There is no question there are legit deals out there on the internet. And I would argue that eBay is one of the best places to find them, because the seller has to pay money to list it there. Also, two years ago, I was trying to sell a 2000 Ram 2500 Cummins automatic 4x4. Mostly great looking truck with high miles. I couldn’t get $9000 for that one and ended up trading it, because those trucks were absolutely in the toilet due to insane diesel prices at that time. And this wasn’t long after paying $14,000 for my third gen… I think you got a good deal! But it doesn’t surprise me.

Somebody getting scammed on a car could potentially turn them off from the classic car hobby, and that's horrible. I've bought 1 sight unseen (in person) myself....but I am POSITIVE the seller is a straight shooter.
If I can't physically put my hands on the car and see the title to match it to the vin I wont even entertain making an offer. Maybe its because I'm old and this is how we did it but it has served me well for a lot of years. Nice catch on this scam artist. Keep up the great work...🤓
I’ve done a whole lot of negotiating via internet and phone conversations before buying. If you want to make a deal on these things, you have to be on it. The competition is stiff…
@@DeadDodgeGarage I totally get that and for certain types of deals I will buy without being present but for big purchases (like over a couple hundred bucks) I need to see and touch what I'm buying. Seen more then my fair share of people getting scammed on vehicles. Don't even get me started on classic car lots and the tricks they use. lol.
These cars, and others from the classic muscle car era attract a lot of non “car people” - that’s the level of love people have for this era of vehicles. They are the ones who are most likely to get scammed. I tell them to get something more modern, from a Carvana, that has a warranty, return policy, can be serviced by a mechanic or dealership, and will be more reliable and generally a better car. And nope one ever listens. If you know what you’re doing, and you enjoy wrenching and fixing and inspecting and tweaking and truly love old cars, great. But for the average person, who just wants to have something nice to drive once in a while, the new stuff is better. OK I have to get out in the rain and drop my gas tank to fix a leak now…
Jamie I am so happy I bought my cars back in the 80s when they were plentiful and you could go look at them there was lots of them for sale within five 600 miles of a year and yeah I got blessed with some nice cars but I tell you nowadays it's sad to see what some people pay for stuff and I just can't believe the deceiving people out there sad good job on the explanation of the situation here and thank you for the video
In person only thanks, I need to be able to lick the bugs on the windshield and taste the oil from the dipstick while the owner questions my purchasing approach. This is how you buy a charger, this is why I have a charger!
You can also see ads saying " Ran when I parked it " or " needs starter " You can't drive or start it because the motor or tranny are blown . The owner will swear up & down it runs great . Also I'm a computer dinosaur and not to savvy and I've sold many items on craigs list using my 20 year old potato .
There is a reliable list of goofy things people put in ads that are code for other things. One of my personal favorites is flippers listing cars they just bought for sale. You know that’s what’s going on when all they have are pictures on the trailer 🤣 I’ve also seen people list cars for sale with pictures from the previous seller’s ad. It’s happened with cars I’ve sold!
Just came across your channel a couple weeks ago. Was a Mopar guy a long time ago, but have been getting the urge lately to get one. Checked out a 318 powered 66 Charger a couple weeks back, but unfortunately it was going to be too much work. I really like your dead pan humour and imagine if I ever had a YT channel it would he very similar to yours. I cuss waay too much as well when wrenching. Lol!
I did though just buy a 2014 Jeep Rubicon for $12,900 (a going price around here would no lower then 17,000) with a 167,000 miles but zero rust and brand new tire that I priced out at $1,800. The only thing I think I will be doing to it is install a B&M or Dorman shift. It’s a 6 speed and the shifter feels like rubber.
Scammers are running rampant… some aren’t so clever.. offering fully restored classic muscle cars for $19,500.. their user name screams scam usually on marketplace
The mopar collector car and muscle car world is a crazy place. People work extra hard to set thier car apart from the rest by boiling down the components to the smallest of details to demonstrate how rare the car is. A common car with an uncommon assortment of colours and options suddenly becomes a 1 or only 30 made, a green sattelite with red interior and optional gegaws like a cigarette lighter or something like a badge on the dash makes it a rare car. Sorry, not in my world. It’s the same mopar world that works so hard to scam potential buyers into purchasing faked cars. It’s sad but in a way the inflated prices, fake kookery scam cars and uneducated eager buyers wanting to get in on the action deserve each other. Im happy to say my Ford world isnt this way, Ya right!
