like a fake accident claimer. The kind of person who fakes a fall just to get money. Number one, there was something you failed to ask for. You didn't ask to see the paperwork from the Hospital. Number two, when you asked her if she stayed in the same spot when she was supposedly hit by the young man's bicycle she said that she got up and walked to the neighbors house and sat down until the boy came back with another lady. So if she was able to get up and walk to the neighbors house she couldn't have been to hurt. Especially for her age. Number three, when you finally made your decision you said that the young boy is to pay the $2000.00 to the woman. Now, I would like to ask you a question. Where the hell would a nine year old child get $2000.00 from? It's going to take at least 6 months to 12 months to get $2000.00. And even if the boy wanted to get a job for the Summer, who in the hell is going to hire a nine year old to do any kind of work. When I was growing up my parents wouldn't let me cut the grass until I was 12 years old. Being that the boy is nine years old the father should pay it then what the father should do after he pays that woman is to give the boy chores around the house and start paying his son and allowance until the $2000.00 is paid in full. But, instead of giving his son the money, his father could open up a Savings Account at their bank with his son's name. Then state to his son that he would not be able to use any of that money until he is 18 years old. By doing that the parents will be teaching their son to have more responsibilities and teaching him to be more careful when he is riding his bicycle. This could be a good lesson for him.
