Honestly, I was very surprised, because I was one of those young voters who failed to stop Bu$h, 20 years ago... The Americans clearly wanted more of what Bu$h/Cheney created. And the results of those bad decisions *of the American people* eventually compelled many strong, hard working young men to leave obsolete America behind. I had to consider that living in an affordable country with better people meant much more day to day freedom, but obvious bad government. It was an easy decision, compared to staying in America where the everyday people are so incredibly distasteful. I didn't expect Thailand to reform - but it was clear that young people here are VERY, VERY SIGNIFICANTLY more unified than the Americans are. I thought it would take longer for them to get a progressive candidate in power - or more likely they would become demoralized, as my generation did under your Bu$h/Obama...

Speaking as a foreigner, living in Thailand for the last 12 years, this guy comes across as exceptionally competent. We expats won’t be affected much by the outcome of the transition (or lack thereof), so what I’m hoping for is whatever is in the best interest of the Thais. They are a special nation and close to the hearts of us “farangs”

I’m a Thai citizen living in LA. I don’t follow Thai politics but this is definitely a breath of fresh air. He’s the kind of change that we need. We still have many challenges going forward to fix our country and I hope people who did not vote for him or oppose him will eventually come together to support and work with him. It has been such a long time for most of us to have such a qualified candidate like him to run this country. As an American living in Thailand; every body in my Thai wife’s family as well as herself voted against the military rule for Pita; the new hope for Thai people. Let’s hope that the military would not pull one of their old tricks ( coup).
For the first time ever I find myself in tears reading the comments from the Thai people in this post, so much hope in their words, it breaks my heart to see what goes on here.
I hope this transition is smooth but I feel there is trouble ahead, the next 60 days are crucial and if the threat of 112 is too great for the conservatives then there will be blood in the streets like in 2010.
I have lived here in Thailand for 11 years and follow politics closely, based on the historic behavior of the military and the blessing they receive from on up high, I feel trouble is brewing, I hope I am wrong.
Future Forward and Move Forward are the best thing to happen in Thai politics in 25 years, GO PITA!

@@severusbandaya As a Thai myself, one clear example is the rights to question the government without being jailed. With the coup leader, ppl couldn’t have different opinions towards the leader and gov which created a big hole for corruption. The corruption percentages increase by huge amounts during coup and military gov. That’s because they exploit the resources and having a deal with 1% upper class by legislating law to minimize and shut many small businesses down e.g. craft beer. In Thailand, it’s illegal to brew your own craft beer and sell it as a small business brewery. The law requires 10 million liters/year to get permission from gov as a legal brewery and to sell the product in the market. That’s totally unfair for small breweries. There are 2 big companies who hold most of the margins in beer market with 280,000 million baht. Even millions of Thais were signed to change some rules to improve this country but It’s always rejected by military governments and senators.

This is not just about kicking out the military. But this man has changed the practices of the thai politics forever. The practices that are so badly rooted in thailand. No vote buying, using very little money to run the campaign, did not accept big donations only accept small donations to run campaign, no big name candidates at all, all candidates are ordinary people, very young parties mostly 30-45 year of age and good heart.

Thailand did not live in darkness for 9 years. Thailand lived in peace after the debacle of red and yellow shirt leading to death and destruction. Thanks to the military at least peace and order was restored and now the election is held in time . Lets hope those corrupt politician are not back to steal.

We're glad that after nearly ten dark years we've managed to reach the end of the tunnel, and that end happens to be a light. We have been lacking a competent leader for nearly a decade and Khun Pita winning the election (and Puea Thai coming in the second place) is our crack of hope. We truly hope that the senates, the military junta who have been chaining down our country for such a long time and government service personnel will pave their way for new generations to finally get the chance they deserved for a long time in governing this country.