Yeah I don’t give half a crap about any of that. Lol. Hell, my Demon is 1/2050 or so 340 four speed ‘71s. That’s plenty precise enough for me - even if it is special among them, and it is.
Mopars are ridiculous in that regard, but most any of those mid '60s-early '70s muscle cars can get caught up in that. I happen to know of a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T 440 4-speed for sale by a project car dealer. No engine or trans, holes in the frame, no floors, no front panels or trunk lid, no glass, interior is pretty much unsalvageable, and it looks like a tree might have fallen on it at one time or another. It can be your for only $25,000! That's the most ridiculous listing on their site, but even the Fords and Chevies are way out of reach for the condition they're in. And that, my friends, is why I got turned off to that era of muscle cars.
I recently tried to buy a Panamera Turbo, and it turned out to be a scam. It was on a reputable auction site and they assisted me in determining it was a scam.
I've run into a few scammers, I haven't been scammed yet. I try to have fun with them before they realize they aren't getting money from me. I actually got put in Facebook jail for messing with one. That seemed a little backwards, but it was worth it.
That car is for sale on FB in PA for $ 30k. Another scam is a real dealership will be used as a front unbeknownst to that very dealership, they have legit bank accounts to send money, bottom line is never by something without having someone go check it out and never send money first.
When I lived in Utah I ran into the same scam on a used enclosed trailer. Fortunately I called them out on it before money was changed hands but they did waste A lot of my time.
An easy way to expose a scammer is to tell them you are hiring an inspector to look the car over and ask for their address. They will stop answering your messages.
You have to do your due diligence. Some sellers put a lower price on Craigslist and Facebook to make you call for the real price. That wasn't the case here but some do.
I understand people enjoy rebuilding them but as the age-old adage goes, once a car is driven off the lot it loses value, and any money put into them thereafter is considered 'general maintenance' that adds nothing to the value. P.T. Barnum said it best.
i have never understood the mindset of buying a personal car sight unseen, like i would be willing to wire $10000+ for a car but would not be willing to drive (or even fly) out to see the car first, its amazing how good an underbody can look in pictures after a coat of spray-paint, also how do you know the engine doesn't have issues if you haven't heard it startup and run?
9:00 Another key detail here is that the ebay listing has a larger resolution picture. Whoever has the smaller resolution picture copied it in some way that compressed the image and reduced the resolution So if the scam is a few layers deep, the largest resolution is the real/original seller EDIT: I made the colossal error of not watching the whole video before commenting, and you briefly mentioned it at 10:50. But still you can see the actual resolution numbers earlier
I had a running driving but rough-ish 69 charger I sold in 2002 for $2000. I literally regret it everyday. Was originally green/green 383 2 barrel but was painted white before i bought it.
@ciklop4206 mine would have been fine had i kept it. I had a 70 chevelle at the same time and both sat inside next to each other....the chevelle still is inside untouched and quite good.
I actually bought my dart thru an eBay ad in 2021. I think I got lucky based on what you said. I’d never have sent a deposit though, so if that’s the game, my common sense would have protected me. I was only interested because he was fairly close by. I just went, met the guy…and saw the car. I paid him when I went back to get it. He was a very nice guy, and even thru in an extra slant six engine he had removed from his Scamp. There really are legit sellers out there, but I probably would not do it again. Times have gotten weirder since then. Thank you for this video though. It’s excellent public service education. 😊👍👍

I almost fell into the trap a few years ago when buying a VW Camper. It was a cheap van on what looked like a dealer page that was near to where I live, but as soon as I started asking about come to see it I got the sorry I'm overseas at the moment but can have it shipped to your house at your cost spiel.

I fix up old cars as a hobby. I but cars long distance often. I have a trick I use.. it is soooo valuable, I wont even share it... I dont need more competition in this field...
So mad my neighbor wouldn't sell me his 440 1970 Dodge Challenger for $2500 back in 1994. He "didn't want to see it next door, no longer in his possession".
Nope. You go in person, match the title to the owner's ID, then match the title VIN to the numbers on the car. Only then do you think about handing over money.
Cool! Feel free to ignore all of the stories in the comments from people who bought a car sight unseen and everything worked out fine. Because obviously that never happens.

Jamie, I looked at that car for the last 2 weeks now, it's on eBay in Pittsburgh I think it is for $32,000 then he lowed it to $30, 875. It's not a bad car I guess, he has a lot of pictures on the eBay listing.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Yep, seen that after I watched the whole thing, I'm a moron. If that car was 10,000 I would have walked from Vegas to buy it. I do like it.

