This works very well, although, while the nickname you use is reusable, the link it generates is different every time, so you cannot reuse the actual link. So students HAVE to use the nickname to join your meetings, and not the link (as it is different every time).

I've done some testing and I even waited 60 seconds to be the last one out of the call. Still students can rejoin. Our district has reported it, but still not reliable. Hope they get it worked out. Thanks for the video Eric. Nice job and keeps me from having to make new videos every day as all these updates keep getting pushed out. ;-)

Google admin should disable student accounts to start a google meet by putting them in an organizational unit different from the organizational unit of a teacher. In that way, student accounts have different settings with the teachers.

I'm definitely not tech savvy, so please bear with me. I have to do several live conferences per day, that are repeated weekly. I've set up my Google calendar so that I don't have to continually send out invites for Google meet. How do I prevent students from going on their calendar and starting a Meet using the link I set up for future sessions? I meet with different students for each meeting. Thanks for any info. You have been a life saver for my school! 😁

I love how clearly you explain things, especially for those of us still ironing out the new virtual formats. I do have one question, though. I know that as the teacher who initiates the meeting, we are able to remove students. However, if we need to remove a student early (behavior, or refusing to mute, etc) - is there a way to make sure the student can't rejoin immediately? I've heard that this is not possible, but that Google may be developing the feature.

I'm confused about the code vs the nickname. What am I putting in google classroom as a link? Am I still using the 10 letter code and giving them the nickname as well? When I set up the meet, where do I put my nickname so it's linked to my meet. Do these questions make any sense? We have reoccurring meets that are set up with Calendar.

In our district we refer to classes like this anyway; 3J we know would be 3rd grade and Mr.Jones for example. So for the Meet calls since the nickname could be similar to another school's within our domain I am suggesting the initials for our school to go before it. Let's say the name of the school is Buder Elementary. A 3rd grade classroom with a teacher's name Mr. Jones would be bu3j. A kinder classroom with a teacher's name Mrs. Flowers would be bukf. Hope that helps.

What if your internet stops working and you as a teacher is knocked out of the Google meet lesson? What can be done to ensure students are out of the meeting as there is no teacher there? with Zoom, everyone is kicked out if the host is out. this happened to me last week, my computer freeze and I had to restart , which meant I had to exit the class, fortunately, I had invited another teacher in the lesson because we do team teaching and I teach all the students of a particular year group. So I was able to message the teacher and let her know my issue and continue for me till I was able to reconnect to the internet and reenter the meeting. Thanks

This is great. However, it only seems to work when I create a meet on the fly. It does not seem to work when I make one on Google Calendar. We set our meetings up as repeating on the calendar and then post links also in Seesaw on a schedule. I tried to edit my existing meetings, and tried to create new ones and did not see a password option. When I tried to create an instant meeting,,, it worked.

Before being aware that I could create a nickname to prevent students from entering a google chat before I've joined or after I've left the chat, I had generated a code in a google classroom post. My students have been using that code ever since. Is there a way that I can go back to that code and add a nickname to it, rather than start over again. Otherwise, that code will still allow students access when I'm not in the chat.

Yes, you can always just keep reusing the Meet link you have. they do not terminate (unfortunately) based on the calendar times. Alternatively, if you create a recurring event in your google calendar the meet link is consistent from event to event.

This is really useful! However, I was wondering if there is a way NOT to get the notifications to admit someone from outside the domain to a meeting created as shown in this video. I can see that if someone from outside the domain tries to enter using the nickname code, then the notification does not go to the teacher during the meeting. But, the notification does go if someone uses the ten-digit code (from either the URL or meet info) of the same meeting. So, is there any way to completely restrict getting notifications from someone not from the domain?

Unfortunately we found out the hard way last week.. if we physically remove students from the meeting, due to them not logging off, an imminent issue, parents acting inappropriately, etc. The child is no longer able to use that nickname to log back in ever, so we (as teachers) had to change our nickname for the whole class. Which can be frustrating. I hope that Google updates this, I know i had trouble last week because of an update where I was unable to mute my students due to the poll update, but our related arts teacher who joined us later was the host of a meeting I created. Not bad mouthing because I love Google, but technology will always have its faults. Just that day was a safety issue. Just glad nothing happened that day to where I needed to mute or and a meeting while my littles were online.

However, PLEASE NOTE: Students can still rejoin if they hit rejoin right away or use the code again within 22 seconds...I've done some testing.

    • @joshuaharris753
      @joshuaharris753 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Kim Gordon There is not a way to do that that I know of. Also, all the protection aren't the same (according to Google's support blog) if you don't use the procedure in the video. I would suggest that they remove the Meet link from their calendar events as a first step, THEN as a second step they can add the nickname of the New Meet the the description/notes section of the calendar event, so that way everyone has it, they still know the times, but they cannot get in unless the teacher is there.

How can I do this in Google Classroom? Because the class code is automatically created and I don't think I can change it.

thanks for your efforts on this yet this is counter to what Google has "promised" as an upgrade in last two weeks -- they claimed they are putting in teacher/meeting originator controls to block others from entering or starting a meet. Would be better that it is a feature of Meet rather than a trick of how you name or create a meet. Google should just fix this across the board...REGARDLESS of how the URL was constructed. If they are trying to make the product Zoom or GoToMeetiing, then it should have the same features, bells and whistles, especially security based ones like this one.

In Admin Console, you can restrict users from being able to start a Meet. By default, only users from your domain will be able to enter Meets originated within that domain, and external users who have not been explicitly invited only have the option to request to join, which gives a prompt to the Meeting creator.
That said, it has FAR better security than Zoom if you care to read about it. cloud.google.com/blog/products/g-suite/how-google-meet-keeps-video-conferences-secure The features that you're concerned about, at least in an education environment, are not security-related, but behavioral in nature.

Understood. But feature to end meeting when orginator leaves are still not in place across the board.

@@scottbarnett5717 I think the reason they keep the meeting open at all is so you can technically re-use the same meeting link over and over. What I really want is a permanent mute so kids can't un-mute themselves after I mute them or a "Banish" button for kids that are being a-holes so they can't rejoin until I give them permission.

Would love to be able to post a direct link in the calendar notes section to a nicknamed meet. For some reason neither meet.google.com/nickname nor g.co/meet/nickname seem to work. Any ideas? Current work around is to post something like - meet.google.com CODE: Nickname
