- A head-scratching decision by a Denton animal shelter has elicited outrage across the country.
There are a lot of questions and criticism on social media after the shelter's staff euthanized a family dog shortly after he was brought in.

Be more than happy to sign. This person and the place needs shut down. Taking it upon herself to have a dog put down so quickly is horrible. That poor fur baby was only scared. And rightfully so.

Only a 24 hours hold is horrific. The dog had a collar and wasn't malnourished. It was obvious he could belong to someone and just got lost.

Many shelters/ animal shelters/ private hospitals exist only to wash some money from *somewhere* .

Yeah he was dead before they put his picture in the news part of their website. Disgusting. They wanted to do it the quick way without procedure so they did not have to stay overtime. So he did not even get the knock out shot. He felt his heart stop. Damnit

@@bunaynayslay It doesn't matter if they are over max capacity. Procedures to find the owner after scanning the chip must be followed.

If this place knew that the dog had an owner, then they needed the owners permission to do anything. This is ridiculous and disgusting! I am heartbroken for him, his family and for Gunner! 😢

Not only should this shelter be shut down, but whoever is responsible for this should face criminal charges. They clearly knew that the dog had an owner, and they clearly didn't care. They were cruel to this beautiful animal, stole his life, and now his family's biggest, lasting memory of him will be of absolute horror and heartbreak. I can't even imagine what this man and his family are going through right now.
and the trauma of having your pet suddenly ripped from you is life-lasting. i do think this could've been preventable by both the family and the shelter staff but i am not at all going to blame the family for a shelter PUTTING DOWN THEIR DOG WITHIN 24HRS??

I’m sure Gunner was well familiar w/his home territory.
Someone saw him & decided he needed to be at the shelter, all on their own!
They are just as responsible for this pathetic act.
I can’t imagine the guilt & mental/emotional trauma this is causing Gunners loving family.
I hope they win a big lawsuit against them.

💔 I do not accept the shelter's excuses for euthanizing this poor dog without even reaching out to the owner. I hope the community comes down on this shelter like a ton of bricks so that the shelter NEVER does this again. The shelter also owes the grieving family a LOT for putting them and poor Gunnar through this. 💔RIP, Gunnar 🌈
They did reach out. They tried the phone number and email address on the microchip and they reached out on NextDoor and Facebook.

@@rh2728 Well yeah. Every living thing suffers at some point. Suffering doesn’t mean a life isn’t worth living. Sometimes it’s the opposite and suffering brings deeper meaning to one’s life later on. Any dog would be suffering when lost and then found by strangers. His family was looking for him and his suffering would have been very short-lived. They came for him right away.
@@rh2728 Gunner was traumatized from being taken to a shelter, from his 8 acres of land he was used to being free in!
He was not suffering from anything else.
No Vet had examined him at all!
I hope they get some big compensation for their own trauma they’re now causing Gunners family!

I am so sorry for this family. My family has 4 dogs and one is old. I can’t imagine their pain of losing Gunner. This was criminal. What an injustice to a faithful and beloved friend. I know what it feels like to have your dogs be a part of your family. This made me cry.

I saw another person say in the comments of his video that that same shelter euthanized their missing dog the same day it was brought into the shelter. This wasn't a random incident, they'd done it before and probably would again.

This was a horrible negligent judgment call on the shelters part. Someone who has lost touch with compassion and is jaded from years of hard decisions and heartache has been the instrument of harm to Gunner and his family, They should be held accountable for that.

they didn't do their due diligence, they deserve a lawsuit, this family had everything right (microchip) so many dogs don't have microchips that would benefit from them, and this dog had one with his owners information on it 😢

I rehab dogs and have worked with many shelters. Most are great places that save animal's lives. Without them, animals would suffer on the streets.
However, once in a while, I run into a shelter employee who has no business working there. They are ignorant, heartless, and in some cases cruel.
I hope this shelter provides an honest explanation for what happened. I want to see good places survive and not be stymied by a poor reputation or misinformation.

This happens more than anyone wants to admit. This is exactly why there should never be euthanasia at any shelter.
The wider issue is how you lot in the US treat dogs. They're nothing but objects. Four MILLION are killed every year in shelters in the US, over 3 MILLION of which are adoptable. That's one every seven seconds. It's almost beyond belief. You know how many are euthanized here in the UK per year? About 7,000. That's 7,000 too many, but four million is criminal. One of the many reasons I despise the US.

Euthanize? That is illegal for a specific period of time which can be weeks to months. That shelter is staffed by people who can be considered a cancer.