@ when I bought my hellcat new I went to about 4-5 dealerships trying to buy one new cash not that they care. They all laughed and said you’re not buying one for less than $30,000 above MSRP and you can’t buy one from out of state. Literally told me that multiple times. I drove to New Jersey from Massachusetts bought one for under MSRP and registered it without issue. That’s why I hate dodge. I’m more of a GM and Ford guy. Now seeing them struggle and mass layoffs couldn’t make me happier. And the one near my house had 2 Dmeons and 2 hellcats stolen from them (they store cars for profit during the winter) and they won’t admit that they had custom cars stolen from them. Even tho 8 state troopers were there all day long and my friend is a mechanic there. They’re still denying it to this day. Happened last winter. Karma comes full circle. They steal from customers and they got stolen from. That’s life I guess
Jamie. Doing the Lord's work. I work in Cybersecurity and bad actors have come a long way from being a Nigerian Prince. If it's too good to be true, walk away.
I've had potential buyers ask me to take pictures of the VIN sticker in the doorjamb & the VIN plate on the dash (beneath the windshield). And yeah, I've never blocked my tag# when selling.
I've asked for a picture of what ever part or paperwork with a $1 in the pic, with old Abe facing one way or another. Legit sellers laugh and say okay, scammers piss and moan about it
When i buy something online out of state i either have someone local look at it or i ask for vert specific photos with very specific information included in the photo
And that’s what the guy looking at this car did. He asked for a picture of the title and the guy’s driver’s license. He didn’t send a license picture, but did send a picture of *A* Charger title.

Don't even get me started on classic car lots and the tricks they use. lol.
Great information. I was almost scammed some years ago but I've become more careful and spectacle.
You’re doing a good service here. Great videos. Interesting stuff on your channel and perfect dry humor.
Thank you!
OK I have to get out in the rain and drop my gas tank to fix a leak now…
I agree. Also… ugh.
Great informative video. Thanks Jamie
Whoa !! Outstanding detective 🕵️♂️ work , Jamie !!
Thanks for the Public Service Announcement and perfect example
Jamie I am so happy I bought my cars back in the 80s when they were plentiful and you could go look at them there was lots of them for sale within five 600 miles of a year and yeah I got blessed with some nice cars but I tell you nowadays it's sad to see what some people pay for stuff and I just can't believe the deceiving people out there sad good job on the explanation of the situation here and thank you for the video
In person only thanks, I need to be able to lick the bugs on the windshield and taste the oil from the dipstick while the owner questions my purchasing approach. This is how you buy a charger, this is why I have a charger!
Thank you for your service.
Lol!
Haha. Same… thank you!
Good job! That applies to many items on the "interwebs"....
I've noticed third gen RAM's like ours have lots of these kinds of fake ad's too.
Scammers are running rampant… some aren’t so clever.. offering fully restored classic muscle cars for $19,500.. their user name screams scam usually on marketplace
considering how many voted for Trump I'd say 50% of America arn't so clever.
Amazing information. Super great presentation 🎉
Thank you!
Thanks for the PSA, very useful
Im happy to say my Ford world isnt this way,
Ya right!
Wow. Well, that’s special.
I have a reputation you can verify. Scammers like this give me a bad name.
Absolutely. You have many happy customers. I’ve heard from some of them!
I've run into a few scammers, I haven't been scammed yet. I try to have fun with them before they realize they aren't getting money from me. I actually got put in Facebook jail for messing with one. That seemed a little backwards, but it was worth it.
Yeah, I’d say it was worth it. Haha.
That car is for sale on FB in PA for $ 30k. Another scam is a real dealership will be used as a front unbeknownst to that very dealership, they have legit bank accounts to send money, bottom line is never by something without having someone go check it out and never send money first.
Also ebay, as I showed in the video. In the eBay listening, he mentions that it is for sale locally as well.
When I lived in Utah I ran into the same scam on a used enclosed trailer. Fortunately I called them out on it before money was changed hands but they did waste A lot of my time.
It still amazes me that there are people who will buy any car, let alone a "collector" car, sight unseen.
There are thousands… and thousands…
Jamie: Dodge expert and consumer reporter.
An easy way to expose a scammer is to tell them you are hiring an inspector to look the car over and ask for their address. They will stop answering your messages.
Jaime doing PSAs. Bless you, Sir!
You have to do your due diligence. Some sellers put a lower price on Craigslist and Facebook to make you call for the real price. That wasn't the case here but some do.
I had a 68 Charger in really good shape, but it only had a 318. Still looked good.
Great investigative reporting
Great video of knowledge
As always i learn something new thank you😁 looking forward to the video of the 69 😊
Me too! Thanks!
I understand people enjoy rebuilding them but as the age-old adage goes, once a car is driven off the lot it loses value, and any money put into them thereafter is considered 'general maintenance' that adds nothing to the value. P.T. Barnum said it best.
I completely agree. I’ve been involved in enough of these projects to know that you aren’t going to get all that money back.
i have never understood the mindset of buying a personal car sight unseen,
like i would be willing to wire $10000+ for a car but would not be willing to drive (or even fly) out to see the car first,
its amazing how good an underbody can look in pictures after a coat of spray-paint, also how do you know the engine doesn't have issues if you haven't heard it startup and run?
And yet, it happens every day.
I only search within my travel radius. Like Fox Mulder says, "Trust No One"
I've followed your channel for some time now and I'm always a little smarter after watching
Well, I try. Haha. Thank you.
9:00 Another key detail here is that the ebay listing has a larger resolution picture. Whoever has the smaller resolution picture copied it in some way that compressed the image and reduced the resolution
So if the scam is a few layers deep, the largest resolution is the real/original seller
EDIT: I made the colossal error of not watching the whole video before commenting, and you briefly mentioned it at 10:50. But still you can see the actual resolution numbers earlier
You and many others commented a bit early on this one. Haha. Yes, you’re absolutely right.
Great information for us rookies!!!!!
I should kick my own ass about 20 years ago I sold my 70 charger no motor or trans for 4000 itd be more like 30k now
me too brother
I had a running driving but rough-ish 69 charger I sold in 2002 for $2000. I literally regret it everyday. Was originally green/green 383 2 barrel but was painted white before i bought it.
You are *far* from the only one. There’s just no way of knowing.
Are you sure you'd be able to keep it the same condition for 20 years? It might have turned into dust by now lmao
😊👍👍
There are tons and tons of real ads out there. There are also fake ones… the trick is to figure out how to tell the two apart. Sometimes, it’s tough…
Thanks for the heads up Jaime great information people suck some people anyway lol
Good catch jamie
I saw that charger on the b body forum and it was semi local. I sent it to a few buddies. The older guys on the forum found the car on eBay.
I saw that same $10,000 ad in a Virginia CL a couple of weeks ago. You flag it but they just put it back up in another city.
The morons who take a photo of the vehicle with their hand or even thumb blocking the license plate just kills me. Why? I mean, just...WHY?
SERIOUSLY! It just kills me. Lol.
I'm in grants pass saw this ad last week. I totally thought it was fake too. Lol. I sent it to my dad and said there's no way this car is this cheap hahaha
I almost fell into the trap a few years ago when buying a VW Camper. It was a cheap van on what looked like a dealer page that was near to where I live, but as soon as I started asking about come to see it I got the sorry I'm overseas at the moment but can have it shipped to your house at your cost spiel.
Wow… good times.
What happens when you offer to in cash, in person?
You buy it, or you don’t. I literally told this guy not to send a deposit and that we would send a friend who lives in Salem over to look at it.
Well I saw a '68, light blue, 318 auto, black vinyl top, all stock with some bondo, but not too bad for sale on a front lawn the next neighborhood over for $3,800 obo..........back in New England where I grew up..........in 1987. Wish I knew then what I know now.
Yeeeeep…
So where is the best place to buy a project car?
Facebook Marketplace is where they’re at, but all of the same rules apply.
I fix up old cars as a hobby. I but cars long distance often. I have a trick I use.. it is soooo valuable, I wont even share it... I dont need more competition in this field...
Well, alrighty then! I’m all about the free sharing of information - but that’s all you.
So mad my neighbor wouldn't sell me his 440 1970 Dodge Challenger for $2500 back in 1994. He "didn't want to see it next door, no longer in his possession".
Actually? I wouldn’t want that either.
Thanks for sharing you knowledge. I use Google lens as well.
Like all things too good to be true , (Cars - Guitars) it is too good to be true.
Thanks Jamie.
Funny, the other night I was going thru Marketplace, and a couple really looked a bit fishy!
When I saw your thumbnail, I immediately recognized the car from the eBay listing
Yep. It’s a legit car! And many people have seen that too. This is more of a PSA about scammers getting better at the game than anything else.
My first clue was the architecture of the house, that's definitely east coast.
Yes - and we noticed that too, and some uncovered license plates in two pictures. But I forgot to discuss those details in the video.
Good advice. If ya can't put eyes - yours or a trusted source - on a car. No sendy money... speaking of Chargers... start work on the 69'!
I already did!! 😅
@@DeadDodgeGarage Great news! Keep the content coming. Wagon was a gooder... wondering where you'll go with the rusty musty 69
Nope. You go in person, match the title to the owner's ID, then match the title VIN to the numbers on the car. Only then do you think about handing over money.
Cool! Feel free to ignore all of the stories in the comments from people who bought a car sight unseen and everything worked out fine. Because obviously that never happens.
If I can’t touch it before any money exchanges hands it’s not meant to be.
Thanks for the video about 10 years ago a buddy of mine was all excited he found it absolutely beautiful 57 Corvette rotisserie restoration over 100 pictures is $25,000 the owner said send me $15,000 to hold it I was looking at the pictures and I noticed something very suspicious why is this car parked in front of a building with giant letters written in Russian yes the car was in Russia it was for sale for $80,000 this guy was a scammer he almost pressed the button I said don't do it it's a scam and he listened to me he was lucky if you wouldn't have called me he was going to send this guy 15 grand have a great day
Wow… $15k is an insane down payment. Never send more than you’re willing to lose.
I know a guy who got scammed on hemi crate engine for 20 grand. He sent the money and only received a small cardboard box with a picture of the engine in it.
Jesus… that’s quite something.
Jamie, I looked at that car for the last 2 weeks now, it's on eBay in Pittsburgh I think it is for $32,000 then he lowed it to $30, 875. It's not a bad car I guess, he has a lot of pictures on the eBay listing.
I cover all that in the video 😅
@@DeadDodgeGarage Yep, seen that after I watched the whole thing, I'm a moron. If that car was 10,000 I would have walked from Vegas to buy it. I do like it.
To make that car “nice” which is subjective the only thing that isn’t subjective is you’ll be so upside down on the value of that car it’s scary. Thank god he reached out to you first.
I paid $10k for my rusty POS, and I WILL do it again. If you want one of these cars, you’re going to pay. Better hope you can weld.
@ I don’t want an old dodge. I have a new hellcat Widebody. And a 1968 Camaro RS/SS. I hate dodge and hope they go bankrupt! I do love my hellcat tho.
Reminds me of the story behind the green Trail Duster that Tom bought about a year ago.
Yeah! I forgot all about that. At least that guy actually thought he was going to have a car to sell. He didn’t have it yet… but he might have soon.
And you shouldn’t. It’s an absolutely ridiculous thing to do.
@DeadDodgeGarage it's absolutely not foolproof, I definitely prefer the "have a friend go look at it in person" option
Remember kids, coronets are far superior to chargers.
THE PIZZA PLANET TRUCK IS A TOYOTA JAMIE 😂
If you say so 🤣
It was also listed in Harrisonburg, PA. A friend sent it to me. I told him it was not real…
Apparently it has been listed in many different areas…
I’m convinced I will never in my lifetime own my dream car, 68 Charger😢
Just save save save. You'll get there. Nothing worth doing is easy friend.
I bought my 1971 roadrunner (in college) for 15k in the beginning of this year which took me buying and selling two 2nd gen f body's and 4 years of labor. Anything is possible if you have faith in christ and work for it.
It won’t be easy. You’re not the only one that wants one. But it can be done…
I used to say the same exact thing, until I reached age 45, now I own my own gorgeous 68 Charger. Lesson is, never say never, my friend! Anything is possible!
This scam happens all time with different vehicles.. i rememeber 1 here in the uk with a nice vw t5 camper... i even almost fell for it
Shit.. when I was in high-school my best friend had one... we used to drive around in that thing while we tripped out on mescaline while listening to early van halen. The sound of the secondaries opening up was awesome... I know, irresponsible. But we lived in the middle of nowhere.
This is so funny. I just went on marketplace to look and found that exact car with those exact photos. He's asking 30k 😅
Yes - that is the ACTUAL seller. He has it listed on Marketplace as well as eBay.
Imagine that a charger with cragers. Oh how naive I was when I thought my barracuda on cragers was unique. To be fair it was my 1st car and over 30 years ago. 😂😂
😅
